We have been eating more formally for quite some time and recently I got sick. The table and house became so disheveled. I tried sitting down at a cluttered table and found that I was too distracted by the stuff on the table I couldn't enjoy my food. While that particular instance couldn't be helped I realized how important dining etiquette had become in our family. Thank you for these videos and your books. Jennifer, Amen. I had a friend that would want to talk about drama, her problems, complain, serious negativity while we where eating and my acid reflux would act up so bad that I could not keep a bite down. I knew my body was telling me "Do you want to have this insane conversation or nourish your soul and body?" I am now committed to eating in a peaceful lovely environment and savoring a beautiful meal. Thank you for all that you do. ❤️

You are so right about having tidy surroundings when eating. We've just moved to a new house and every day my husband puts boxes all over our table. At first I moved them, but it has become a daily thing and I don't have the energy with all the hours I work. I told him I'd be glad to meet him back at our beautiful table once he stops using it as a catch all. I think we deserve a clean, uncluttered table at which to eat, but he'll have to give me a little help. We are eating on the deck now.

I cant help feeling I must add a point to your tip about not eating when you're upset. Sometimes, we go through very stressful, sad situations that last weeks or months. In those times, you may have no choice about eating when upset, or you will lose too much weight and definitely compromise your hormone balance and immunity. I would suggest having things like smoothies, soups, mashed potatoes and slow roasted stews, foods that are easily digested and high in nutrition. Continued prayer for your dear dad, Jennifer.🙏♥️🇨🇦

I’ve really come to appreciate the tablecloth-placemat combo with young kids: the placemat keeps the tablecloth cleaner for longer ;-) In my culture and faith tradition (Judaism), setting a ‘sacred table’ is really valued (especially on Shabbat). Sure, esthetics are part of it but more importantly, we ‘set’ the table with blessings, song, stories, Torah study, lots of questions and even more humor. Whatever happens throughout the day, my family gathers at the table for all meals and it is such a supportive anchor in our family life.

Yes, I was going to add for myself, that the practice of the family saying grace before the meal is helpfully reorienting. Being thankful to God for His blessings, for nourishment and for time with loved ones, helps everyone to leave their day behind and focus on enjoying food and family.

I love your refined and enriching videos. Eating should always be a relaxing occasion. Nothing worse either to have guests and let disputes arise, either with a couple having marriage issues, or people embarking on heated political disputes. We're adamant : we stop it right away by saying "We shall change unpleasant subjects", since the rare times we dared not, , it ruined all the party. Two couples who used to invite us were regularly having arguments over sometimes minor things such as "where on earth did you put that bread basket ? I can't find it, typical of your messy habits"... ,that is SO embarrassing for us guests. We simply turned down any further invitations, and when they asked why we weren't available any more, had the honesty to tell them why, i.e. that a luncheon, however casual, or a dinner or tea party or whatever invitation should be an enjoyable experience and that if they had issues they should settle them beforehand .
@219720121455252 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that honesty but also home it was said gracefully. For example: we don’t want to be the source of needless disputes between you

Great video. I have a very small kitchen so one of the things I do is clean up as much of the prep mess as possible while food is baking, sauteing or simmering. Then after dinner there is less to clean, no great mountain of dishes towering over me to ruin my meal while I'm eating. I'm also anal about keeping the dinning table clear of clutter throughout the day so it doesn't have to be cleaned off before a meal, or worse, discourage anyone from eating there and instead eating in front of the TV.

One tip for sitting down in a clutter free environment is advice from my high school home economics teacher: clean as you go. Have a pan or sink of hot soapy water drawn as soon as you begin preparing your meal - any meal. As you dirty items, whether it be pots or utensils or whatever - drop them immediately into the soapy water. When your meal prep is at a point that you can walk away for a bit, maybe the soup is simmering in the back burner or the roast is in the oven, quickly wash, rinse and put away all those items you used during meal prep. Next, when the food is done cooking, transfer to a serving dish and then soak or wash that cooking pot. Then, when you sit down to eat, you have a clean kitchen! I've followed this advice for 30 years and can truly say it makes meal prep and meal time so much more pleasant.

I am so happy to hear the good news about your father! Unfortunately my lunches are eaten in my office while watching KZbin! However, I always use lovely plates, cups and cutlery and have a tablecloth on the table. I cringe when I watch movies or videos of people eating standing up in the kitchen or leaning on benches. Breakfast in my house is the most joyous occassion, with both my husband and I eating together with soft jazz playing in the background and no rushing around (after having years of hectic mornings getting kids off to school). I value this part of the day and thinking sitting down together, having a serene environment, using beautiful plates/cups and leaving the table at the same time are high priorities! Not a cellphone or TV in sight! We are lucky we are at a life stage where we can make this possible. Have a lovely week! Thanks for your videos, as they are a reminder of how things can be if you make the effort!

Hi Jennifer, wow this dress on you emphasizes the green colors in your eyes so beautifully! 🤩 Can you show us how to treat your table clothes? I'd like to get a few but I'm afraid they will end up full of stains and we don't even have children. 😅
