The only fight on this list that I knew would be good or at least a lot better than people thought it was going to be was Usman vs Covington. I knew they were gonna stand and bang because 1.) They hate each other. 2.) They’re wrestlers and typically when you put wrestlers up against each other, their wrestling cancels out or they don’t even shoot for a TD cause there’s no point. Then it becomes a striking battle. 3.) They wanted to overshadow the Masvidal vs Diaz fight and be more exciting (they succeeded) since both of them been talking shit about Masvidal and Diaz being journeymen. 4.) They wanted to prove a point and try to KO each other.

The fact Kevin Lee fought so many times with staph infection and was still competitive speaks volumes about how physically gifted he is. I know some people who have gotten staph infection from training or during BJJ practice and they said it was so ridiculously draining that they didn't want to do anything, like the fact he did his weight cutting on top of having staph at least 3 times that we know of is incredible. Also, athletic commissions are dumb as hell because staph infections are VERY EASILY SPREAD!!!

Not only was Lawler/McDonald II the greatest title fight of all time, but 189 in general was the single greatest main card of all time. It was really a magical show, 5 matches, 5 finishes (2 by flying knee), the Rory/Robby war, and the beautiful live band entrances for the main event. Usman/Covington was wild. Most fights between very high level wrestlers end up being tepid, crappy kickboxing fights because both guys are terrified of committing to something and having their opponent turn it around on them (I think the Phil Davis vs. Ryan Bader snoozefests embody this best, but it's pretty common in every division where this happens). I did think both Usman and Covington might be ballsy enough to actually try to wrestle, but I definitely DID NOT expect a kickboxing fight between the two to be such a barnburner. Whatever you think of them, gotta respect what they put into that fight.

I didn't expect the fight to suck because I already expected a grappling heavy match. In that sense, Usman vs Covington was a pleasant exception. Two wrestlers putting a slugfest and having the fight of the night.
