My favorite lore has to be the NieR Series, it's such a mind blowing feeling when you realize everything what's happening in the game and what happened to that world before you take part in it But it's even more mind blowing when you realize how philosophical and deep that lore actually is. Most games lore are just that, a story to tell, and even if it is insanely big like Elder Scrolls, it doesn't have a message or a real reason to be that big. That's the difference with NieR

To each their own, but a world is where different stories happen but none is the story of the world, is my best approach to lore, so philosophical meanings and moral of the story/ies ain't my thing. And that is why I love the elder scrolls because it's universe isn't centered around someone or something or some concept, it's just a separate world, like ours but different. And even the lore in the books in the game are just attempts of people in that universe to understand the world around them, like people thought of flat earth in the real world so does the people of the TES universe think about the structure of Nirn,Oblivion and Aetherius.

Search and Destroy was a PS2 game. You play as a tank, just a tank, where you fight in a rebellious unit and free 3 islands from the bad empire before defeating that island. Before each island there is background info on that island... if you "talk" to islanders after liberation they give you lore into the before, during, and hopes for the future. During the last island to free there is a point you must choose 1 of 3 options and each has a different outcome that effects your final boss fight.

Nier: Automata story is amazing and it's delivered in a completely different way than Dark Souls or Mass Effect: the story is not plain written in a wiki or documents, it's told as you play and you'll have to makr some deductions (nothing too complicated, don't worry). Also the story telling has great plot-twists and revelations. It was the game that susprised me the most. I was expecting hack-n-slash anime gameplay but got a week of jaw-dropping nihilism. Well - It might be not the type of game that is usually presented her, but there is a whole game series that does not only an incredible job with building a entire world, but also all the people within it. Not only the playable characters in the game have an complete (often multilayered) backstory, but also almost all NPC's that are in the game also have a story (and backstory) that progresses not only throughout one game, but several games in a row. Those games have sometimes seemly insignificant things that turn out to be huge things in later games. During the games you learn about an civilization from the past that was more advanced than the present, but was destructed for some reason and plunged the whole continent into the dark ages. During the games you slowly discover what really happened and what it means for the future. These games are full of plot twists, and slowly but surely things are going out of control, until a complete continent is plunged into a massive destructive threat. It is a game series that started back in 2014 (for the English translated version) and has it's climax in 2021. The whole series consists of 9 games (so far) and is still not finished (although it is for a part of the continent). I am talking about the JRPG series "The Legend of Heroes". It started way back with "Trails in The Sky" and was followed by "Trails in The Sky SC", Trails in The Sky the 3th", Trails From Zero", "Trails to Azure" and "Trails Of Cold Steel" I, II, II and IV (if you do not want to play the whole series, these last four games can be a good starting point). All these games are no short by any means and are very fun to play. The amount of text and thus story in them is mind boggling, and the way the games are connected and intertwined with each other is fantastic. I started playing these series years ago, and I will keep playing every single game in this series whenever it will be released. I think these series simply belong in this list. Sure - It's not a single game, but it's the only complete game series that tell a story and build a world that grow bigger and bigger each game. There are no other games I know about that do this kind of thing.

People are get easily engrossed in “what ifs” and “wouldn’t it be awesome if” ideas. The Destiny series and the mass effect series lore is very complex and multi layered. They are great stories told over multiple years and are not given the love they deserve. Both games set up the end of the series at the beginning with out giving it away and builds on its self to a big ending you won't see coming. Two of the best game series ever made, each answer presents a new question, with great stories and lores tied in to game play. True you can play them without ever knowing the lores or stories but you most likely won't know what's going on in the games truely or why things happen the way they did.
