The 10 Secrets to Perfect Planned Pooling Crochet Tutorial can be found right here. Marly Bird taught you how to do planned pooling and now she shares her secrets with you for perfect planned pooling with each project. With her help you are going to master the art of crochet planned pooling.
I did use RHSS in Zebra because it has few colors and I noticed that MANY people start on this yarn. I do work in the black for a few stitches and it can be somewhat difficult to see, but you do have a good grasp of crochet stitches and should find no difficulty understanding what I am doing. At least that is my hope. Honestly, I tried to make this as useful as possible.
To clarify a couple things:
I was so caught up in talking during secret #3 that I forgot to do some chain 1's at the start between the sc; oops. It was purely accidental.
But it does prove that as long as you have the same stitch count in the colors the Argyle will work. Also, skipping the chain 1 here and there is another way to make adjustments necessary to get the correct color in the correct place.
Another thing to make clear, when I got to the end of the row 2 and said my chain two count as my 8th stitch, I'm considering it part of the next stitch on the next row which is the actual 8th stitch. I know that can be confusing and I'm sorry about that. But hopefully you know what I meant :)
That last stitch in black (as in the example) has to be the first stitch of the next row in order for the Argyle to work. Goes back to our adding or subtracting a stitch of the color at the end of row 1.
To try and explain that more: if you subtract 1 stitch you are also subtracting one stitch in that color for that row. So your following rows will have 1 less stitch in that color for that one section.
for example:
You are working with a color sequence of-- 2 white, 7 blue, 2 white, 6 pink...for a total of 17 stitches in a full sequence.
Now let's assume you want to double that so you now have 34. Ahhh, but remember you have to subtract one. So now you will only have 33 and the last color you used in the 2nd sequence will have one less color on each row.
In action it looks like this--
work through two color sequences then I would begin so that the first ch 3 tch are white, then get one more white, then 7 blue, then 2 white, then 6 pink, 2 white, 7 blue, 2 white, 6 pink...pull out one pink so you have 5: that should total 33.
See how the last pink now only has 5 stitches in that color on the first row? You begin row 2 with the ch 2 which counts as a pink and is often counted as the first pink of the first set of pinks on the next row (which will have the remainder 5 pink stitches needed to complete the color stitches at the end of the row since it is split apart).
BUT, you could also think of the entire project like a big snake and think of the pink ch 2 as the 6th stitch of the first row and that you just continue counting the colors in the established sequence snaking the count up each row as you do the tch.
Does that make any sense?

I am waiting for my new planned pooling yarns - Redheart and Premier - trying both - to come in the mail. I've taught knit and crochet and now do it for fun. This all looked like too much trouble...until you all came out with these new yarns...I am hoping that they make this a bit easier and more obvious. Also going to check out how to make some color charts - this is sooooo exciting to me - ready for a challenge. I can't imagine it - but what a trip if I could one day pull off a planned pooling sweater - instead of doing fair isle work. We knitters are always looking for new trends and challenges. More home décor and "weaving" type yarns (using linen stitch) so I can make all kinds of wall hangings - yarn needs to be wool...oh - you guys could make so much money if you can get us all going on this type of thing. Doing a weaving now with knitpicks wool - it's gorgeous...but I want to learn to do MORE of this type of thing. Guide us Marly!:)

Very informative video. I didn't realize that you can go around the foundation chain. Also, you normalized my frustrations. It was good to know that you rip out your stitches often to make adjustments, which was my major source of frustration. Thank you Marley. Would love a video on pooling zig-zag pattern. Also, pooling in the round or on the Addi knitter, if you have that. Thanks again. 💕

Is there a way of looking at a skein of yarn in the store, and know if it would NOT be a good fit for color pooling? Or if it would absolutely work? I was given some yarn from a stash of a local lady, and it has some skeins of variegated yarn, but I'm unsure if it would work with it.

Tip instead of chaining with yarn you are going to pool with chain with another color like color you are going to use for your border and don’t fasten off leave it open ended then start with your first row and work as many color sequences as you want adding chains with 2nd color as needed in order to make your project as wide as you want it

I’m just starting out in my color pooling journey and am trying to achieve the argyle pattern. But my yarn has more color changes than yours and I cannot get it to work out right. QUESTION: how can you tell if your yarn will be more suited for argyle or plaid? None of the videos I’ve watched seem to address this issue. -Brenda

Ooohhhhhhh, so using these techniques, one could use any self-striping yarn to achieve a self-pooling argyle look, not just the yarn Red Heart have designed specifically for pooling?

Can you say something more about turning into the first row of the pattern. I'm thinking that the first 'showing' of the sequence should be the chain that is on your hook before the very first sc? And is there a way to tell if you are starting the 2nd row at the right spot. I understand the counting of the color stitches, but when I start that second row how many stitches, of the beginning of the sequence color, should there be?

once you chain through the color sequence you will have the first color of the next color sequence on your hook. When you turn, and do the sc in 4th chain from hook, those initial skipped 3 chains will count as one stitch....then you work through the color sequence in moss stitch (ch 1, sc) around the chains...counting along the way. When you have the first color of the next color sequence on your hook...you will stop...pull out one full moss stitch repeat (sc, ch1) and that will be the end of your row 1. You now turn, ch 2 and work the moss stitch pattern in the ch-1 spaces. The ch 2 is a stitch and will be counted as one...that is why we work into it.

So, when you turn, does the ch2 count as a stitch, i.e. if your color uses 2 stitches, is that ch2 one of them? I seem to do pretty good, the video is great but I get to row 3 and I am off on being able to stagger the stitiches!

Yes, ch 2 counts as a stitch...that is why we work into it. You also have to remember to count the beginning ch 3 color ;-)

I did not know that Delightful lot number is different. I wonder why. I brought them at the same time. It makes no sense. Is there any reason that they got mixed up on purpose for the same dye lot?

what do I do when the yarn for each colour is too long for a scarf or muffler? It's around 40 to 50 stitches for each colour. will it work, or should I change the wool?

+Lahib Alsamarraie If I did that it was purely by mistake. I tend to lose track of what I'm doing as I talk. Having said that, you could eliminate the ch1 on some stitches to get the correct color placement :)

hello! you said, you prefer to have 4 stitches of same colour, but at least 2 stitches should be of same colour. So, that is least, what about the maximum limit? my wool goes on n on till the colour changes. should I go ahead with planned pooling with it? Pl advise, thanks
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
You could have many many many stitches per color but that would make the project HUGE. If you are using a wool that has a VERY VERY VERY long color change (like a Caron Cake or Mandala yarn) I would not use it.
