Content idea: Have you heard of the new T.V. show, "Shogun". It's getting rave reviews and videos on it are getting good views on KZbin. I think people would be interested in watching you do an episode by episode review (there are only going to be 10 episodes) . Since you lived in Japan for a long time and come from a Christian background (correct me if I'm wrong). It will definitely help with the KZbin algorithm.

Even with my limited experience teaching English here in Japan, I resonate with you a lot on how out of touch and irrelevant textbook/curriculums are to actually learning English. In other news, I quit GABA and start some more starting tomorrow. Let's hope it's not a nightmare.

Did you ever have to deal with any child abuse situations? Did you ever get any kind of training about what you're supposed to do in that situation, whether it's the staff at a school abusing a kid, or their parents at home? How is that sort of thing normally handled in Japan? You should do a video about this, if you know enough about it.

Hmmmm yes and no. We have had to contact japans cpa services before due to a students bruising and sometimes weird stuff parents have packed for lunch. Ie hot black coffee in a water bottle and other weird stuff. We are never trained for anything like that and for the most part Japan tends to ignore it unless pressed to the point of embarrassment

Being an ALT in a public school in summer was the absolute worst. In one of my schools nobody was allowed to bring water to class, no students, no teachers. So everyone was just slowing dying in the classroom. No A/C either, just a small desk fan in the corner. Like what? There’s so many minute ridiculous rules that drove me completely bonkers at the schools.

@@unrested They're doing Spartan program in the name of education to build healthy body. However, the reality is that almost of Japanese became so weak-minded loser-like characters who are completely sucked their own lively young spirits.

I remember the attempted stabbing story from the first time you told it and i have been repeating it since then lol its the wildest story ive ever heard from a school. I hope that kid was able to straighten his life out. Its really sad that he got to the point of being arrested at such a young age

Had a guy bring the loudest hair clipper and get a haircut on recess, it was so loud you could hear it two floors downstairs, algebra teacher ( strictest being in existence) shows up to see what's going on and we form a wall around the guy to hide him from sight. Interesting stories. I was under the impression that ALT meant, Assistant Language Teacher. Is that not the case? Funny how they expected extra work outside the contract terms. Not unique to Japan, but still ridiculous. Good on you for standing up to that nonsense. Crazy about the AC "usage". I recall one of my former Chinese employers finding excuses to not turn on the AC in summer. Opening windows wasn't a better option due to the air pollution. Teachers would bring standing fans to the classrooms to at least have some air circulating. You're right about the English "education" there being edutainment more than functional teaching/learning. What's sadder is that they know it doesn't work, but go with the mindset that, "This is how things are done here (Ex. Shogunai)" mentality. Until they allow Native English speakers to at least have equal say, if not, run the show, things won't improve.

My theory is they keep English out of their schools to stop Japan from losing their best tech, science and engineering leads

Wow, that was young for that student to land himself in jail! Wow, do they REALLY expect kids and teachers to be able to perform and survive under such inhumane conditions? Here in Canada, if you can't cool or heat the school properly, they'd close the school for the day or at the least, the afternoon when it's much warmer). Sometimes, in June when it's exam period and the kids are done , the teachers will take them out to play on the lawn with like cheap water sliding mats and stuff...

It was honestly hell to teach in those conditions. I have no excuse for why they do it. I’m sure the education dept does though

as someone who works in a school here in the states I was wondering what (if any) differentness there are in how the kids act towards their peers and teachers? I'm just a 🧹janitor🧹, but it would appear to me that kids can get pretty crazy sometimes, to put it mildly. just curious how Japanese kids handle their adolescence comparatively =)

Yeah most schools I worked at would keep it at 30 or off the whole summer. Some had to have ambulances come for sports day practice cause kids would pass out. The worst was around Covid when they made kids run with masks on while enduring insane heat.

Great video! And don’t take this the wrong way. I almost didn’t even wanna write this. I’ve followed you since more than a decade ago and always look forward to your videos. But the part about the teacher who just dozes 😴off, you did kinda narc on dude. I forgive you! It’s no sweat. If it was me, I wouldn’t have brought attention to the 8th grade. That’s if I wasn’t tryna throw him under the bus. In other words, will what I say bring negative consequences for him. Because based on what I’ve heard, I would have live and let live. He was lazy but seemed cool at the same time. Now if it was someone who is a threat and brings a form of harm, that’s a different can of worms.

I felt like I narced on him after it was reported to me that he had been talked to. My thinking was that the elementary school and jhs never talked as they were in different wards. I was 😑 wrong. lol oops.

Really, US teachers are not allowed to restrain students! So if you saw a kid walking towards another kid with a knife, you just need to stand there and let the back stabbing happen? 🤦‍♂️
