I couldn't speak English very well when I lived in Cardiff, so Welsh people didn't say "Cheers" to me quite often. I guess they kindly tried to use a simple word, "Thank you." I heard many "Sorry" and "Thank you." in the UK. They helped me a lot. I was so impressed Brits. A lovely country and people.

Yes, I really enjoyed your lessons. They are so useful for learning everyday English. Even here was former British colony, and we went thru years of education that was mainly taught in English, I didn't learn what you taught here. BTW Tom, could u produce a lesson on how British greet each other in formal or informal meetings? Again most grateful for your valuable sharing!

Ha ha - we Brits love to apologise for everything!
@beatricepeter9955 жыл бұрын
Don't worry,Julia, you're not the only one ! I and my son used to apologise over everything we thought it would hurt one another ... Now ,we are living in a different world . People hurt each other ,on a daily basis ,on the bus , everywhere , and have the slightest intention to apologise . Let's stick to what we've got ,shall we !?! Our Sterling English ,and humane approach !

I'm a Japanese person living in America, and I say "sorry" all the time too, and get criticized for it sometimes. Americans take it literally, but a lot of times we just mean to be polite. I'm glad to learn British people are the same way! I should use more "excuse me" in place for "sorry" here in America, come to think of it. Thanks for the LOVELY video!

One of the most amazing video on YT: fun, well-filmed and really instructive! I happened to watch "Love Actually" last week and soon thought it was an ordinary sickly sweet Christmas film. Two days later I checked YT notifications and found out you had filmed a video about it! Now while watching this one I hear you talking about it again... and it's suddenly one of my favourite films of all time! Happy new year teacher! Greetings from an italian follower. It's a pleasure to learn and improve English with you. Thank you x

I reckon the politeness comes from living on a crowded tiny island. Strict social etiquette reduces the potential for the kind of conflict living so close to other humans is. It’s why it’s impolite to invade the bubble surrounding a stranger in London to say “hello” or make much chitchat beyond the weather. Though my only evidence is that Japan seems to have strict social etiquette / politeness
