10 FT Jon Boat with Mud Motor | How fast will it go?

Excellent point on the 301cc motor. We have used it with good success. I alway say the best mod for a 212cc is a 301cc. It's has double the torque of the 212cc at 17lbs ish heavier. Torque is everything for the loads on these longtails without gearing and the torque on the 301cc is approaching 420cc but it only has 8hp. It also meet lakes and boats with 10hp requirements. That GX270 clone does serious work and it also accepts 420cc intakes and exhausts as well. Its an over looked option that's really good. But most us want more power!!! so we go 420cc and 440cc on the single cylinders. RPM is what gets speed and outboards do that by gearing and stock the honda clones are at 3800k ish. That stock 8hp 301cc will smoke a stage one 11hp 212cc everytime no replacement for displacement in our experience.

Water volume is what gives you speed. A giant prop can turn slowly like when powered by a diesel and push way more water per second . Huge ships have slow moving props incomparison to outboards .

@@tomjones7853 I tried explaining this to some kids on a airboat video, little props on high turning turbo import 4 cylinders isn't going to do as much as a slow turning V8 with twice the size prop and a more aggressive prop blade angle (bite) they couldn't get it🤷 . It's much easier to change a prop than try and put a transmission in a boat lol

Yeah seems like boats need higher rpm and torque for thrust. Seems like a 301 is a good middle between a 420 and a 212. Decent RPM but more torque

I have got to remeber that chainsaw come back, had me rolling. Btw, I have a built 212 on a custom "sorta" longtail on a 1636 Jon boat and when packed down with 2 adults and myself (i.e. way overloaded), I can get it up to around 9mph (per gps) and alone I run around 17 to 18.

The chain saw comment is one of my classics... feel free to use it anytime! I ran a 212 on my old 16 footer and I could get about 15 by myself, but when you put another person in there it was the same way, 8 maybe 9 mph.

one reason you could not be getting the speeds i easily get on my 12 foot with a 212 is because they engine is not adjusted properly on its mount and you have the prop to deep in the water. its good to get up and going from a stop but once you plane out you want the prop to be mostly i the water with about a 1/4 of it sticking out even half sticking out so it can rev higher but making sure its still deep enough to propel. you will feel it when it comes to high out the water it will rev high to easily. remember you are the trim and for full performance you need to work it and play with it even change prop sizes.

Bass pro sells those 10 foot John boats pretty cheap so with a 420 ....I like saying that number.,predator and some float pods I bet it would be a solid 15mph boat that would get you in some cool fishing holes in shallow water

those speeds are a little odd. from my experience my bone stock predator 212 mud motor kit is set up on a tracker 1436 and i am topping out at 15-16mph with just me and loaded with 2 adults and a 10 year old child plus gear we were able to hit 10mph no problem. so my only conclusion is maybe since both boat, mine and yours are both 36 inch wide, just maybe its very similar surface area making both boat comparable in speed per load out. really liked the video.

The more boats I test I am seeing that length has very little effect on speed, it seems to be more about width, weight, and weight placement. Getting the weight balanced just right seems to make the biggest difference.

Length has realy no effect on speed or acceleration, except for the fact a longer boat weighs more. Now width,draw,and power are what controlls speed.

Question for you! I have a 1032 that I want to put a mud motor on. I am not looking for speed, I just need to be able to ease up and down a river about 5 miles each direction with two guys in it. No boat ramp, so I have to drag it up and down a hill and carry the motor. What motor/prop kit setup would you recommend to reliably push 500 lbs in 1032 up a flowing river (moderate flow, nothing crazy) ? Just subscribed, thanks!

I am still not sure yet. We had a lot of problems with the engine and I never got it past half throttle and I was in the mid 20's. I have no doubt it can do 30.

That will all depend on prop size and pitch. Once you get a specific propeller to spin at its max effective speed before cavitating thats it. It doesnt matter how much more motor you give it. Logicaly the more torque and power just gives you the ability to spin a bigger prop moving more volume of water

Dam i have a 420cc surface drive with stage 1 mods and i only get 16 mph on a 14 footer. But it may be slower but mine is way easier to operate and better to maneuver through tight stuff and just as good in the mud so i can’t complain
