They didn't move back to Canada because they couldn't afford Japan. Simon went to Canada and filed for divorce, leaving Martina behind to sort out their affairs in Japan. She had to move to Canada because they have a clause where you can't get divorced unless you are seperated in the country for a whole year. Martina even mentioned her life in Japan was uprooted due to it. That's why she moved back to Japan once the divorce was over.

Hey just so everyone knows this is completely false! They moved back to Canada due to the money not coming in anymore ( I.e. when they closed their studio and moved was when it started falling apart) Martina is very manipulative and always seeking attention/pity from people. Martina made life impossible for Simon when she became emotionally/verbally abusive. Simon still gets flack and all he did was continue posting on EYK. I agree he should’ve just made a a new channel as well but let’s also not demonize him for posting on a channel nobody is even watching 💀❤🎉

Simon put out a video complaining about their cat, he has never said she was emotionally/verbally abusive. I remember a video by Simon asking for communities of people with chronicly ill partners because he was at the end of his rope. The cult theory fits. He also said in one video he was very depressed before meeting Martina, and making plans to off himself if he didn't find someone and her saving him. Codependency doesn't mix well with illness. However it's also standard statistic - men bail on ill women, or disabled children. Whichever it is I honestly see him as the guy who was in for the good times and had no emotional maturity for the bad times.

There was a lot of discussion on those about him being a covert narcissist though, and how he molded his persona to be like her while they were together, made himself seem like a hero when it came to caring for her and made it seem like she needed him to survive. When they separated he ended up dating someone who was very much into yoga, then became a lot like her(the weird persona change). I don't remember much else though. Martina's new channel seems to have kept the essence of EYK, Simon's new stuff is...strange and not my cup of tea.

Quite a bit of misinformation in this video, don't know whether intentionally or unintentionally. They didn't move from Korea to Japan for whatever reasons you talked about. They disclosed why they made the decision to move to Japan, it was due to the progression of Martina's health condition, which by the way is called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and is a connective tissue disorder, they had discussed it and made the decision to move because living in Japan was a dream of Martina's and she wanted to be able to enjoy going out places and having little adventures with the channel before her mobility decreased more. I can't accurately speculate the reason for why Simon wanted the divorce but from what others say and how he is now portraying himself online, something happened or he I think might've gotten involved with a community or something and they either brainwashed him. A more likely situation unfortunately is that it just happened, Overtime people get tired of being caretakers to those who are chronically ill and sadly the statistics for chronically ill women having male partners who end up deciding to leave later on is quite high. It could be a combination of the two that he was convinced by others to leave And also partially his own feelings made it easy for him to be convinced. Never going to know the actual reasons. Don't need to know the actual reasons. they didn't leave Japan for any reason other than that they had to go back to Canada for their separation because you had to be separated for a certain amount of time before you can get divorced. they didn't leave Japan because they're content wasn't doing as well, just because you were a person who didn't like their new content didn't mean they did not have plenty of people who enjoyed it and didn't mean it wasn't doing well with monetarily. Also, you can't be fired from your own production company so that is false information as well. Simon and Martina had their own company that they created, they produce their own videos with the help of people that they hired. they literally had employees that they hired like assistance and other film related employees. Simon's dog was not named after the first dog, the first dogs name was Spudgy and the second dog's name was fudgy. Absolutely insensitive but was not the exact same name.

I know their relationship ending was confusing to me, but I remember I came across a reddit post during that time. It said that during Covid Simon started doing online yoga classes and fell in love with his yoga instructor or something. That's why he suddenly became all zen and spiritual or whatever. Like he morphs into the persona of the person he's interested in. Well later on I think he even made videos or podcast-style videos with said yoga instructor but it was never confirmed their relationship was anything more than friends. Also, in one of Simon and Martina podcast episodes, Martina said when she met Simon he was extremely misogynistic and Simon even backed up her claims and said he changed a lot over the years. I bring this up, because people have speculated he fell back to his old ways and started consuming red pill content. There was so much tea on reddit but I think the posts have been deleted and at the time I really wasn't interested about it. I followed couple of their reddit pages way before they split, and those pages started posting a lot of speculation. If a person always steal your food or eat it when you are hungry or make a point to annoy you, that says a lot about his character. Great video, Scott! I have a theory on what happened to Simon and the divorce. I followed their channel closely when they moved to Japan, and like everyone else thought they were #goals and was shocked when they announced they were separating and moving back to Canada. And I was even more shocked by Simon’s drastic personality change, and as I watched I realized I had seen this before; when my friend joined an online cult. When Simon said he had gotten deep into yoga, it immediately threw up red flags as there are SO MANY nefarious cults disguised as yoga studios/clubs/gurus these days. My theory is that he joined as part of his fitness workouts (probably online, while still in Japan), but the other people/guru pointed out that he does everything for his wife, his entire life revolved around her and he deserved to do something for himself. Once they figured out Martina was disabled and wouldn’t join their group, maybe she even pushed back on Simon when he wanted to take more yoga courses or something else that cost a lot, they encouraged him to do more “for himself” (the cult) and drop the dead weight (Martina). They tapped into something Simon was already feeling during a time when he was vulnerable (the pandemic). I even left a comment on Martina’s instagram post that simply said “Simon got sucked into a yoga cult” and she deleted it, though she left up a ton of other comments trash talking him. I feel like their marriage could have survived covid, their channel’s downfall, and even moving back home, but Simon’s drastic turn of face drove the final wedge between.

She hasn't shot a video in a couple years I feel like, but her patrons on Patreon continue helping. It's very sad but the way they keep supporting her is amazing. I was told that some people who move to Hawaii (Big Island) are either in a witness protection program, part of a cult or has beliefs that are just so out of the norm. And they move there because it’s remote but still has the comfort of modern living, and nobody bothers them. It’s tropical, people leave you alone, and it feels like you’re at the edge of the world. At one point I think Simon was thinking of moving there, and of course everyone was like stay away from Hawaii.

I still watch Martina’s channel. I still have some of the restaurant addresses she went to on my phone. And I also found those dang street art graffiti stickers CROD!!! All over the place. I'll keep my personal opinions from what the viewers got to see of their divorce to myself. Curious to hear what you're going to say! Miss their channel but King Kogi (Martina's channel) does have a very similar vibe to what EYK was. But yeah, Simon's new content is just...not for me. Not sure who it is for. Very niche and very not what he used to be like. It's jarring to see if you watch him from the past. Martina seems to have stayed similar but she definetely didn't handle things well. Neither did Simon. They both went back and forth in passive-ish ways. Her content is just the most familiar. EYS was definitely more boring. They had lots of things to cover and just didn't.

My feeling was that Simon was very devoted to taking care of Martina. He mentioned once how his biggest fear is not being able to physically take care of her, and that's why he's started exercising. On the other hand, Martina is very prideful. On occasions she would give me the feeling that she's annoyed how Simon would know stuff, and has quick answers. It could be that she felt annoyed how Simon is taking care of her, because it makes her feel weak and incapable. On the other hand, Simon might have felt that she is being ungrateful and not appreciating everything he does for her, and this could've led to a lot of fights which eventually resulted in them getting divorced. Who knows.

I used to be a huge fan of EYK around 10 years ago, to the point i even took part in one of their meetups in Europe. I started to watch less and less when they moved to Japan, but the separation and Simon's transformations were still shocking to me. From what I gather from many subreddits, and from what I remember seeing in older videos, I think Simon was an abuser,(allegedly) a quite well hidden one. I still watch some videos by Martina sometimes and wish her all the best.

Had to finally tap out at 19 minutes. You have GOT to spend a little more time with the material you're reporting on or at least draft up a script so you're not constantly making vague guesses and repeating phrases over and over again. You went on and on about how you didn't know the name of Martina's condition instead of just performing literally seconds of research (Ehlers-Danlos) talked about their dog and whiffed at the name despite it being their mascot (Spudgy; the new dog's name was Fudgy). It's weirdly shallow reporting that makes the rest of your video hard to trust, because the guesses you make about super basic EYK info make it sound like you barely know them at all.

Regarding the dog, the issue there was that Martina did not get over the death of their beloved dog , which also was a big part of their Eat your Kimchi channel and the merch, and Simon got a new dog while she was still grieving . I think this was a bit insensitive from what I remember.. I remember it was mentioned that the couple used to be very competitive with each other, which never ends well tbh...But I had no idea about any of it at a time. I really used to adore the couple, now I understand I used to idolize what they allowed us to see as many others. When they separated I could understand where Martina was coming from. Simon seemed super insensitive to her grieving and such and did whatever he felt like. First sign of someone being selfish when he disregards their partners feelings imho. So if Simon was like that with Martina on a daily I can understand what she was hinting at... Is just imagine if that was happening through most of their marriage together, man, this is what amazes me, we all were in awe of their relationship, no one could ever tell something was off. Amazing acting (?)
@unrested8 ай бұрын
Completely agree with everything you said and yeah that’s what stunned me too. Their relationship looked amazing, like, “wow this couple really compliments each other in every aspect.” When they went offline for a while and then it was heard that they had seperated my initial reaction was complete disbelief. I really only believed it after seeing Simon’s story vid and Martina’s goodbye video.

I liked them and loved their videos and actually still watch their old videos. But ….. there is another side of them I did not like. 1. When they asked their viewers to help them financially to open their own cafe. After they did, they never offered anything back for them. Not a thank you gift or even a free coffee when you visit us!. 2. When KZbin placed stricter rules for monetization, few days later they posted that they need to have channel members because most of their videos got demonetized. But I was watching lots of their videos those days being sick in bed, ALL had multiple ads on them!. Beside, they already have lots of members in their patrion. 3. As I know, they did not discuss their Japan move with the EYK employees like Suzi and the others. They were all surprised by that just a short time before that. And when ppl started asking about them, Simon said that they all didn’t want to move to Japan and they don’t want to be in videos anymore. Even though later, Suzi and another girl started their own channel. And neither they or Simon and Martina ever mentioned each others or visited them.

I think they had been struggling for a long, long time. I remember listening to a podcast episode where they said that they were in marriage counseling and had been for a while. Also on that same podcast episode, Martina teared up because she said that she feared that they one day would end up breaking up. Simon of course reassured her that that would not happen, and they shared a nice comforting moment together. This podcast episode came out a good while before the whole C word happened. Also, their dog’s name was Spudgy, and when Simon got a new dog, he named him Fudgy. Martina was upset that the name was so similar and she said that he copied the name and it was wrong. I’m like it’s his dog and he can do what he wants 🤷♀️ I pretty much always named my cats so that they would end in an”ie” sound because to me it’s the way I express a cute pet name. In my opinion, I tend to side more with Simon. Don’t get me wrong. In divorce (except abuse and things like that) both people have something that they could have improved to make the relationship work better. But if you look at who was name-calling and bashing online, it always started with Martina. And Simon‘s responses were very mild mannered and calm. Martina’s bashing was very vindictive and vengeful. If that’s what she was doing publicly, then I can’t imagine what happened privately. Again, I’m not saying Simon is 100% innocent, but I think how you act publicly after a divorce tells a lot about you. And she had even more responsibility than a regular person because of the extremely large platform that she had. There’s no way she didn’t know that her comments were going to spark, rumors and ill will towards Simon. I’m sure that is what she wanted because she was angry with him. And I honestly don’t think about her claims of abuse. Without a court case and a verdict, there’s no way for us to know what actually happened. Maybe it happened, but maybe it didn’t. There was a guy at my high school, who was three grades below me and was friends with my little brother. His girlfriend was psycho, and we all knew it. She ended up accusing him of rape and trying to stab her with a pocket knife. we all knew she was lying because of her psychotic behavior previously, but she filed charges, and they ended up going to court. Unsurprisingly, she dropped the charges… And there are several public court cases where women have been proven to have lied about serious accusations like rape and abuse. Men have lost their livelihoods over these false accusations. So yeah, I’m not saying Martina is lying, but I’m saying that it is always a possibility because there is no court case or verdict. So we, as the public will never know. As for Simon‘s personality change, I could see how the trauma of a failing relationship and divorce would change a person. I could especially see how it would cause someone to delve into meditation and yoga because not only is it an outlet, but it’s a way to keep your emotions under control and not be in fight or flight. It was definitely jarring seeing him in that manner, but I think it’s apparent that the divorce took its toll on both of them and changed them. I’m sure this would happen to anyone going through a divorce. Honestly, I would rather Simon go this route than becoming an alcoholic, or a drug addict because he can’t get his emotions under control.

Martina always wanted to live in Japan. it was her dream! it wasn't just meeting the production guy in Korea. I watched every single one of their videos until their breakup. I can't watch them anymore (I tried) because I loved them together and it was so sad and frankly bizarre they broke up. then Martina was so ugly to Simon on Instagram and just the anger and resentment was through the roof. she was so kind (or presented as so in all her videos) and Simon literally moved across the country twice for her and takes care of her which I know caused her a ton of guilt that she would talk about. And you said their videos about each other was so much he said she said straight up bickering that was so ugly and so different then how they built each other up all the time. I don't think Simon is a narc. I think she needed a reason to leave and she chose that. Did you see how much weight Simon lost when they broke up? It broke him. Martina hasn't dealt with the trauma yet. I also have a chronic illness and needing help// having your spouse be a caretaker is something I totally relate to--but I don't have EDS, I have a blood clotting disorder and lyme disease. I thought it was so ironic that they used to call their fans nasties, because nasty is exactly what EYK fans turned out to be. When they split, the fandom was vicious. Simon and Martina chose not to discuss their split publicly, and they asked people not to speculate. Instead their fans took sides, screenshot their every comment, fabricated their own stories to explain the split and spread horrible rumours everywhere. And the bullying of Simon was brutal to watch. They arm-chair diagnosed him with a personality disorder, said he joined a cult, had an affair, all kinds of crazy shit, and nobody had any proof of any of it. I was so disgusted. They were so obviously both heartbroken and hurt about how things had turned out. I can't believe people saw that and decided to pile on.
