They are not cheaper. The first year of owning mine, I spent a solid $10,000 just to maintain it. I'm hoping I don't run into more problems. I highly doubt anything close to that resembles the cheaper maintence costs of the newer, smaller, IS 300.

The luxurious equivalent in Japan; their top-of-the-line car, is the Century; those things are amazing! The Celsior is just a slightly less well equipped LS400. Here in the UK, LS400's are starting to hit big money; upwards of £10,000 for a nice one. They can still be bought for under £2,000 though. Fuel costs make the LS cars a bit of a challenge as a daily driver. I currently run a 2006 model GS300, and it's a brilliant car in every way; and more economical than the LS cars. I get 40+ mpg on the open road at around 75 to 85 mph, and around 27 - 31 mpg in town. Last Saturday, I needed to overtake a line of 5 cars on an iut of town road; pulled 145mph with plenty left. I also have a 1998 LS400 which I'm "working" on. It now has deep red buttoned leather inside and is being prepared for paint at the moment. It will get 8 coats of a very deep black and 10 coats of laquer to finish. I deliberately haven't lowered it; simply because I can't improve on the Lexus ride, so why try. I've had a "trick" exhaust system built which can be switched from silent to straight through with the flip of a switch. No dark windows, but I've installed an electric rear blind an electric rear side blinds. Chrome Lexus wheels with white-wall tyres and that's it. I'll be publishing pictures later when the car's finished. I liked your review very much, honest and straightforward.
