when i'm at work i dont like getting attractions. i just got the job done, and i make sure my manger wont call me about problems at work when i got home. and because of that i got promoted as a team leader. my main problem is im bad at communication, im not use into talking or commanding or leading anyone but a part of me accepted this challenge. after a few months i am still struggling. so i decided to find videos about leadership and i find this. then i got this idea about praising my team for their improvements last week through group chat. in the morning i was so anxious that they will laugh of what i have said or it might not be a good idea. when the first person i praise approach me he was all smile and it's like he was in a good mood to work, then following person arrived with the same energy and it's like they are trying to impress me. that day it was fun and smooth. it build my confidence and also my team. thanks for this tips. it help a lot

It's great to hear that this approach has worked well for you and that you understand the importance of helping staff understand vital behaviors to success and ensuring that everyone feels valued. These are all key components of effective leadership. I agree that reinforcing positive behaviors through praise is an important strategy for promoting teamwork, collaboration, and engagement. By recognizing and rewarding the efforts and achievements of our team members, we can create a positive and supportive work environment that fosters excellence and encourages continued growth and development. I am glad to hear that you found the video helpful and that you are committed to building a strong and effective leadership style. Thank you for your kind words and for the opportunity to share my insights on leadership. I hope that my guidance can continue to be of value to you as you continue to grow and develop as a leader. -Adrian

It is interesting how so many qualities of leadership run into conflict with need. Many managers get so focused on trying to "motivate" their staff they end up missing what would have them demoralized in the first place. A poor environment, personal stress, a lack of direction. A manager can take huge steps to being more "motivational" just by being more empathetic.

Real story quick, Myself and one of my colleague interviewed a person through video call. I asked a similar behaviour question, How did you tackle a particular situation and how did you respond to a client appreciation... And immediately his tone of voice changed and the pace of interview was lost. Suddenly he seemed lost on the first question... Then we also let it go and carried on. Once the call was over, we replayed the recording. We watched it many times and understood that someone was helping him from behind the screen. Carefully looking, his eyes were looking a little bit away from camera or the screen. So the concept of the question you have mentioned here was the lifesaver. But we didn’t watch this video back then and now only got the behavioural science behind it. Such behaviour questions are really useful in current times where people are always meeting online. Thanks for the explanation and best wishes.

I recently read Angela Duckworth’s book Grit and she mentions, based on Carol Dweck’s research on a growth mindset, that we should praise effort as opposed to talent. Instead of calling someone smart or intelligent we should focus more on what they do to increase their intelligence. Also in Daniel Goleman’s book Focus he states that people who have a proclivity towards daydreaming may benefit from a wandering mind or less focused mind to help access their creativity or creative thoughts or thought process. Just thought I would share what I have recently discovered in my research and I am looking to you for most of my people skill guidance for I am a current awkward person. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with those of us still trying to find our way out of the darkness.

I get your point regarding smiling at alphas. But disagree largely. I smile because am happy. I find it attracts good people to do what I need them to. I have several men that work with me, I am not their supervisor and rank as equal, in the company. However I am the most experienced in my field and command a great deal of respect among them, my supervisors and the rest of management in that company. They all ask me what, when and how. And my smile never dips, never has and probably never will. That said, I appreciate this video, and your presentation is top notch! Thanks!

== Video Summary == 1. Go for the small yes. Asking for a small request first, leads to a "yes" on a bigger request later. 2. Embrace the Pygmalion Effect. Don't offer a bonus, instead offer praise. When people receive a positive label, they "live" up to that label. 3. Logic or Emotion? Logic (proof, statistics, reason), Intuition (what makes sense in the gut), Emotional (metaphors, imagery, story). People prefer intuition and emotional vs logic, but make sure to have a blend. 4. Choose the right seat at the table. Pick a seat where you can see everybody else (ie. the header of the table) 5. Empty Calorie Time. Don't waste energy on "junk" activities. Take a REAL break (not TV, or Facebook) - prefer alternatives like yoga, meditation, etc. 6. Ask behavioral questions. Similar to an interview, you want to reveal their personality, motivations, and values. Example: "What's something that you use to believe that you no longer believe?" 7. Be scared, a little. Those who set high goals are more satisfied than their counterparts that have lower expectation. 8. Abandon revenge. Globalizing vs Localizing (how important is this, really?). Write it down. 9. Embody the body language of leaders. Leaders smile and move less. Go in for a strong handshake first, and also finish with one. 10. Invest in social skills. Basically, watch this video and ones like it!!!

I agree that leadership is a very important skill. One thing that is a turnoff to.me is what I would call corporate sneakiness. That's what I hear when an interviewer is told to ask special, canned questions that supposedly reveal an applicant's psychology or personality. Why not try this: have an honest, open, sincere (unconniving) conversation with a prospective employee, and taking a look at their job history and application? Why do executive staff think they need to 'uncover' the true motivations of someone? In short: enuff with corporate BS. As to zero calorie time, you left out why many useless meetings happen: corporate structure, policies, expected behavior dictate that a meeting must happen. If you don't do it you are in serious trouble. Whether anyone got any benefit from attending the meeting becomes irrelevant. Yes, I do know corporate.

I agree for the most part except for the part about smiling. As a manager, I think it’s very crucial to convey to your staff that you’re fully there to support and guide them. I may be wrong but it seems as if you’re suggesting to smile less often? Trust me, when you have a team of burnt out and overworked ppl due to corporate higher ups not authorizing to hire more staff (because they are greedy and trying to pinch pennies ), you smiling less comes off as cold, closed off, and discourages transparency. Your staff will not come to you with any concerns or ideas for improvement as they will get the vibe that you’re not approachable. I am not saying you need to “fake smile” every second, but smiling does foster trust and openness which is what you as a manager want if you are to keep your team cohesive and motivated.
