Brag and Bob, for footdrop exercises you need to use a model (patient) who has a footdrop to perform the exercise. You are a normal person so it is easy for you to move your foot to show. In a hospital they use electricity to strap the patient's footdrop, so when the electricity power is switched on the footdrop could lift up and down like a normal foot. But as the power is switched off after 15 minutes the footdrop drops down and back to square one.

Man foot drop fricking sucks. I’m 15 and I was diagnosed with it, plus I play the drums and skateboard so I *need* to use my left foot and have proper movement. Thing is the doctors weren’t even completely sure how I did it. I noticed myself that I got it after I started crossing my legs for long periods of time during the break. Recently I’ve got a little more movement in it though so hopefully it’ll get better soon...

I was heavily exposed to pesticide fumes and the first sign was a focal seizure in my right foot. I woke up and my foot was slamming down over and over on the heel. I was still mentally there so I tried to stop it by putting weight on my foot, sat on it on my bed but it didn’t stop. And then I passed out and woke up hours later and my foot wasn’t as active but my mind was slipping away. Lived alone but I called my mom and she saw that I was in trouble. She called the PD where I lived and they came with the EMTs and banged on the door. I had passed out while on the phone with my mother and was on the floor. I was able to pull myself to the door and unlock it. And then I had a grand mal seizure right when the EMTs entered. They saved my life, my mother saved my life. After long recovery, they were able to get me out of the hospital bed, into a wheelchair, then to a walker, then to a cane and now I can walk on my own but with still slight to moderate foot drop. I was only 32 when this happened but thanks to Physical Therapists, I can function. And I can actually lift my foot/toes on random moments. Slightly but still can so the nerves are still functional. But, I’d pay every penny I had, have and will have to give me my foot control back. To play with my nephews, to dance, to make sure I do not lose my balance and fall and hit my head and die. Thank you for the video and all your works.

I've been shot by an ak47 and bullet went through and out to the left of my back right next to the spine I'm not paralyzed I have a very little movement in my left leg and full movement in my right left by my feet and toes are weak and even if I take my hand and bend my toes upward it just won't bend I use all my muscle it just won't bend I can vary spread my toes and sometimes I get a really bad pain that comes and goes it prevents me from sleeping I can't walk. My life has totally changed since may 30 when the accident happend . back in the hospital I told the doctors and nnurses about the pain and they would bring a pill that gave no relief for the pain I felt no effect and it makes me angry because like what can they do to just stop this pain and give me control of my feet again I use to be able to run roll jump I was in good shape for a Lil skinny guy now I feel like lifes passing me by

Hi Bob and Brad I came across your videos after looking at foot braces for foot drop. I have cerebal palsy, but after having surgery at the age of 8yrs. old I was able to walk. I started physical therapy after and had custom made braces for both feet. During a move they were lost and my mother couldnt afford to get another pair. Our church helped raise the money for them. I have drop foot and tend to drag my feet when walking. I have eversion and im knocked knee. Is there anything thing that could help me correct this and give me a better posture as well as gait? I have a lot of lower back pain and limited balance due to the way I walk.

William Cerda I had complications from surgery which led to a small stroke. I was in hospital for a total of 5 months 3 in ICU 1 in ward then 1 in rehab learning to walk again.Being totally immobile for around 4 in total. My drop foot is a constant thing for me especially when I am tired. Gym and physio sessions are still are must to keep everything working otherwise the muscles go back to being lazy again.

@harryduck1962
@harryduck1962 4 жыл бұрын
William Cerda It does have its days I just have to be mindful to lift my foot properly. I still do my exercises everyday to keep my foot working properly. The strengthen your ankle and stretch your achilles try going up and down on your tippy toes - like your reaching for something high up on a shelf and you can just reach it. I do these when I'm waiting for the kettle to boil or the microwave to finish. Hold onto something while your doing it if your balance is not real good like the back of a chair or kitchen bench. Hold for a few seconds when your on the tippy toes then come back down slowly. I aim for about 10 at a time and hold for about 5 seconds each go. If you can only do a couple for a few seconds at a time thats good too. It's better to do 3 good ones than 5 mediocre ones. When I first started I think I could barely do 3 before that was enough. Try doing these a couple of times a day. The key to recovering and improvement is doing the exercises on a regular basis. It is so so important.

I was told some permanent nerve damage from a botched surgery wouldn't allow much recovery from foot drop. Absolutely no dorsal flex, nor can I "hold" position like you showed. Muscle atrophy is happening amazingly fast, in just four months. I have a Flex-MT plus, but am not sure of where to place the electrodes or how strong to set it. Lots of numb places to avoid. Are the exercises even going to benefit a person like me? Feeling hopeless. Living abroad in a 3rd world country.

Jayne Dough I am in the same type of situation. I was never told stretching and strengthing the muscles would help foot drop. I am going to start doing these exercises. I am hopeful that I will see improvement. Because I have been dealing with this drop foot for eight years and I am tired of having to wear a brace all the time. I will be praying that your situation improves too! God Bless You!

My name is Linda. I had a stroke Christmas of 2016. I realized that something was wrong. For 5 months my left foot toes were cold all the time. No matter what I did they stayed cold. Three days before l had the stroke l had a stiff neck could not get comfortable. The day of the stroke I walked into my house and fell, family member helped me up, l slide back on the floor. They called EMT. Once I got to the hospital I was given an exray of my head and was told I had bleeding going on, so I was put into ICU for a few weeks. Finally the bleeding stop after getting to the hospital where the doctors did there thing. Thank God l am still here. But I was looking through the computer and found these guys who talked about the stroke and showed some exercises l can do. I can walk but because I don’t get to get around a lot, l get very very stiff. So hopefully it will help me. Thank you guys.

Um, really guys? You're not even the best PTs on this page. The rambling speech is distracting. The camera is frequently not ideally focused on what the viewer needs most to see. But far worse, at least twice you say "ankle" when you mean "foot!" Pretty important difference! I can't imagine how you got all those thumbs ups!

Just recovering after a herniated disk (l5-S1) where a big piece of material (1 inch by half an inch) was removed from the "spine" where it had compressed the nerves for some time and finally caused the right leg to fail - no ability to lift my own weight on to the toes and my glutus maximus is almost gone. Pain was gone after the surgery but the leg is still not working and the nerves to the glute and part of the calf and foot is not firing. Any good exercises to use to get those nerves working again? My first fysio recommended walking as much as possible (without pain) but I compensate like crazy and my heal on the right foot is hurting even after short walks. - And thanks so much for the videos!!!

In my case, my footdrop on my right leg I got it following a Lumber L4-L5 surgery some 40 years ago and according to the surgeon, it might take 3 weeks or 3 months to be back to normal or it might never happened; the percentage was 5% of patients who got foot drop might not heal. In my case I did belong to the 5%. During the 40 years, I did every exercise I know including aquatic therapy in the swimming pool as well as acupuncture and massage. As an active sportsman, I am now 84 years old (born 02-01-1937) and am still trying ever possible exercise hoping to heal the footdrop but without success. I just lay off gym workout 4-5 days a week following the Covid-19 Pandemic when all the gyns and swimming pools close since February 2020. So now my training is now done at home and watching real patients having foot drop doing their exercises under the watchful eyes of their Physiotherapists in hospital and not demonstration done by Physio which is not realistic. Period!

I have been installing laminate flooring in my room for about 2 days. I worked about 8 hours per day and I was kneeling, crouching and sitting crossed legs a lot (I suppose that I have injured nerves in my knee). When I was done with work I have noticed that I can't lift my right foot anymore. But, at first sight, I was thinking that maybe somehow I have streched or injured a muscle in right leg. Therefore, I waited for 6-7 days before I visited my family doctor (that was a mistake). Two days before I visited my family doctor, I have been reading a lot about the foot drop on the internet. That's why I knew I had a symptoms of foot drop. My family doctor confirmed that I have foot drop and with an emergency procedure she sent me next day (20.11.2018.) to a physiatrist. Diagnosis was laesio nervi peronei and because of that I wasn’t able to lift my right foot. Physiatrist gave me a prescription for the Neurobion (combination of vitamins B1, B6, B12 and other ingredients) and also they have showed me how to perform exercises (you can find similar exercises on yt) at home. I have been taking Neurobion and performing exercises 2 times per day. Today (28.11.2018.) I can lift my right foot normally, I can drive a car and walk properly. But, I don't have yet full strength in my right foot like I had before the injury. Also, 3.12.2018. I need to go on physical therapy (abbreviation is AFT - I don't know what that abbreviation stands for). Physical therapy will last for 10 days, and after that (20.12.2018.) I need to visit that physiatrist again (just because of examination). Btw I am from Croatia, probably in other countries they have a different medicines and procedures. If your injury is similar like mine, don't be afraid. Be persistent with exercises and take your medicine regularly and you will be ok again. Good luck!

God bless you guys. I’ve had mild CP for 50 years. I can walk 5 miles and spend hours in the gym, but no one has ever explained to me what foot drop was, that the anterior muscle was affected, this is why my shoes wear out, and this is how you exercise it. The way people treat disabled children is almost criminal, as they are seen as objects to put braces on and do surgery on. Not everyone teaches them to own their body and to be proud of it and try to improve it, like a little gymnast or ice skater would be taught. The person with the disability needs excellent, positive, fun, athletic training so much more...

I am completely weak and I have no strength to do it on my own. Any encouragements. I suffer from a foot drop as well. I developed a lump between my arch and heel. These types of migraines mimic a stroke, it's causes constriction of the blood vessels in my brain. Again which leads to weakness. Short term memory loss. I fall often. I need help.

at 5:53 "get the foot independent as soon as you can", what does that mean? is there a time limit post stroke to which a person has any chance to regain any strength that they used to have? can you essentially be 'too late' and miss your chance of regaining any of that mobility you once had? Any feedback would be really appreciated, thank you for your time and the very educational video.

Thank you so very much for the very well demonstrate exercises for foot drop! My life partner had his stroke in March 2014 and thankfully learned to walk again with the aid of a walking stick and a full lower leg splint (afo I think it's called), because of foot drop. About a year following his stroke (2015) the then physio did some tests and we were told that there were no flickers at all and as such there was no hope for him to be able to walk in shoes without the splint ever again. This was devastating news - especially for my partner of course. Now to my question: do you two think that these exercises can still be beneficial almost 3.5 years following my partner's stroke? I don't want to mention these exercises to him unless you two think that after all this time - following a training schedule - he may still be able to walk without a full lower leg splint in the future? Thanks heaps in advance for your reply

I had a stroke 4/10/17, wearing an AFO brace on my left leg, when I was in therapy (no longer am as insurance benefits have run out), but I was told by PT that leg was firing, currently, I am waiting for my ankle to wake up. Can only walk some with a quad cane. Left hip flexor hasn't awakened either. Do you have any exercises I can do for the ankle, hip flexor and to strenghten the whole leg? A video would be great!!! Thank you!!!!

Thank you guys so much. I've learned a lot of exercise to treat my drop foot. I've had a drop foot since 7-26-16, after having total hip replacement surgery. I now have peroneal neuropathy. I'm not a diabetic, this injury was total caused from the surgery. I've had an EMG, and MRI. I'm hoping possibly with physical therapy, and other treatment by drop foot will heal. Yes, I do wear an AFO brace. THANKS AGAIN!!!

I have a bit of foot drop from a bad ankle injury from about 5 years ago. No broken bones but quite a bit of muscle damage. I really need to do some physical therapy for it. I realized about a year ago that I couldn't tap my left foot. I really need to do stretching and strengthening for it. I know a quite a bit (I just need to actually do it) this video had some stuff I hadn't thought of though, thank you.
