It's also implied that Angela doesn't see the abstract daddy monster as the same form James does. She just sees her father. Most of the characters see the environment and monsters in different forms. Eddie is confused when James asks about pyramid head because Eddie doesn't see it. He's not scared of any other monsters either, because he doesn't see them. What he *does* see are the people he feels tormented him. He's in Silent Hill to be given a chance to face his anger at them and self loathing, and he ends up losing his mind and killing them. As far as he sees the town, it's hinted that he doesn't see it as dilapidated and rotting. Just a normal town. For example, where exactly did he get that pizza? Laura is the only innocent and void of trauma person in town, so she simply sees it as it really is, and without any kind of monsters. As for James, he's just come back from murdering his wife, whom it's implied he was sexually aggressive and neglectful of as a heavy drinker and womanizer. The monsters he sees, of course, are all manifestations of his own feelings of guilt for the nature of his own being. He felt restrained by Mary being sick - the straight jacket monster. He was a womanizer - the leg monsters. He felt disgusted by Mary when she was sick - the flesh lips monsters. He lusted after the nurses in the hospital where Mary was - the nurse monsters. He feels remorse for killing (or essentially executing) Mary - Pyramid Head. His whole psyche is falling apart from the guilt he feels for what he's done now Mary is dead - and so the town appears that way to him, too. So what about Maria? She's his sexual desire for Mary. The way he wanted her to be. Then why does James see the abstract daddy monster if that monster is there to torment Angela, even if he sees it in a different form? Because A: He's near to her, and B: He knows what her father did to her, and he knows he's guilty of similar things. He doesn't see monsters when he's near Eddie or Laura, because they don't see any themselves. It's only when he's separated from them that he starts to see the monsters again. You then have an added layer in that it's questionable whether the other people James meets are even there at all. None of them seem to respond to how weird their surroundings are. Surely any normal person would? The only one who does is Angela, but even then, she doesn't comment on it much aside from the scene with the flaming stairs. Perhaps she *does* see the environment as James does, perhaps she sees it differently, and James only sees the flames that she sees when she finally shows the anger that she feels at the world. Note that she never mentions WHAT she sees, all she says is "You see it too? For me, it's always like this". She never says *what* she sees, and she walks off right through the fire unscathed while James is unable to pass them. But why? Because he can't follow her where she's going. Literally and figuratively. She leaves to face her position as a victim, which James is not. His inability to pass the flames is his acceptance that he can't help her, and she doesn't want to be helped. Circling back to the idea that the people James meets aren't really there, then why does he see them and interact with them? Well, you could square that circle with the idea that they are *somewhere*, just not where James is, or at least where he *thinks* he is. Beyond a certain key sequence, space and time pretty much lose meaning to James and become entirely warped. We can't really trust James' perception of what is happening or where he is after that point. He certainly visits the key places we see. The apartment building, the hospital, the lake, the hotel. But what about the prison? Did he really just wander into a prison with massive holes in the floor that lead to a nowhere world? Unlikely. So what's happening there? Well, we don't know, but he certainly visits a place where Angela is; in a small room with a TV and a monster that looks like a bed with two people on it. A motel room. But why would he end up there via a nowhere world? Because he's lost control over where he wants to go and what he wants to see and believe. Because he was being guided there, to witness what was happening to Angela and witness the cruelty of what he did to Mary. That shared experience from opposite sides is what made whatever powers make Silent Hill what it is make him go there at that moment to walk in on Angela being attacked by her father again. Only for him to save her and find out she didn't want to be saved. It happened because he needed to see the consequences of his actions. So what about Eddie and Laura? Well, I honestly don't know. We know he knew about Laura, because Mary mentioned her in her letters to him. As for Eddie, I can't answer that one. Phew. That turned into an essay. Hope I didn't bore you if you read it. I just really love thinking about that game and the story.

My opinion is that If we truly respect and adore that game's most iconic monster so much, we should call him by his actual, more menacing name: The Red Pyramid. "Pyramid Head" sounds like some insult that others shouted at him on the playground when he went to Monster Elementary School. I never played or saw enough of Silent Hill 2 to be sure about your theory one way or the other, but something about it seems off. Getting people to face the ugly sides of their past and inner selves *so they can properly address and overcome them?* The demonic forces that have such sway over that town would never have such a noble motive. I think they just enjoy fabricating hellscapes and hideous creatures by using ugly/damaged psyches... and then watching what happens when someone whose mind and life they're based on interacts with them. It must be amusing theater to them. Or maybe psychic energy is released when those encounters happen which strengthens their influence over the town.

I always see similar lists and am surprised to never see Legion from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Its a big floating ball of painfully screaming bodies, which it rains on you. Destroying its armour of tortured souls reveals a betentacled Lovecraftian horror.

You can also literally use your words against The Master, showing it that the FEV renders the super mutants completely sterile, and therefore impossible to be any kind of "master race" as they are incapable of reproducing. The Master realizes that it became so obsessed with its mission, it completely ignored the gaping hole in it and it kills itself without a struggle.

Richard 'The Master' Moreau had a body of goop, but was still male... not an 'it.' I remember and admire that gameplay aspect about the classic Fallout games: to achieve nearly every objective, there was a means that relied on force, one using stealth or thievery, and one using smarts or eloquence. I nicknamed those pre-generated character archetypes 'The Clocker', 'The Stalker', and 'The Talker' respectively. Of particular moment was when you invite the disbelieving Master to check whether FEV-2 still renders people sterile by asking a female supermutant if she's having her periods. He arrogantly assures you he'll do so via the Unity link, but then mutters aloud in horror at her answer: "What?..... are you _sure?_" At that point he realizes the work he's done such horrible things to achieve won't benefit humanity in the slightest. There's a palpable note of shame in his voice as says everything after that. Of course, another moment I love is less dramatic and cerebral. When you ask Harold about his journeys he says it seems like he couldn't fart without it hitting a supermutant... but that he had the most encounters while traveling to the northwest. When he says that your character can choose to deadpan: "So, you farted northwest?" (I'm pretty sure 'Talker' Albert Cole was the original Vault Dweller. The later games keep referring to The Vault Dweller as a male and the other male pre-gen, 'Clocker' Max Stone, just doesn't fit. Vault Dweller's journal passage in the Fallout 2 manual sounds like someone with solid education wrote it, and the dude managed to shepherd and provide for a large pack of clueless vault inhabitants as they worked their way north from mid-California to Washington on foot. Then he helped them set up an easily defensible, well-functioning farming village too! Does any of that sound like something the dimwitted Stone was capable of doing?)

I'll be honest, William Birkin may look terrifying and has done some bad stuff too, but he's somehow less disgusting than Brian Irons. He was about to do really bad things to Sherry and it took the zombie mutant to save her, that's how shitty Brian was. And he successfully killed a lot of Raccoon City too, not caring whether or not they were zombies. Most disgustingly, he killed the Mayor's daughter and was about to make her into a mannequin. Even the parasite that killed him was more likable than him.

Gygas from Mother 2 would be a great addition. The creator got the idea from a bizarre scene in a movie involving a woman giving birth. Gygas also looks like an unborn and decayed child in a bloodied and messed vagina.

It appears that Capcom made William Birkin even more grotesque in the Resident Evil remakes, especially in the RE Engine. To conclude this comment, the Cerberus we see in Dante's Inferno isn't the same mutt a recognizable Dante fought twice in the Devil May Cry series from DMC3 and DMC5 to be exact, so the other Cerberus should be sent back to the pound that is the Underworld, pun intended.

My suggestion is for the Slayer from the The Suffering. Aside from the spider crawl it would do, the design was super unsettling. I believe there were two variations: one with blades for arms and one with syringes for arms. Nightmare fuel.

Dead Space (take your pick) has to be a good shout. Obviously you've already got Bloodborne, but there are definitely others from Souls worth an honourable mention - Curse-Rotted Greatwood and its exploding pustules, or just everything about the Gaping Dragon.

Instead of William Birking (than match more for a boss instead a character, but well) i put "RE4 Regenerator/Iron Maiden". His breathing, his own music when appears, the chance to bite even when lose his legs, etc...was one of the most scariest part of a RE game than i play.

I remember two bosses that still give me the willies coming from the same game, Castlevania Symphony's Beelzabub and the Granfaloon. Then a third from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence as an optional boss in the form of the This on is both grotesque and it's unrelentingly powerful attacks will make you panic the whole fight. XD I mean.. it's first phase alone is attacking it's exposed beating heart which leaks boiling hot blood that will damage you if you get hit by it.

No Malboro? Its whole point is to be disgusting and it's a pretty iconic baddie. Although I guess it might not qualify as a character per se. I suspect you've never played Boogerman, a game in which you fart on and flick boogers. Decent 2D platformer, actually. Birkin was a totally unremarkable and generic RE monster until the true ending, which was pretty much the only scary thing in the entire game; and yeah, it was pretty horrendous. In terms of pure disgust, I think the G virus sewer baddies were nastier, even if they were pretty much irrelevant to gameplay besides kinda blocking your path.
