Hello sir, today was a great find. I was cleaning my attic, found a citizen automatic watch. At first I thought it was a quartz, so I thought of changing the strap and buying a battery. Then I read on the face and it said automatic. I wound the minute hand, moved around the watch and.... it started working. Yay. I wore it with its worn out belt throughout the day while cleaning to give it a charge. I later asked my mom about it and she said it belonged to my late dad. It was gifted to him in mid 1980s. Wow. It is still working. It probably had been in rest for nearly 18 years. I have actually tagged you in the tweet with a photograph. When the second hand started sweeping, you came on my mind and I badly wanted to share it with you sir. It was a great find. :')

Mark McDonnell You actually can put a monetary value to enjoyment. Yes it’s still somewhat subjective but what could you have done with that money that could have offered more or the same level of enjoyment? Could there have been more enjoyment if you were to have bought something else? You could buy a new Mercedes E Class for $60,000 or you could defer your enjoyment for 3 years and then pay $27,000 for the same car. Was saving $33,000 worth the deferral? Everyone has a price including enjoyment.

Such a great message mate. My Dad passed away in 2014 and I recently came into possession of the watch he wore for years. It's a very inexpensive quartz and many people probably wouldn't look twice at it, but it's worth more to me than all my others put together. It proves to me that the value of a watch is in the way it makes the wearer feel and the memories it may preserve and no one has the right to diminish that or try to take it away from you.

Back in the mid-80's, my girlfriend at the time (Who is now my wife of 34 years) bought me a low end Swiss made quartz watch. It is a 14k layered gold Andre Chavez with a black dial. It has a day/date complication window at the 3 o'clock position and I have completely ruined the outside of the watch and the glass. If I had all the money in the world I would own a bunch of nice watches like Rolex and the like, but that Andre Chavez would still be my favorite watch.

I wanted to comment on this video. I have watched many of your videos and wanted to say thank you as I think you bring an interesting twist to horology that many miss. I bought my first mechanical watch (Poljot)in St. Petersburg in 1996, and was hooked. At that time, if you had any type of western watch, it was almost guaranteed that someone would try to steal it. I had it happen quite a bit, and my comment was, 'hello, it's a Russian watch', but a very classic chronograph, so it got a lot of attention. Over the years, I have lived in Sweden, then Switzerland for 12 years, Spain, and back in Sweden, but originally American. My collection now is about 60 watches, give or take. I have never sold a watch that I have, so in that I would say I cannot be counted as a true collector, as I cannot give up something which I have bought. I tend to buy watches based upon the story behind them, or a passion for something that comes up. For instance, I have a Poljot Okean, which a neighbor in St. Petersburg had, as he was a retired naval aviator, and I just loved the look and the story. The same when it comes to the Vostok Amphibia. I have a Submariner, which I don't wear very often, but have it as I bought it when I was first in the Navy, and spent all my money on it at the time, and have loved it since. Living in Switzerland, I was visiting Baselworld with a friend quite regularly and acquiring watches quite often, however my goal has always been that which is unique, with a great story and above all else a great value. Oris has been my brand of choice for quite some time, and have noted your appreciation for the brand. I have large wrists, so the large sizes are a good thing for me, but appreciate your comments on how the size needs to be wearable for the user. I have just acquired the Bulova Lunar Pilot, and am really excited to receive it, as I have the Speedmaster, and the Okean, so this is another watch that appeals, need to check out the Fortis still. Later this year, I plan on adding the Sinn 104, and this is solely based on your videos. I love the desciption that you have of this watch, and absolutely have to have one as it ticks my boxes. I look foward to watching more of your videos, please do continue, as I continue to learn from you, and I love to introduce people to the world of horology, and after talking with them, I invariably point them to your videos. Best Regards, John

Thank you for your time to make these videos, very entertaining and informative all at once. I'm about to purchase a Seiko "Bottle Cap" automatic with a blue face and bezel plus a reveal back, model SRPC63K1 with 4R36A movement, have you reviewed that watch? I'm prone to damaging watches and don't have thousands to throw down for a watch so I'm thinking of also picking up a Citizen "Drive" Eco-drive watch with a blue face plus a Cool-Fire solar atomic for $70 that comes with a LED charge station which sells for $30 alone. Yes, you've inspired me to get these three watches because I think I'll enjoy them, I like their look and I wanted to experience the Eco-drive solar powered watch. I'll do my due diligence first and search for reviews on all three. The problem is that I spend all my time watching the reviews instead of shopping for the watches. I'll check back to see if the trolls have shot my selections full of holes in the comments. I could spend the $350 on a single watch but I couldn't decide on just one and I'll enjoy the three options more. Maybe I'll start my own channel for watches under $200.

About mechanical and digital watches... I genuinely love them both. And they both are actually mechanical. One is mechanical and the other is quantum-mechanical. And it's not a play of words or simple semantics - they both really are made of atoms - and in both, either single atoms or collection of them, are moving. While the mechanical watch is difficult to make, it "only" requires skilled craftsmen, some tools and understanding of classical physics and mechanics. I say "only", because that's actually quite a lot. But to make a digital watch - that requires a revolution in physics and understanding of the very fundamentals of the universe. It took all the brightest minds of the 19th and 20th century (Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Niels Bohr, Max Planck, Paul Dirac, and many many others) to come up with and formulate the modern quantum theory - which lead to all kind of applications - computers, lasers, internet, etc - including a digital watch. Quantum physics is the greatest intellectual achievement of the humankind, and digital watch is one manifestation of that. That's why digital watches should be highly, highly appreciated.

On the retaining value thing , I buy watches that I find aesthetically pleasing to me and I have no plans to resell them. Funny... but my Suunto D6, an actual (gasp... quartz) dive computer that's been underwater with me several hundred times, and down to well past recreational scuba depths, is "only" 150m . Dunno what to say. It's worked for like a thousand hours plus underwater with nothing but battery and gasket changes. I haven't seen anyone in over a decade actually rely on a "dive watch" for diving. It just doesn't make any sense, when for the same or less money you can buy a full fledged dive computer with ten times the functionality and significantly better safety. Last time I actually used a dive watch for diving was 1995. These days if you're into diving casually enough that you don't have a computer, you will surely be on a guided dive, where you don't even need a watch. I lived in Asia teaching scuba for a year, and I can't recall ANY of the people I worked with owning what watch geeks would consider a "dive watch," it was 100% non dive watches and dive computers. Most of the instructors just wore a D6 as their one and only watch.

@@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски Something like that. If an instructor is going to sink money into something, it'll be a dive computer. Once a dive bum instructor shells out $1k for a nice computer, there's not much attraction in spending more on a dive watch for fashion. If you're actually going to dive, a watch makes no sense, when you can get a computer for the same price as an SKX. All the students were given a basic Suunto computer to wear, so there's no need for them to have a dive watch either. Heck, I mean, I wouldn't even dive with my dive watches, there's no point.

TGV couldn’t agree with you more on #9 (quartz hate) “every collection needs at least 1 quartz piece” I’m so glad my Tissot perpetual calendar isn’t mechanical and as you concreted it opens many of us up to models that we can’t obtain with a mechanical movt.

Hey, TVG, as usual I love when you do these types of vid's. Wish more people lived by them. I follow a few others along with you that review different watches, brands & topics like this. Recently, I replied to a comment someone made on a video. I prefaced my response with "In the end it's up to the buyer to decide if a watch or a brand is good for them. I made a correction to part of their comment & I received a reply that took it to the gutter. After a couple days of stewing over it, I decided not to reply. I am a Seiko guy thru & thru. My Dad gave me my first real watch in 74 & it was a Seiko automatic. I still have it. Aside from a vacation beater watch; my first "real" non-Seiko buy wasn't until around '09 when I bought a TAG. I own about 15 brands from around the world. Most ⬆️ comments I get are when I wear the hated "I" brand. Pushing 60 in age; not a kid.

My pet peeve, among many, is people who style themselves experts and launch into a hyper-fine grained pontificate explanations to make folks think they know what they're talking about ... and they're wrong. It irks me because while I might know enough to know they're wrong, many or most who see their drek will take it as gospel and be horribly misled. For instance - There's a guy who wrote a long article in more detail than anyone could ever want about "why your watch winder is destroying your expensive automatic". He made a few valid but nevertheless trivial points about watch winders in general and his main theme was that it is the torque of the winder that is the chief villain. The proof he offered is that your watch might keep time differently in the winder than on your wrist. To condense and paraphrase, he said "Because the winder is supplying a different kind of torque than the watch experiences on your wrist it may run a few seconds slower or faster than it does when you wear the watch. This is proof that something bad is happening to the watch." More or less. He seemed completely oblivious to the fact that an automatic will beat differently depending on several factors and a big one of those influences is the orientation of the watch to the pull of gravity. This is why "regulation" of an automatic is not the same thing as "adjustment". An automatic watch is regulated by averaging its performance in several different orientations (flat right side up, flat upside down, on edge crown down, on edge crown up, etc.) and then adjusting the watch to keep the best time it's capable of through all those possible orientations. Because your wrist, unlike a watch winder, doesn't stay in only one plane but passes through all of them in the course of you wearing your watch. So the winder causes the watch to only operate in that single plane and the beat of the watch is constant to that orientation. I'm maybe not explaining this real clearly but the upshot is he was comparing apples to oranges and calling the results bananas. He also was totally indifferent to the fact that the watch is far, far safer and in a much friendlier environment inside that winder than it would be on the wrist of a yacht crewman performing his duties and functions. The very idea that residing in a watch winder is more dangerous to an Omega Seamaster than being on the wrist of a crewman climbing rigging, cranking furiously on winches, snorkeling to scrape marine life off the hull, banging on sailcloth and booms while reefing, cooking, navigating and plotting, doing laundry, etc. -- *IS ABSURD.* Certainly if the watch can take that kind of thing, and they do for often decades between servicing, it's not going to have any trouble with the nice, quiet, calm, rhythmic, climate controlled interior of a decent winder. This might seem like a petty pet peeve and if so bear in mind it's not JUST watch winders that this kind of nonsense applies to. In the case of winders I shudder to think how many people read that article and chucked out a perfectly good watch winder because it was 50 TPD (Turns Per Day) outside of the manufacturers ideal recommendations. I have watches that have literally lived in winders for over a decade with no harm done to them at all. I have one that I keep in brand new condition, it was purchased in 2005 and hasn't been out of the winder for more than a month cumulative total. I only wear it for certain things and those things occur rarely in my life. So it's been patiently turning over every day in that winder for nearly a decade and a half. Without being serviced. It's fine, it has a twin with a different trim package living right next to it in the same winder that is all beat to hell and they both keep the same time within manufacturers design specifications. The beat up one has been on my wrist more than off it for the same amount of time. I set the winder to the second highest bi-directional TPD and forgot about the settings for over a decade. I see this same sort of thing constantly on the internet. I smoke cigars, according to the "experts" I'm doing it all wrong, for the wrong reasons with the wrong techniques at the wrong phase of the moon. I use fountain pens, according to the "experts" I couldn't possibly be enjoying some of the pens I own, and I certainly do. I drink bourbon, same crap with that -- If it doesn't cost a thousand dollars a bottle I might as well be drinking Sterno. I smoke pipes and according to the "experts" I'm doing it all wrong even though I've been smoking tobacco pipes longer than those same "experts" have been alive. Etc., etc., etc. ad nauseam. The very worst offenders are firearms "experts", those guys seem to think that if they can't tell you you're going to die from a couple thousandths of an inch difference in specs between one standard and another their penis will shrivel up and blow away. And anyone who dares disagree with them is already a genderless eunuch. Equally as aggravating is the internet troll who will read a short essay like I wrote above an then pick out one sentence clause totally out of context to "correct me", thinking that demonstrates his superiority. Most of them are usually wrong *TOO.* They just don't know enough to know they're wrong. So hey, TGV? I'd just like to say that I really appreciate your approach. You're absolutely right, there's a lot of room in the world for differences and those differences are a feature not a flaw. If you want to wear a G-Shock, wear a G-Shock ... I don't wear them but you'll know what time it is same as me. Any watch that tells time is better than no watch at all. If you like winders, use one and if not then don't. If you want to spend your time looking for a good $2 cigar that gives you 95% of what a $20 cigar does, more power to you. Anyone who attacks us for this kind of attitude is the one who is "not getting it right".

You got me into watches, dont stop encouraging newcomers! The first watch I bought was a Seiko 5 SNK807 and its perfect for my skinny wrist, BUT, its brand new and I dont dare to study the internals... Yet. So I bought a pre-owned non functioning Tissot T classic Tradition quartz chronograph, and its so newbeginner-friendly, with everything protected besides the battery. So I got a 4 dollar battery and changed the old one, it now works perfect! :D Just ordered a 10 dollar mechanical hand wind from India, so the plan now is to perform surgery on it, for learning purposes, we'll see how that goes. Regards from Norway :)

Yeah, my 1979 Omega Cosmic 2000 which had just come back from a complete overhaul of the movement and dial through Omega in Switzerland, as the lady was setting the watch for the day/date function, it was not turning like it was supposed to. Then suddenly the crown just popped right out. I didn't freak out or get made and the lady and I just looked at each other and were speechless. I knew that no matter what would have happened that they would have covered for the repairs. Of course it was sent right back and fixed. However, this experience didn't make me not want to use Omega ever again, or trust them. Its done by hand so of course human error has to be taken into account and expected. They did what they were supposed to and sent it back with no problems at all and now it runs perfectly with the crown feeling sturdy when I pull it out. Just wanted to share my experience! Just laugh it off!

I like your presentations & observations, more & more each time I watch a video. In the time of such gross ugliness of humanity in main stream politics in the USA, to hear you state respect for "humbleness" is heartening. It's called humility, which you know doubt know, just that you were in the moment whilst making this video. Keep going & please posting. You are terrific, Mate!

Thanks for the life advice at the end. I am in the situation where I can not really stand people agonizing me. Though I always try to be nice to everybody, there will be someone hating me for no reason eventually, and that cycle is eating me inside out, again. The quote and your positive vibe towards negativities really brought me to a new perspective. I will try to distract myself, and live my life without ruining my mind over some bruised people. Sorry for not relating to the watch, I just want you to know how appreciate the life lesson I am. Keep up the good work man.

I just yesterday spoke to a guy with a nice looking champagne dial/ pie pan looking shaped watch on his wrist. I asked him what it was and Timmy surprise it was an Invicta! Someone from his family worked at Invicta and had a bunch of rare or older low production models and the family member passed and left them to the gentleman I spoke to. That is what sparked his interest in watches and he says he had about 12 now. And I’ll be honest the one he was wearing looked great, not more than 42mm classy leather strap. Couldn’t tell you what it was but I loved that he loved it and it made me look at Invicta differently. 🍻

Excellent video! I got my first Hamilton automatic a year and a half ago. I have a few (3) quartz watches that I have accrued over the years (Timex, Casio, Victorinox). Most recently (for my 61st birthday) I bought an Apple watch 4th generation. All of these have their own appeal to me. I only wish that I would have kept some of the watches I had in my youth. None of them with the exception of a Bullova I got when I was 10 are 'collectable'. Be that as it may, I still am infatuated with time pieces of any sort. I have learned much from your videos and they are the reason I got my Hamilton khaki. Thank you so much for all you do. ---JL Monson---

I try to collect watches, I have 400+ from £2.99 up. Some people consider a lot ugly, beautiful, valuable. However the real point is they have no monetary value once I have purchased them. My collection for my enjoyment. I have never sold a watch in my life and never intend too. I have given watches away to people who seem to really appreciate a particular watch. Mostly to encourage them to see the beauty in watches. I totally agree with your comments, it's a passion the same as my passion for comics. Valueless for anything other than my enjoyment.

Thanks TGV, couldn’t agree more regarding the quartz. I purchased a Certina DS action Chrono and must say i love it, nice, convenient and great looking but most of all great value for money and I definitely wouldn’t part with it. Also when buying watches i really couldn’t care less of what others think, its all down to personal choice and like you say if someone has to identify themselves with an expensive watch to flaunt around for recognition then there’s clearly some inner qualities lacking as regardless of wearing a Casio or Rolex, I’ll judge them all the same as an individual. Don’t forget to lock those Camera’s away Hugo is quick! 🤣

Thanks and well said, TGV!! We should enjoy horology in all aspects. After all, it’s the study of time and the instruments used to measure it. Whether its’s mechanical, automatic, quartz, analog or digital... each brings a unique contribution to our hobby. Price and/or brand should not matter. What should matter is what it contributes to the science and beauty of time measurement.

I agree all of it and particularly the number one. When I choose a watch, I am very picky and could hardly find a suitable watch. Just last week I have settled on a solar casio watch which provide the reliability, convenience, accuracy and aesthetic I want. I want it to be slim watch while I insist there should be lume on the hands.

The first more expensive watch I ever had was a Seiko quartz diving watch back in 1981 that I picked out as a high school graduation gift. It still runs and keeps pretty good time, though is currently in getting a new battery. At the time I got it, it was huge for a watch at 43mm and has a bright orange dial. It's far more in style now that it was at the time I got it, but I happily wore it then and still do. I'm led to understand it's actually got some collector value. That doesn't matter because I'll never sell it and there's not a Rolex I'd take in trade for it either.

I had a brand new Victorinox Swiss Army chrono skipping seconds like the battery was dead. I had a local jeweler change the battery, and the watch started doing it again after a couple weeks. I wonder if it maybe was stored improperly before I bought it, maybe too high temperature for the movement. Too bad, very nice watch for its' level, sapphire crystal and simply gorgeous.

I’m one who can couldn’t care less about appreciating or holding values. I’m that way about cars and watches. Granted this means that I don’t buy all too often. But generally when I make an “investment” purchase I keep it until its lost, stolen or destroyed. That’s why I’m 37 and still have my 68 VW from high school
