As a retired naval architect I want to say that II have wished a hundred times for clients like you. The particular requirements that each client needs are the most important part of boat design and construction. You should get EXACTLY what you want and need. Hopefully your designer will also deliver some ideas that will increase your comfort, reduce costs where possible, and deliver the best looking boat as well. I hope you get the best boat possible Skip

It's because they have done it for so many years. Most clients haven't got the experience to know what they need.

@@mini696 I think it's more a case of realism and research. I've been looking at doing this for a whole two weeks and I'd figured everything except a workshop (mostly because I didn't think you'd have space for it). The hybrid drive, electric kitchen and rainwater collection are no brainers and even the most cursory search of the sailing channels will show you that everyone is either praising or complaining about airflow and forward facing nav stations.

Definitely sounds like the HH44 to me! We went with the Seawind 1370, but if I had another chunk of change and a few more years, it would have been the HH44. I love the lines, the spaces, and the hybrid engine! Seth was great to talk to at HH, and obviously he has done the same kind of live aboard research that you guys have. Good luck - I hope for your sake it is the HH44!

Just a suggestion from someone who has sailed without. I would include FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared RADAR) and SONAR. Both are valuable when approaching inlets for anchoring at night or bad weather, or open ocean passage.

I am now buying my last boat (I am over 70). It will have much of what you want as well. A few comments from my experience: Lithium batteries should be UL 1972 certified. That means Master Volt or Xantrex. Aluminium is renewable. Fiberglass is plastic. Like poor quality lithium batteries, propane is a fire waiting to happen. Leave it out. A forward looing sonar is really assuring. So is a FLIR thermal camera. With it, you can get some sleep during your night watch. Finally, "performance" is really misunderstood. It does NOT mean high end speed. It actually refers to the ability to sail lin really light winds. That requires narrow hulls and, consequently, light weight. But, that also means a reduction in creature comforts. There is a compromise.
@BRADH-xw8sw
@BRADH-xw8sw 2 жыл бұрын
Right on there - forward facing sonar would have saved many a boat in badly charted waters and Caribbean bombies. Think it will also give you warning on any sudden sand bar depth change too… but you should be watching your Nav.

Lithionics batteries are UL certified.
@realpaddy5270
@realpaddy5270 2 жыл бұрын
@@RogerWilco1 Yes, you are right Roger. I did not mention Lithionics but I should mention that Master Volt and Xantrex have extensive world wide support while Lithionics does not. The same goes for diesel/electric hybrid systems. Herley's new system would be well supported in New Zealand (where Herley is located) but not widely throughout the world. This is also an issue for me because my new (2nd hand) boat has diesel engines using proprietary parts that are well supported in Europe but not elsewhere
@AORD72
@AORD72 2 жыл бұрын
Forward sonar needs to look along way ahead, I suspect at 5 knots you won't have enough time for a lot of systems. I see there is one 100 meter system. I read about an Outremer hitting a reef in Tahiti, which because of the solid glass bottom was able to slide back off. On a performance cat I see the dagger boards as another part of safety to prevent grounding.

I really really hope that you two get one of the Silent Yachts that you kept on showing. That is my dream boat and it would be awesome to see it through your eyes. But they're on the bigger side and you kept mentioning sails still so I feel like Antares has a very logical and thoughtful setup on their Antares 44. 1. Straight shaft drive 2. Reliable, redundant parallel hybrid system (hybrid marine system) 3. Lots of solar 4. Safety mindset 5. No Genset needed 6. Less moving parts, less ICE engines, no sail drive oil changes or sail drive issues in general, more reliability due to parallel system, easier maintenance on engines due to being midship. 7. Thoughtful, safe cockpit design.

This look like the perfects requirements for modern long term cruisers. You can also swap it out for the dinghy outboard in a pinch. You guys are going to be the best marketing possible for the maker of your next boat.

Thanks guys for coming out and telling me about your choices for the new boat. I get sick and tired of the BS other channels use ie clickbait to end the video so you have to come back to find out more and obviously create more clicks and revenue etc. It is refreshing to have the project explained so that we can either imagine or see in black and white you upcoming mud map. I think that creates more genuine interest rather than, "oh well we have run out of time to, tell you more, or start the engine..." Or whatever the catch to get you to come back Having watched you since your RV days travelling with your cats (how are they BTW?) to getting here and now I'm looking forward to this next phase of your journey. The Wynns are my favorite sailing channel and top 5 of all channels. Anyway, I also watch Sailing Uma and they seem to be pioneers in the world of ReGen sailing. They are hard-core sailors, pushing their self-refurbished mono-hull to it's limits, while focusing on sustainability. They have tackled much of the southern hemisphere, up the Atlantic and a year in the far North including, the Arctic. It is very interesting watching different styles of sailing. I am so excited for the new boat and the opportunities it will provide. Hopefully, it won't take a year for production, like I have seen recently. --Jessica from Florida 🌞

Dual electrical systems. That is independent of each other, one system each hull to provide redundancy. Have a 4-5kW inverter each side, if one side breaks down you can still operate fridge, steering, radio etc. LFP batteries for high cycle life. 3kW of solar. For comfort big windows in top cabin, you should be able to see the water whilst seated inside. Shallow draft for anchorage (like 500mm). Performance sailing to sail in light winds, far more comfortable than motoring. Dagger boards for pointing ability plus safety, better to hit bottom with a sacrificial dagger first.

From watching all of these sailing shows, I had a similar list. Sailing Uma has Electric engine with Regen. They bought a backup generator (Diesel) to run in low sun areas to power the electric motor. They are also starting a campaign or business to redesign and create your unique living/workspace rather than buy the stock boat layouts which can be antiquated. Home comforts, Uma added a wood stove in their boat for cold areas. Are you getting a desalinator (water maker for safety purposes? SV Delos: How about an electric combo washer/dryer and that satellite wifi dome. Can you totally enclose the cockpit area and adjust your sails from there or even drive the boat in the dining area? can you add an indoor garden to grow things. Lots to dream about, can't wait to see your new baby!🎉

Closest I have seen to your dream boat is the Maine Cat 38 (electric version). Think UMA has shown that electric propulsion with good regen can work well. Other utubers have demonstrated (you included) that electric galleys work. Interested to see what you have found. One question, why hybrid? Personally I would rather have the propulsion/regen system as one system. And have a generator as a separate system with only electrical connections to the engines (being able to bypass the batteries if necessary).

That's pretty much my list too, except for one more: ease of access to all systems. I don't know why boat manufacturers assume people working on boats will be 4' tall contortionists.

Max Cruise Marine 44. Ticks all thier boxes. Electric engines, over 2k of solar, dagger boards and thin bow entry, electric galley, large battery bank and it is way cheaper than the HH44. MJ Sailing is building the Max Cruise 42 as a you build kit, but you can order the 44 from the factory. We almost ordered one but decided on the Leopard 42.

The upcoming Windelo 47' seems like it ticks almost all the boxes previously mentioned except having a known rain capture system (which might be available - since specifications haven't yet come out on it). The rain capture part is the biggest mystery, since most manufacturers do not have this onboard - Xquisite being the only other one I can think of as having it standard (and they only build 50' + yachts). Seems like, since the hurricanes hit the Caribbean and destroyed so many yachts/catamarans, most manufactures have really doubled down on charter yacht design, with feature sets not friendly to long term cruisers/couples - even companies like Leopard. It's a shame that most folks only have the option of retrofitting these boats to make them work rather than having a brand or two focused on this market segment.

Now the question becomes ... did they like my comment because I guessed correctly, or because they just wanted to torture me/redirect the group ... (I assume the later - lol). Actually, I think I guessed the Windelo in a comment on the last video where you first mentioned selling the boat. In any case - I can't wait to see you on your next adventure/boat! I have to live vicariously through someone, after all!

Your size limit (under 50 feet) knocked out the top two that I was thinking of, either a Sunreef ECO-50 or a Silent-Yachts 60 (since they've stopped building the 55). I definitely agree with some others about how reassuring it would be to have a FLIR and forward looking sonar in addition to the more normal suite of electronics. For some reason, I'm thinking you may be joining the crew of Ruby Rose in Ho Chi Minh City for a Seawind 1370 although they don't list hybrid propulsion on their website as an option.
@AORD72

I suspect the 1370 will be too heavy and no dagger boards, guessing it won't be very fast.
@michiganengineer8621
@michiganengineer8621 2 жыл бұрын
@@AORD72 The 1370 has a lot of carbon fiber in the build. Not as much as some of the higher end boats of course, but enough to get the above waterline weight down somewhat. I've been following Ruby Rose and they're currently documenting the build of their own after renting a 1260 for quite some time while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands.

I like your top ten check boxes. We redid our boat this year and removed the diesel and put in electric motors from Electric Yacht. 30 kW of 48 volt battery to run the motors and the 110V plus 5 kw of 12 volt to run the house. We went 52 days of sailing in Panama without needing to run the generator. It can be done. You will need a good generator once in a while and when you need it you will be glad you have it. I especially liked what you said that the panels should be built in as part of the design and not an after thought. With planning the boat can still be a beautiful boat without looking like a space station. It’s great that you are encouraging this discussion so the boat manufacturers will hopefully take notice. Thanks

Well, if that's true, that is an expensive 44 footer. Looks to start at 1.2 million, so i'm sure it will be every bit of 1.5+ delivered. That's an awful lot to spend on an experiment. For that kind for money, and the complexity of the systems involved, I think I'd let a few of the kinks get worked out first.

Good luck, I suggest doing extensive research into longevity of any given electric motor/motor saildrive you select and know exactly what the safety cutouts are and how to quickly bypass them, as ive seen three cats now have their electrical drive systems cut out and incur so much damage that they all needed to be hauled. Where to fit the rigid solar to recharge that lithium bank will be interesting.
