I have a new obsession! Planned Pooling is so much easier than I thought it would be and now I want to do it all the time. If you learn this, your friends and family will think you are a master crocheter, no one has to know that it is really so simple to do. And then, once you learn it, the possibilities for how you can use it are huge! I have made this video to simplify all that I have learned from all the other videos and blogs I watched and read when I was absorbing this technique like a sponge. I took out all the complicated math and stuff and just got down to business.
As part of this video, I am compiling a list of all the yarns I know about that you can do this technique with and I need your help to add to it. I have made it alphabetical within each brand too, because working off this huge list when you are in a craft store is hard enough without having to hunt for the name of the yarn. Please comment with any you know of that are not on this list.
I am now an affiliate with Amazon, Dollar Tree, We Crochet and Lion Brand! That means that if you choose to buy from any of the links below, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Amazon... you will find most of this yarn here, just do a search by name
www.amazon.com/b?_encoding=UT...
Lion Brand is my favorite yarn, I am so excited to partner with them!
shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=102607...
We Crochet is a great site with lots of free patterns and great yarn you won't find in the stores!
shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=143534...
Dollar Tree has a lot of great options if you want to buy in bulk!
shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=200175...
Now you can find my list of poolable yarns with photo examples on my blog. There you will also find my video that teaches how to find pooling yarns without a list.

Oh my gosh it certainly is a rabbit hole. Once I learned how I couldn't stop for months and even now every time I am shopping for yarn I go to the previously ignored variegated colors and see if I can pool with them. It is so fun! Check out the cocoon sweater I made with planned pooling too. I plan on doing a beanie for Christmas in it. Basically anything you make out of a recipe angle or square can be made with pooled argyle! My grandmother taught me a bit too, but I was too young to really be into it. Then when my grandma passed away someone bought all her yarn and used it to make me a blanket, then she gave it back to me. That made me really want to get serious about it, but I was too busy with college and work and kids and life until my 30s when I needed an escape and got into it more. I am mostly self taught except the basics and the desire that my grandma gave me. ❤️

I'd never heard of planned pooling before, but I recently made a hand towel, and somehow accidentally got this, like, trellis pattern? And the year before that, I knitted a pair of christmas socks using red/white/green and somehow, some way, got like candy-cane-esque spirals going up the calves, I thought it was just a happy coincidence. After the hand towel accidental lattice I was like "well wait a minute, there's gotta be more too this" and I landed here. I'm currently working on a different project, but as soon as I finish, I'm gonna dig out some variagated yarn and use this planned pooling thing. See if anything comes out of it. Thank you for the guide.

I'm a newbie to color pooling, I have seen a few different videos that are supposed to teach the BEST WAY to achieve the argyle pattern but your video seems to be the clearest example that I have seen. My daughter picked out some yarn to make blankets for my granddaughters and one of the ones that she chose was Red Heart Bon Bon... I have been creating planned pooling plarn. One bag loop is close to a single granny stitch cluster. In plarn, because you can't really vary tension, it's easier to sneak a single crochet in place of the doubles as needed to keep the transitions in the right place.

Yes, you can actually color pool in all of the basic stitches, but some show it off better than others. I am currently working on a long color change color way (red heart granny square yarn) using a shell stitch because it eats up so much yarn and makes those long color changes more manageable. I have a video that shows how to use the mini granny stitch to pool. One e you understand that concept it's easy to apply it to other stitches. Can someone tell me if it counts as one of your stitches when you're counting when you crochet up?
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper Жыл бұрын
It depends on the stitch. If you are pooling with moss stitch or single crochet then no. With double crochet then the chain 2 before you start the row might count as a stitch or it might not. Just be consistent. If you are doing a fancier stitch then it completely depends on the stitch.

Is ombre yarn poolable? What shape do the diamonds take?
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper Жыл бұрын
So "ombre" is in the eye of the beholder. Different makers call different things ombre so it's kind of hard to say. I believe the yarn called Blueberry Hill that I used to make the sample swatch in this video is considered an ombre. Personally I think the only difference is that the colors fade together instead of having distinct color breaks but by that definition almost all variegated yarn is ombre. As far as the shapes go, I like that to be a surprise. However there is a website called plannedpooling.com that allows you to plan your shapes ahead based on what stitch you use and how many stitches per color you do. It's fun to play with.

When I unpick, the yarn stretches. How do you deal with that when the length is so critical?
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper 4 ай бұрын
I have never heard the term unpick, is that the same as frogging or undoing the stitches? Honestly it has never been an issue. Sometimes I feel like people overthink this technique because it seems super technical. They count how many stitches you get from each color, they think hook size makes all the difference and they map it out ahead of time....I don't do any of those things. I just go off of where the color changes land. It has never steered me wrong. And if you want to get into changing the pattern, you can do that by adjusting your tension. I did a video for two twisted cowls. One had the argyle pattern and one was in a zig zag pattern and I show how to adjust your tension to do that. Here's the link if you want to see it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKS6kq2BYq2sosksi=innFlolcIqAvsLr4

I haven't done that yet but I'm sure the minute I do, I will teach it. I could look into it.

It looks like the plaid version is done using the same technique as the arguile but using Bernat Blanket yarn which has less colors, at least that's what Google is showing me

Ha! That's what the industry is calling "pooling" right? I have almost died making simple tartans with crochet and knit😬- then this "pooling" found me. Now it's a matter of finding yarn with "color way" that "pools" the tartan you want. "Pooling" does, however make the pattern a diagonal layout by design.

Argyle to strip!!!! How would it be done without sorcery?!?!!!!

Haha ..I know it seems that way but it's just a slight adjustment to the tension so that the colors stack directly on top of each other instead of being offset by one space. It's fun to play with.

You basically make a long chain and the moss stitch (sc, ch, sc, ch) for a row or two so you can reliably count how many stitches each color makes. It’s best to write it down if you’re unsure. Then, when working the actual project, you have to pay attention to each color having the EXACT number of stitches you wrote down. So you have to make stitches tighter if the color runs a bit short, or looser if it runs a bit too long. After about 10 rows of this it should start to get easier.

I wish you'd last it flat between rows so we can actually see how it looks. It's really hard

I have three other videos about planned pooling so if this one isn't working for you, you could maybe try one of those. I recommend " Can You Color Pool With This Yarn? " here's a direct link to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYebeKprrMx9obMsi=vvamHUxe2m4gaUNr

You know, you could just your starting knot farther up instead of chaining stitches you won't use

Well in my experience, you won't know exactly how long of a chain you will need until you do the row after the chain. But if you are so good that you can calculate it exactly, then definitely do that. I, however, am not that good. 😁

It would be easier to understand if you stayed with one yarn and didn’t talk about all the variations and your many experiences with other yarns.

I feel like there are lots of other videos for that out there and I am trying to teach how to color pool with any yarn which is what I expand on in the Can You Pool With It video. I do appreciate your input though. Everyone learns differently.
