"Moreno had failed to qualify for 12 out of 14 races" - given how shit the EuroBrun was, I think it's more accurate to say that he succeeded in qualifying for 2 out of 14 races. Really, it was impressive what he was able to do with such woeful machinery. He himself lists qualifying for the Monaco GP with Andrea Moda as his greatest achievement in F1.
@F1Krazy4 жыл бұрын
On the subject of Moreno, actually, he switched teams twice in 1991. After Benetton ditched him for Schumacher he took Schumi's seat at Jordan for a couple of races, then drove for Minardi at the final race in Adelaide.

Mario Andretti - 1976 - Parnelli to Lotus: heard from a journalist while on the grid at Long Beach that Parnelli was pulling out of F1, and quit the team (including the Indycar team) that same evening. The day after, he spotted a glum Colin Chapman at the hotel breakfast. Chapman had just lost Ronnie Peterson to March, and was looking for a top driver. A deal was set up there and then, and Andretti would bring Lotus back to glory before the end of the year, winning at Fuji. Speaking of Lotus in 1976: Ronnie Peterson switched to March because he and his management claimed that Lotus had breached their contract by fielding defective cars for the Brazilian GP. Especially faulty brakes were mentioned in the settlement. Peterson would win at Monza later that year in the March, well before Lotus would win again.

If you listen to his long form interview on the official F1 channel, he was getting episodes of sepsis from the infected fractures and was still pulling debris out the wounds for years afterwards. As an Orthopaedic Surgeon I’m amazed he was able to continue his career at all given the severity of his injuries that day.

JJ Lehto, 1994, Benetton to Sauber. 1994 was supposed to be Lehto's big break, joining the rising Benetton team alongside Michael Schumacher. But it wasn't to be. While Schumacher claimed race wins frequently in the early part of 1994, Lehto spent the first 2 races on the sidelines after suffering fractured vertibrae in his neck in a preseason testing accident at Silverstone. It could be argued that he never really recovered. His return was the infamous San Marino Grand Prix. His engine stalled at the start, and got hit by the unsighted Lotus of Pedro Lamy. Next time out at Monaco, he was out of the points and nearly 2 laps down on Schumacher by the end of the race. He retired from Spain as a result of an engine failure. He gained a point in Canada as a result of Christian Fittipaldi being excluded for being underweight. He was once again replaced by Jos Verstappen from the French Grand Prix onwards, before filling in for Schumacher in Italy and Portugal as the two race ban on the lead Benetton driver for his antics at Silverstone was upheld. Poor performance in both races, qualifying P20 at Monza and P14 at Estoril, finishing P9 in Italy and crashing out in Portugal, left him being dropped by Benetton after Portugal. For Japan and Australia that year, he replaced Andrea de Cesaris at Sauber, retiring from Japan and finishing his final race in F1 P10 at Adelaide. He never raced in F1 again

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but JJ should not have returned to racing so soon. Then again, without his F1 career ending, he most likely would not have won the 1995 Le Mans 24 hours.

@Kallen kannu from what I've heard, JJ's preseason testing accident was an attempt for him to match the times Schumacher was setting, but (at least apparently, I don't know for sure) pushed too hard. It's a shame that injury cost him time in the car I feel. I'm not sure he would have matched Schumacher, but if he'd been fully fit he could have been closer than he was. Spain was a glimpse of what he was capable of, qualifying 4th and running well inside the points until he retired with an engine failure

There was a lot more to the Jordan firing Frentzen story than his performance being down. Frentzen had actually offered to pay to have the car improved as he felt development of the car was not right, and Eddie took extreme exception to that feeling that Frentzen had overstepped his place within the team. It was also admitted by Eddie many years later, that it was also in part due to him wanting to appease Honda and free up space for Sato to join the team the next season. Frentzen also swapped teams in 2002, after Arrows went tits up and he replaced Massa in the Sauber for the US GP.

Three changes (Ickx, Peterson and Andretti) that had huge championship implications are missing. In 1973, Ferrari was shit. They didn't even present cars for the German and Dutch GPs. Jacky Ickx was a Nurburgring specialist, so he signed a one race deal with McLaren and finished 3rd. Returned to Ferrari for Monza, car was still shit so Jacky quit for good; little did he know that Fiat had decided to put their foot down, so the car took a big improvement for 74, and Ickx's replacement Lauda won the WDC in 75. Ickx went to Lotus, where Ronnie Peterson was losing his patience. Chapman kept promising his next car will be the one, yet they kept failing. After a disastrous first race in 1976, Ronnie had seen enough and quit for March. At the same time, the American Parnelli team lost their sponsor and withdrew, so lead driver Mario Andretti, out of a ride, took the vacant seat with Lotus. As luck would have it, Chapman was about to finally get it right; poor Peterson returned in 1978, but his earlier "disloyalty" meant he had to sign a #2 driver contract. Mario went on to win the WDC while Ronnie was killed in an accident at Monza (driving the previous year car...)
