Idea for the next video: The weirdest students you've had in an Eikaiwa school. At least I can remember some very interesting encounters. From an unemployed Chakra Master who thought he could beat Mike Tyson with his inner energy, to an insanely friendly student who worked as a model and was the biggest Elvis & US fan you could imagine. He wore cowboy boots to every class, a leather jacket with the US flag on the back and rode up every day on a huge bike.

Fortunately, most of the English teachers at our Eikaiwa were really nice people. I only remember one very strange guy who was fired after a few months. He was quite good-looking: tall, blond, well-built. For the students, he was the classic Ikemen teacher. However, the compliments from his students led to him becoming quite a bit overconfident and at some point he started flirting with his female students. It got particularly crazy when he asked his favorite students to sit on his lap. We, the other teachers, didn't notice this, but one day our manager came into the lunchroom and told us that Ikemen-guy was packing up his things after she came into his classroom and saw a female student sitting on his lap while the rest of the class looked to the side, embarrassed. We never saw him again and the atmosphere was very tense over the next few days as the school management feared the school's reputation could be damaged.

I'd say most of the ESL teaching, outside of proper schools, in Japan, is edutainment (Ex. Eikaiwas). I believe Aeon also makes teaching staff live in the apartments they own. That being said, sucks about your experience at Nova. I had a similar school bankruptcy experience with Web International in China. Fortunately, I was able to find a better job afterwards until I left China.

Great video and having nearly 18 years of teaching experience in Japan (though working public and private elementary, junior high, and senior high schools), I can totally relate. I remember the whole Nova thing happened right after I moved back to the states back in January of 2007 (but I would come back to Japan permanently two years later). Also around that time, Lisa Ann Hawker, who was working for Nova, was also tragically killed. Both incidents were in the newspapers in Arizona and my friends and relatives asked me about them. But despite being saved, I’m surprised NOTHING has changed. When I was living in Japan my second time (from 2005-2007), I was working for Heart, based out of Ibaraki since that was what I could get after being rejected by JET. Heart is also shitty in its own ways and surprised it hasn’t gone the way of the dodo yet. As for your “stalker” at NOVA, didn’t NOVA have a policy that you can’t interact with students outside of school? Could you not have addressed the situation that way if that were the case? I’ll admit that I do have some extrovert qualities at times, and I am someone who is driven by curiosity and wanting to be educated. So when I talk to non-Americans at some previous jobs, my line of questioning can come across as “invasive,” but I do my best to respect that individual and let them know where I’m coming from. Of course, I don’t ask anything stereotypical…other than telling Germans that I love David Hasselhoff myself… Usually the Germans my age or older get it, and the younger ones don’t. I remember I had a Jamaican coworker at my last school and she assumed me and this other American coworkers I became great friends with were potheads because of the way we interacted (we got along so well, that our Japanese coworkers somewhat resented it), but when we got to know each other, she was surprised how well I knew about her country all thanks to having a very good friend (he was American, but his parents were from Jamaica) who answered my questions about it. She was shocked to learn that I knew who Marcus Garvey, an activist from Jamaica from 100 years ago was. I’ll admit, I like to surprise people. But yeah, the Eikaiwa and ALT system in Japan is just terrible and is built in a way that isn’t meant to be a long term thing, though it potentially should be. The system consequently brings in under-qualified and entitled assholes and bitches. I loved teaching and did it as long as I could. I’ve had shitty teaching jobs, but I’ve had some great ones as well. I’ve had some good foreign and Japanese coworkers, and some bad apples as well. Hell, I even dated some Japanese coworkers on three occasions and was briefly engaged to one back in 2011. Unfortunately, she was transferred to Australia and I was transferred to Saitama and we mutually agreed to pursue our dreams. It took me four years to get over it because we were so great together and she was a very special woman. Like you, I’ve learned to make do with what I had at times. In some instances, it brought out the worst in me, and in others, it made me a better person. Perhaps everything happens for a reason, but like you, I got no regrets. Regrets prevent you from learning from the experiences, and if you’re in Japan for the long run, you’re going to have PLENTY of learning experiences because there’s no school of hard knocks like the Japanese kind. I never experienced people drinking alcohol in the workplace, but I have heard stories at sister schools where Japanese and foreign teachers showed up hung over and drunk. They were given stern warnings and/or suspended. I stopped drinking alcohol in my late twenties because my best friend’s dad died of an alcohol overdose at the time, and I broke off a friendship shortly prior to that because he was dating this alcoholic bitch who was abusing him, stole money from me, and a bunch of other people. Police didn’t do shit, but I got back at her in my own ways and I heard he broke up with her after she was in a drunk driving accident she caused herself. But yeah, shit like that is why I don’t drink and when people pressure me to drink, I tell them these instances of why and they respect my choices.

Dang you sound like you have the long storied history like myself with the job drama happening around you and not with you. Mind you it’s everywhere. There is no job without drama but just like you I more so stood back and observed rather than initiated any sort of drama. People are so interesting in the ways they find simple social settings at work and out of work and manage to twist them into balls of chaos and self immolation. I may never truly understand why people do the things they do but I’ll never get bored of observing them. As for the no contact out of work you are totally right. After I told our receptionist she was actually able to point to that rule to get the student to lay off. Aside from that yeah…man nova sucked. My manager was the most apathetic and hollow soul of a human I have ever met. I remember people confronting him over non payment and his response being something like “nova wouldn’t intentionally do that, no one should be complaining about computer errors. “ imagine that said in the most monotone robotic voice ever. I remember his “training” was to throw me into my first lesson without saying anything and then telling me my lesson was bad and that I probably wouldn’t make a good teacher. I guess I am still poorly teaching to this day. What a surreal weird experience nova was. I worked the ALT route as well and that was far more endearing. There were some great kids and great schools I worked for that I was honestly almost at tears when having to leave. I’ll never forget suffering through classrooms with no AC only to head back to teachers room where the AC existed but was set to 30 for some reason and just laughing to myself…what’s the point? I’ll still be living in Japan in the summer and I’m so happy I am. Japan has some truly calming, soul searching path ways that force you to develop skills and coping mechanism that no other life event will. And I am thankful for all it has taught me.

@@unrested I’ve had my share of bullshit drama. I was getting the most frivolous complaints at my last job. For example, when making our entrance exam, I had to make a conversation about renting CDs, and wrote down that this person was looking for BTS CDs. I was told I couldn’t do that. I mean, it’s not like I’m asking to name all the members. They also gave me bullshit for writing about Akihabara (in passing) and the topic was tourism in Tokyo. And then my coworker, who was “the darling” of the school, and who I also considered a friend, got all the praise for kind of doing what I did, but on meth about stuff like Halloween in Shibuya. When I brought up that other people were doing stuff I was doing, their response was “they’re not the ones we’re complaining about.” Every time the staff complained, I just tuned myself out. I remember I wanted to pull A Big Lebowski once by replying, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening” just to get them to fire me and pay me my severance. I somewhat legally did everything I could to get myself fired on purpose, mostly doing translating work at my desk. They gave me repeated warnings but they never fired me or anything like that. My foreign coworkers had my back, and I had theirs. But there was so much we could do. The school didn’t know how to run their ship so we all jumped upon the end of our contracts. I wanted to quit so many times, but my wife told me to stick it out until my contract was over. I’ll admit the money was good. Regardless, whenever I had to find a new job, I always managed to get one within less than a month. But my wife didn’t want me to take that risk in let’s say the middle of October. But two months before the end, I did find a good job teaching the history of anime and Pop culture at a small university in Tokyo to students from the US, Canada, Australia, and South Korea while also do translation work. I’m glad I’m somewhere where I am of value and can make good money. So overall, I’m better than ever in this post-pandemic world. And when working with American college students, I’ve been learning to deal with “micro aggressions” with my humor. I’ve only heard about them in concept and seen them in Cobra Kai, but never learned they were a real thing. Thankfully, we managed to solve these issues like adults and they understand that despite being an American, I’ve spent my adult life in Japan being divorced from the present landscape.

Soo many "oofs" in this video 😅. The woman following you home who couldn't take a hint is scary. Doesn't matter if it's a woman or a man, someone following you is terrifying. I've seen enough true crime stuff to know that obsessed women can still be extremely dangerous. To the one about the weed obsessed guy, anything can be addictive and I'm really happy we're finally getting more studies showing this. And yes, being high and doing certain activities can lead to yours or someone else's death. For too long, the narrative has been this idea that weed is just perfectly fine and harmless and that's just not true. It affects each person differently and maybe not as harshly as other drugs, but I think it's very dangerous to paint it in this light of being completely harmless. We even now know that smoking before the age of 25 can stunt brain development. Now that we're over the initial hill about its differences from other drugs, I'm happy we're getting more nuanced information. Sorry, this became a rant, lol. Again, I'm just happy studies are being done that shows the actual middle-ground with weed instead. That's way more helpful to society. To the guy starting fights with everyone at work...sounds like an American (which, I am one) who has never left the country, maybe not even his home state. What the hell does he have against New Zealand? 😅. They seem like sweet people, dude definitely did not handle the culture shock very well and lashed out at everyone else to compensate. To the story of the alcoholic roommate...I truly hope wherever he's at, he's doing better. Happy the roommate took his comment about ending it all seriously and called to get him some help. And lastly (though this didn't touch on every story you spoke of), I'm left saddened that Japanese people would still think they should work a job they're not being paid for. Makes it easy to see how many can be roped into working for "black companies" where overtime isn't paid. Maybe life isn't just about money, but until I'm given free rent or free food, I need money to pay for these things and would want compensation. Yes, there were the students to consider in your case, but it's not selfish to stop working when you're not going to be paid for it. Because putting something like that on a resume just means the next job can exploit you. It's not for me to tell Japan how to run itself, and I know that technically, there are laws against this, but until people actually create a movement and rally for that change, the laws that have been passed will just be ignored. Pretty unfortunate. Sorry for the super long comment, I just found this video to be really interesting, lol. Been watching you since...I don't know, maybe when you had one child? Or your second child was very, very little, lol. I think this comment might make up for all the times I may have not commented 😂. Hope you have a great weekend! Edited as I initially said "it's not selfless to stop working..." and changed it to "selfish", lol.
