Luxury items are the first products to feel the sales pinch. In fact, when you can buy an accurate, durable timepiece (Casio!) for about $20, probably any automatic watch over about $200 could be considered a luxury item!

Great list. For me, I will admit to find Seagull or Sellita movements more fascinating to learn about than, for example Patek. Mainly because I am a bit afraid that I will become obsessed and do something stupid like buying a Patek. Which for me at this point would be astronomically stupid because it would ruin me financially for a long, long time. I have slightly started to look into Omega and Rolex movements and models, and also a little bit of Pateks and APs, but I need to know I can trust myself before I dive head first into that universe. But, I also think it's really interesting to look deeper into brands like Bulova or Tissot, which has long, rich history, but with a much kinder price tag. And, I can appreciate a 50 year old Certina as much as a Daytona, and I will "judge" them more equally regardless of what logo is stamped on the crown, taking the price and all that into consideration, obviously, but I won't shove away the €400 Certina just because it's a €400 Certina. And in regards to luxury, I like to think of my selection of jackets as a luxury; there's a few mid-range leather jackets (which all fits me perfectly, and are of great quality for the price), then there's a wool-coat I had sown to fit me better at a tailor after I bought it and lost weight, then there's some Armani's, etc, and for the price of all those jackets I could probably get myself one really, really high-end leather jacket (or a Tudor Black Bay Crono). But then I wouldn't have the option to choose, and my whole wardrobe would have to circuit around that one jacket. I'm not a very wealthy man, and I'd rather have some affordable things to chose from, than just be forced to pick one, same goes for watches, whiskey and women. Variety is the spirit of life.

Great book to read, which I'm sure you have, but 'Longitude' had me gripped from start to finish. Very much speaks to the 'Horology' you reference. Great and interesting material in your videos as always Mr T, thought provoking, and agree completely about the definition of a gent. As in The Bards Henry IV, and the example of nobility, at Agincourt, being found in the Archer who defended his injured horse with his life. And I believe that one of the pillars of 'noblesse oblige' is understatement.

I fell in love with the Rolex Submariner at 16. With prices as they are I know I'll never own one, so I bought an Invicta Pro Diver to scratch that particular itch. Meanwhile I own six Seikos, a Casio, a Citizen and a Bulova. The most expensive is the Bulova at around $350. I'm looking at Orient next because I don't have one and they have some beautiful affordable examples. I would never look down on someone who only collects affordables due to financial constraints, that would be silly. I also don't look down on someone who only collects luxury watches...UNLESS they are snobbish about it. Even then I dislike the person for their snobbish attitude, not their choice of watch.

Great content. Reverse snobbery is a bigger issue than watch snobbery I find out on the West Coast. 1) Those who believe entry level watches are on par with watches that are of haute horology and then disrespect those that have higher-end watches because they consider it to be a waste of money. I find that most collectors that have Patek's, FP Journe, or JLC, also have Seiko's, Swatch, Timex and lower-end watches as part of a well balanced collection. In fact, I've never met a high-end collector that thinks lesser of inexpensive watches. I have met many people who buy their first Rolex that fit the image of watch snobbery and do look down on collectors with inexpensive watches. 2) The issue I have with inexpensive watches is that MOST of these watches lack a story or even worst - have manufactured stories. It's okay to enjoy an inexpensive watch, but it is important not to manufacture a story or fake historical references. 3) Watches that call themselves Swiss when manufactured elsewhere. 4 Quartz Snobs - There are many very nice quartz watches out there - FP Journe Elegante, Grand Seiko Quartz, Breitling Emergnecy etc.).

So true about Quartz too, I think I did a video just on that alone, so true! Balance is so important in a collection, excellent point too. As for lack of story, well, true too, but everyone has to start somewhere. Heopfully, brands like Lorier, Hemel and Dan Henry blaze the trail in bringing cool designs and value to make up for it. Thank you Paul, loved hearing your feedback. Best regards, TGV

@@CN-wt2bj False. Da Gama, Magellan, and Elcano were far more adventurous. Da Gama: On July 8th, 1497, Vasco da Gama led four ships with 170 men from Lisbon. The distance traveled in the journey around Africa to India and back was greater than around the equator. Ferdinand Magellan: He led the first successful expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. The exact distance he traveled around the world was 14,460 leagues (43,400 miles or 69,800 kilometers), this is a little longer than three years. Juan Sebastian Elcano: He was a Basque sailor who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in human history in the Magellan-Elcano expedition. He decided to take command of the expedition after the death of Ferdinand Magellan. (Google is your best friend)

There was no such person as Captain Cook. James Cook never actually held the rank of Captain - he never commanded a ship large enough to warrant that rank. He was a lowly Lieutenant when he came to Australia.

This is an excellent list of suggestions of a better way to live. I’ve been working on many of these for a long time, as I grew up in a very negative, judgemental home where everybody else was judged beneath us. This is, at best, a miserable way to live. I’m a much happier person learning to be positive, compassionate and kind, particularly with those I disagree with and used to look down upon. You are one of the first KZbinrs I encountered when I became interested in watches a few years ago, and I’ve always appreciated this aspect of your channel and your personality. Keep up the good work, there are always those who need to hear this message, including myself. 👍

I was going to make a video on my channel on this because I'm on the forums alot and I see it daily. one example is one guy posted up his new rolex. i forgot what it was. anyways people commented and one guy said "ur lucky i cant even get on a list been to 50 AD's" i said, "it sucks rolex doesn't want your money, try Omega" and he said "sorry its rolex or higher for me" and i said "thats a shame" then some other guy commented and he went off on him. i didnt read it or care enough to go through it but i knew it i knew it i knew it that he was like that. too ez

Escapement & Watch walked into an AD for many brands and inside was a watch group that had the word horology in their name. They asked me to join and if I heard about the meetup on the forums. I said no I just came to browse. They asked me to stay but everyone else that came they asked what was on their wrist but you could tell right away not being up close what luxurywatch everyone was wearing. I was wearing my auto Timex. Their whole conversation before I couldn’t stand more than an hour and left was about John Mayer and his Rolex watches that they want and doing ten around flights just to go toADs that called them up saying to come collect a watch as they were next on the list. Pateks, APs, Rolex, moser-_- . They were clearly snobs as most of them were losers, CEOs or getting paid 7 figures and didn’t even own entry or even mid tier brands. Only one or two started collect more than ten years ago so had humble beginnings
