40k is hobby first and narrative second. The vast universe of Warhammer 40k was created with gaming in mind. It is huge and diverse with a very zoomed out perspective. It deals with factions and subfactions and immense power struggles that fel at the same time specific but also hard to grasp. The tagline "There is only war" is genius. The battles you play out are often wild and ridiculous, but in the context they seem reasonable. Now, I know that the novels, especially those about the Horus Heresy, have a huge following, but would guess most of the readers also have a history with the game. If you just want to pick up a good read there are frankly much better books out there. It is hard to sympathize with a bunch of zealously conservative fascist übermensch. Star Wars is the exact opposite. It is narrative first . Gaming is more of an afterthought. The scope of the movies is so personal and intimate. Compared to 40k Star Wars feels grounded and reasonable. It's part of the appeal, the down to earth believability of it all. But this also makes it harder to translate into a war-game. With Star Wars it has always been about the individual characters. We really care about wether they live or not. It feels wrong to have Luke Skywalker die on the tabletop in your FLG. Having him reduced to a little piece of expendable plastic just won't do. On the other hand he HAS to be in the game. It isn't Star Wars without the heroes. Honestly though, for me it's all about the miniatures. GW:s designs and sculpts are so far ahead of any other game manufacturer that if you are interested in painting and building there is no real alternative. SW Legion's minions are ok at best. Painting them just doesn't seem fun to me.

There are for sure better books out there in general, but quality and stories of many 40k (and Horus Heresy including) books are far superior to any Start Wars book which I read, of course for my taste. But also that often not the same genre Narrative may be second, but not to the gaming component, but to world building and aesthetics/design. Also now there are many people who have never played, but love art, miniatures, art and books

@@gi1dor Fair point. But when I talk about SW I refer to the movies and series of course. I know very little about the books, although I do remember liking the Heir to the Empire-series. That type of licenced genre litterature is tough to do right. Much like licensed games for that matter.

Incredibly well thought out post thank you. I agree on every point. The thing that got me into wargaming was walking into a hobby shop and seeing star wars which I have always loved. The think that got me into 40k was thinking that the models looked so much better. Though, I will say there are a lot of talented modelers out there specializing in star wars stuff. I started with Star wars legion and I play Empire and Droids and I love the game....that being said I bought Octarius killteam set and I now am also a 40k ork player and am having a dakka good time. Me and my young daughter play legion and both games have great qualities.

Ive played 40k for a long time. The activations alone in legion make it so much more engaging then waiting an hour and taking a turn while your opponent waits and hour back and forth

Games Workshop also sell a game that is broken and needs constant fixing and rules errata as soon as it's on the shelf and we all myself included say that's okay 🤔 if it was a faulty appliance we would take it back🤔

I've moved mainly 40k/30k to legion. It's so much more fun. The biggest and most engaging difference is the alternative activations.

Both different games in different settings dont get why ones better than the other. Ive never played SW legion but i was tempted by it, but i only have time for obe game in the hobby and ive been playing 40k on qnd off since 2nd edition

Well, I made two videos one where I say legion is better and one where I say 40k is better. The truth is, the title gets clicks, take a look through my videos and you'll see this got wildly more views than any of my other stuff, and more subscribers. But your points is right. SW Legion has better game mechanics and is therefore easier to play. Unfortunately, there are only 5 armies in the game so far and it is not clear where to draw more from, unless some kind of Old Republic or Sith Empire will be introduced.... The lack of a larger number of different armies is probably the only serious drawback of SW Legion. On the other hand, WH40K has a much longer history, but GW are afraid to change the game mechanics in a radical way so as not to push legions of old players away. As a result, WH40K's mechanics are far inferior to SWL's and are similar to the Kalashnikov assault rifle, which was invented half a century ago and has remained largely unchanged until now....

Thanks for your ideas, they do make a lot of sense. I haven't thought about it. However, I will note that I find it hilarious that in order to have more armies you suggested the old republic era factions and did not mention the sequel trilogy. I agree more factions could be fun. Expanding the "battleforce" idea could be interesting way to get more factions. The hutts, the Chis, Mandalore. There are ways to do it Disney's options aren't nearly as good as the EU options in my opinion, yuuzhan vong would have been great. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. Have a great day.

@@brokengalaxygames Of course, the easiest thing to do would be to introduce the New Order and the New Republic into the game, but the New Order is basically the same Empire, there's nothing new about it, apart from the slight difference in the shape of the helmets of the strikebreakers, and the new Red Emperor's Guard, and I don't even know what to say about the possible new New Republic units... The game needs something new, not the same thing in a different pocket... Of course, until Disney does something about the Old Republic and the Sith Empire, they won't appear in the game, because it's all in the paws of the mouse... I'm afraid that a game that doesn't get any new stuff and blood might just wither away and die quietly, because the number of stuffs that can be used to create new units and armies is quite limited.

I like you statement and now you make want to try out another faction in 40k. I just think you are missing one important factor that Star Wars Legion is less intimidating to go in and to start playing for those that wants to try out some wargames for the very first time is better to enter on something the people already know already Star Wars is something that everybody does know. making it easier for new and ignorant players that want to try out wargames

Exactly this - I have never played wargames - but was dabbling in lego table top game designs (video coming soon plug haha) - but while researching wargames decided I want to play. Reading all the rules / watching videos and I just through legion looks more fun, faster paced and engaging, its something I could convince my wife and friends to play. 3months, 2 core boxes, wookies, aat, fluttercraft, yoda, upgrade droids, maul, super tactical (and probably more!) its certain to say I am hooked and getting my friends on board too. One of them has some warhammer but hasn't played in years was trying to pick up the latest edition with his brother who is into it, but saying it wasn't for him, joined me and a friend for a game of legion, it just clicked for him, the simplicity of the dice rolls, the cards with all your information. We were still playing at 2am and he is ready for another game!

I completely and totally prefer legion myself. So, I agree that 40k is raising their prices. I try to always buy stuff on sale. I've never bought a GW product at retail price. But personally I don't really care that a company is just trying to make money. I don't need GW to care about me. If things get more expensive I buy less, and if they get to expensive I won't buy it at all. I understand them pushing their prices to find the balance of supply and demand. @@brokengalaxygames 40k is like a self fulfilling prophecy were it is popular because it is popular. As a game it is totally a game in service of miniature sales hence the absolute bloat in the model ranges and hence in the special rules.

​@@bradp6452 I would say the same of world of warcraft (swtor vanilla was my favorite mmorpg.) But for a lot of people it is more about the social aspect than the game itself. For others it is more about the fun of painting than it is the game, though 3D printers have a significant influence on the "painter first" people. I'm prefer legion for the simpler ruleset, shorter game times (at least sometimes, a 5 hour game with old friends can be fun on occasion) because I like star wars more and because 40k is so expensive, but I do think there are plenty of areas where 40k is better than legion even if over all I prefer legion.
