Horizon: Zero Dawn has some crazy lore. It was obvious going into the game that our present-day civilization fell, but I don't think anyone expected just how monumentally cataclysmic the event was that caused it. Reading all the ancient data points about these events unfolding, it was chilling.

The Legend of Heroes series also deserves a mention. In a textual form there's so much lines of dialog and lore. The series spans the Trails in the Sky, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, Trails of Cold Steel 1-4, Trails into Reverie and the soon to be 'Kuro no Kiseki' duology.

Someone else understands. I'm sorry but dark souls and elder scrolls haven't come close to the quality of lore in legend of heroes. The ways it's weaved in things as unimportant as Antoines journey to things as importantly as the still unknown objectives of the grandmaster to random NPCs showing up games later giving you tales of the heroes from the previous games. Not just honorable mention but #1 spot for sure

And sometimes after you've played through and you are doing so again it's like, I totally didn't catch that the first time. NPC conversations and the news can be like that too though if I have to hear "disgraced Commander Shepard" one more time... lol

I guess that WH / Wh40K count as TTGs. Their videogame tie-ins don't contribute much to lore, they merely expand upon the existing lore. It's a similar situation as -Superman 64_ -- it didn't add to the Superman lore, which was already written down in comic books and some movies. Video games muat be the (or "a" at least) primary medium to qualify for this list.

My favorite lore has to be the NieR Series, it's such a mind blowing feeling when you realize everything what's happening in the game and what happened to that world before you take part in it But it's even more mind blowing when you realize how philosophical and deep that lore actually is. Most games lore are just that, a story to tell, and even if it is insanely big like Elder Scrolls, it doesn't have a message or a real reason to be that big. That's the difference with NieR

To each their own, but a world is where different stories happen but none is the story of the world, is my best approach to lore, so philosophical meanings and moral of the story/ies ain't my thing. And that is why I love the elder scrolls because it's universe isn't centered around someone or something or some concept, it's just a separate world, like ours but different. And even the lore in the books in the game are just attempts of people in that universe to understand the world around them, like people thought of flat earth in the real world so does the people of the TES universe think about the structure of Nirn,Oblivion and Aetherius.

The longest video about KH is over 4h long. All 11 videos add to a total of 1 day, 5 hours, 45 minutes and 23 seconds, which is absolutely insane. Warhammer has the biggest and craziest lore hands down. Ever since I was introduced to it from total war, I came to find out there's hundreds of books by dozens of authors. There's so many books that there's no official chronological order to them, except for the end times. And supposedly you don't miss anything by reading them out if order. That's how expansive the lore is. There's also warhammer 40k, which is even bigger, but it's space based while fantasy is more like lord of the rings, which I prefer.

The Destiny series and the mass effect series lore is very complex and multi layered. They are great stories told over multiple years and are not given the love they deserve. Both games set up the end of the series at the beginning with out giving it away and builds on its self to a big ending you won't see coming. Two of the best game series ever made, each answer presents a new question, with great stories and lores tied in to game play. True you can play them without ever knowing the lores or stories but you most likely won't know what's going on in the games truely or why things happen the way they did.

@@d00mnoodle24 2016 'codex' has a lot of lore (demon entries, map terminals, etc.). And quite a chunk of Hell lore is covered in the Slayer Testaments. They aren't just random mystic demon speak, as a great deal of it is covered again in Eternal's lore texts in less cryptic fashion. But yes, Eternal takes it to a whole new level, going even further back in time than the Bible in telling the story of the universe. All factions - Hell, Heaven, Sentinels - get their extensive backstories. And naturally there are hints where the story could go next. In addition there's DOOM 3, naturally, that had tons of lore as well. The originals had less, but it is fun to see them slot in perfectly, creating a proper character arc for the Slayer.

@@PenguinDT i read through the codex which gave lore on things like guns, the facility and (my favorite) the demons. But those did not feel like an overarching narrative and more like background information for small things. The testament did give some general history but i didn't think i heard them all. It was something about a stronger bigger demon that was the last change to stop the doomslayer but even that failed so they imprisoned him or something. Maybe i should check it out again as i didn't think the game would be big on lore. Also i hope this doesn't sound like I'm bashing the game. I loved it for it's fast paced brutal combat so didn't pay (enough) attention to the rest
@PenguinDT
@PenguinDT Жыл бұрын
@@d00mnoodle24 No worries! One of the most important bits of the Testaments lore is tale of the Betrayer - a Sentinel whose son is captured by Hell. This makes him betray his brothers in arms, leading to the destruction of the Sentinels and the capture of the Slayer. Not only is this expanded heavily in Eternal, the Betrayer and the fate of his son are a key parts of the story (in the game I mean, not just lore). That's probably my only complaint about 'DOOM lore' - the importance of the Betrayer and his son could be lost to anyone who doesn't go through the lore of at least one of the two games.

Well - It might be not the type of game that is usually presented her, but there is a whole game series that does not only an incredible job with building a entire world, but also all the people within it. Not only the playable characters in the game have an complete (often multilayered) backstory, but also almost all NPC's that are in the game also have a story (and backstory) that progresses not only throughout one game, but several games in a row. Those games have sometimes seemly insignificant things that turn out to be huge things in later games. During the games you learn about an civilization from the past that was more advanced than the present, but was destructed for some reason and plunged the whole continent into the dark ages. During the games you slowly discover what really happened and what it means for the future. These games are full of plot twists, and slowly but surely things are going out of control, until a complete continent is plunged into a massive destructive threat. It is a game series that started back in 2014 (for the English translated version) and has it's climax in 2021. The whole series consists of 9 games (so far) and is still not finished (although it is for a part of the continent). I am talking about the JRPG series "The Legend of Heroes". It started way back with "Trails in The Sky" and was followed by "Trails in The Sky SC", Trails in The Sky the 3th", Trails From Zero", "Trails to Azure" and "Trails Of Cold Steel" I, II, II and IV (if you do not want to play the whole series, these last four games can be a good starting point). All these games are no short by any means and are very fun to play. The amount of text and thus story in them is mind boggling, and the way the games are connected and intertwined with each other is fantastic. I started playing these series years ago, and I will keep playing every single game in this series whenever it will be released. I think these series simply belong in this list. Sure - It's not a single game, but it's the only complete game series that tell a story and build a world that grow bigger and bigger each game. There are no other games I know about that do this kind of thing.

And then there's one of my favorites - the disappearance of the Dwarven race.
