How many 80s artists are you aware of? We were some of the first to accept artist of every kind and celebrated artists in makeup and all kinds of looks. Many very successful artists looked and were, gay. Boy George just for starters, and he was hugely successful. We loved him. Adam Ant certainly had the look, though I have no idea if he was straight or gay. We didn’t care. I get that it’s a thing these days to act like any of us that came before were uptight haters, but it just isn’t so. 80s videos were full of men in make up and interesting styles. We had the whole range from hard rock to Boy George and everything in between. This video you mentioned is tame compared to many. I’m 99% sure you weren’t around in the 80s and have no idea what you are talking about.

They probably were also on the more rock stations, but they weren’t marketed as a type. my point was there was no “rampant homophobia” that caused videos to fail. Any kind of music could be a main stream hit. My graduating class alone was over 1000. We had guys dress up for spirit day with makeup etc… at their choosing… who were not gay. It just wasn’t judged. I had 2 friends that were gay, though it was their private business and we didn’t care one way or the other. Were there a few jerks in the world somewhere? I’m sure there always are, but in general.. no. Nothing “rampant”about it and never anyone even making comments about anything of the kind. Which was the comment I was addressing. We lived and loved the music which in the 80s was the most varied range of music types all playing on the same hit channels, that had ever been! Music came out and we listened. It wasn’t really pushed or marketed as a type, it was either a hit or not, based on how catchy it was in general. Billy Idol WAS a hard rocking type. Wearing makeup and bleaching his hair (not super common before this time) but we loved him too. It wasn’t like people who loved the rock stuff didn’t also love the other sounds AND videos. As I said, they were all hits on MTV. I’m very tired of people who weren’t there, acting like they know, because a younger generation started saying it was so. It wasn’t. We were the most open and accepting of the artists just being whatever they were. If the music was good we listened. Why was his video not a massive hit? I couldn’t say. It was on the boring side to me, but I certainly didn’t dislike it.

Katy Perry failed mainly because she went psycho after the 2016 election, cut her hair with that Eminem looking doo and got super weird. That turned a lot of fans off. Granted, pop music was shifting in an different direction by then and the “Pop girl” thing (Britney, Kesha, Gaga, etc) was kinda losing its spark in the mainstream, BUT I personally feel had she not went off the deep end after the election, she could have maybe stuck around for another year or two with a few occasional hit songs. I feel like, other than Billy Squire, none of these are really videos that destroyed artists careers. Most of these were artists who were already fading away or never had a career to begin with. You could include Mr. Roboto by Styx (who had fairly consistent success at that point), We Built This City by Starship (where the song was a huge hit, but the video killed all momentum for the band), Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band (who again, still consistent with success, but basically stopped after the video came out), Sailing by Christopher Cross (establishing self as a serious artist, but his image just killed his career), or American Life by Madonna (was still arguably the biggest name in pop music for 20 years, but completely killed that for her by wussing out on putting a serious anti-war music video like she originally wanted). Those were legit career enders.

I loved Hello Kitty, the song and the video, the whole thing reminded me of Harajuku in Japan. I lived in Japan for 4 years and I remember how popular the culture she showed in the video was amoung young people there. I never understood how it could be called racist, when there wasn't any criticism coming directly from Japan.
