One thing that has helped me a lot is using an app called Snupps. It's sort of like Pinterest, you create "shelves" and upload pictures of the photos you want in that shelf. I use it to keep an inventory of my makeup. I have a shelf for each category (blushes, bronzer, concealer, lipstick, ect.) and I took a picture of each item I have. And for my eyeshadows, blushes, highlighters and bronzers I also took swatch photos so I can easily see what it looks like in application. This helps me play with my collection and it is also great for when I am out shopping and want to buy a new product. I can check my phone and make sure it isn't something that is just like something else I already have. It has saved me from buying a lot of stuff. Great video!!

Great video, Kristen! As I've mentioned to you before, creating an inventory this past January was a game changer for me. I update it every three months, and that, along with my weekly makeup baskets, has really opened my eyes as to how long it takes me to make a dent in a product, let alone hit pan on/finish something. In fact, it's not as much fun for me to buy makeup anymore because it takes forever to use up a product. Also, I really hate that I have a "collection." I know a lot of people would probably laugh at what I consider a "collection," but I have like 60 eyeshadow palettes. That's ridiculous, especially given how long it takes to hit pan in an eyeshadow! I'm so thankful to have discovered the panning community! Anytime I start to get the "makeup itchies" (as I call them lol), I watch a bunch of panning/anti-haul videos, and that helps me calm down and realize that I'm just after the thrill of having something "new," rather than buying a product because it's unique or because the color(s) inspire me to creative. In a weird way, I'm actually looking forward to purging quite a few products at the end of the year, which is something that I never thought I'd say this time last year (or the year before).

I'm so grateful to have found the panning community on YT. I didn't really know what to do with my large collection. It was overwhelming and even gave me anxiety and all these guilt feelings. Since I have been panning and been on a no buy, I feel much better. I've been doing the same things as you. I did an inventory, which was shocking to me. How in the world did I own over 200 lip products?? I since decluttered a lot, sent a lot to my sister, haven't bought anything and have been panning. Once that initial urge is gone, it's not that bad anymore. At least for me it wasn't. I can walk into a drugstore and enjoy all these beautiful products and still not buy anything. I realized that I own too many products that I don't like, but bought because of YT recommendations. If something looks fantastic on somebody else, that doesn't mean it looks good on me. I have learned what my taste is.... more natural. All those super vibrant colors that really speak to you in the drugstore are products I'm not very likely to use. So I won't buy those anymore. Thank you for inspiring me! (The same goes for Elle, Bethany, Cherish, Cherise, Charlie and Virginia!) xoxo

Thank you SO much for sharing your experience! I can relate to feelings of guilt and feeling overwhelmed by a large collection. Great job working on panning and not buying as much! Do you do the seasonal project pans or more of an ongoing project pan until you use the item up? An inventory can really be shocking and eye-opening! There were times I looked at the numbers of a few categories and thought "how did I get here?!" and I know quite a bit of it was KZbin recommendations. Yes yes yes to what you said about some colors look great on other people but dont work for me. I feel this way about darker eye shadow. It's not really for me (unless there is a special occasion but that's rare!). Ive been trying to declutter palettes and shadows that dont look as good on me/ not my style and Im very happy with what ive decluttered. Thank you again for your comment ♥

Thank you so much for your sweet reaction! I'm currently still trying to use up 52 items by Fall (also shampoos etc) and so far I've used up 22. I thought I would have used up more items by now, but I haven't. I will continue working on these items until the 21st. After that day I'm not going to pan any makeup, maybe other beauty items, but I don't want to restrict myself in the Fall/Winter, especially the Holiday season. It's my favorite time of year and I want to be able to use everything in my collection and I don't want to neglect other products. I'll probably do another makeup project pan in January. I'm glad that you're doing so great on your less buying/projects pan! Keep up the good work! xoxo

Great tips! Beauty items can be so addicting to buy the latest and greatest. Shopping our own stash can be fun and really eye opening on what we buy the most. I found out I am a gloss-aholic when I did the makeup use up this last Dec (Elle's collab). Still working away at a lot of those products.... I got some helpful tips from this so thank you very much for doing this video! Lots of love to you! xoxo

Kristen, you look so cute! Just dealing with a no-purchase yesterday. The library sells used goods. We saw two nice and cheap, hand-blown glass vases. But just because the price is good and the money goes to a good cause, that doesn't mean we need to bring them into our house. It's hard to walk away, but we have to! We have to learn to window-shop more often, I guess. Appreciate the beauty of the item, and leave it at that. These no-buy videos are very helpful in supporting and encouraging us all who have to learn to pinch a penny or two or three or four!!!! THANK YOU! Denise

Hi Denise, thanks for sharing your story about the vases. I am a sucker when it comes to 'deals'. It complicates feelings about items. I really admire your strength and that you were able to walk away and just appreciate that they were really nice but that you didnt need them. I'm going to try to apply this to non-beauty items (I like to shop at thrift store/ bargain hunt).

Loved your video Kristen and I think every tip was valuable. When my kids were little I never bought anything for myself. I used one palette I would get at Christmas all year. We are in a unique situation having channels here on KZbin. We want to share information with our friends yet not be wasteful. I believe being mindful is the first step. Taking an inventory is something I would like to do and I also loved what you said about spending time with your stash. I am going to start doing more of that. Great video! I have done a lot of downsizing this year in my makeup/skincare collection. One thing that helped me was actually using the samples I have accumulated. When I want to try something new I reach for a sample instead of buying a new product. Truthfully, I had always shoved samples away and forgot about them. So it feels good to not waste them!

About a year ago, I realized I was buying way too much too. Then I read a blog post about someone's "Capsule" make up collection, which was kind of a minimal collection of basically one great item of each product. I loved that idea, but obviously I have too many products still. However, your videos of project pans motivates me to use up my collection too. I have made great progress over the past year, but it takes me a lot longer than I thought to use stuff up. I've also found that I sometimes get bored with using the same products so I found rotating what is in my top drawer helps a lot to make it feel like I am using new things when I am working on my collection.
@thekristenkchannel
@thekristenkchannel 8 жыл бұрын
What a really neat idea about capsule makeup collection. I've heard of capsule wardrobe but not makeup collection. Good idea to rotate your items while still focusing on using up products. Sometimes you just need to use another color or formula! :) That's the reason I decided to do one month one palette, so I could rotate the palettes I have and enjoy them and not just feel like I had to only use my pan that palette.

Your video just showed up in my "Recommendations", it's a sign for me! One of the "traps" I fall into with my overbuying of makeup and beauty items is, buying just enough to get free shipping. With cheaper lines such as Elf, Wet & Wild, NYX, Milani etc., each purchase runs around $35-40, and I think I'm getting so much stuff for so "little" money, but doing this weekly or more often really adds up, and my backups are stashed away in big plastic storage bins, so I don't actually see them regularly. Also, Costco online (and in the warehouse too but bigger selection online) sells high-end makeup and skincare at big discounts, so I purchase items just because they're "a deal". Spending $150 on a skincare cream just because it sells in Sephora for nearly double that is not a bargain for me if I wind up buying more than I could ever use and frequently, too. So, thank you for your inspiring video, I am seriously going to try some of your recommendations. I feel out of control, and It's time to get control over this. Thanks for your great tips and recommendations, I'm feeling motivated now!

Great points, I totally agree with comparing. Even when it comes to project panning, having to stop the comparison when it comes to finishing products. I'm the worst with beating myself up about that.
@thekristenkchannel
@thekristenkchannel 8 жыл бұрын
Lol! This rings true for me too. In the past I struggled with comparing with panning especially when it came to eyeshadow usage! I would see PPanners crushing a shadow or palette and be like, ah man I only just hit pan, or wow I have just a tiny dip going on... But then I realized that I use product differently and that with my eye shape and what looks are more flattering for me, I didnt want to use that much shadow. Some ladies look ahhhmazing with lots of dark eye shadow, but I dont think it looks good on me. Hope you are doing well! I think with panning, if you are using an item consistently then you are doing great!

Love it! I have done steps 1-3 and they definitely helped to minimize my urge to buy. I started out the year strong with a No buy, after doing an inventory, and then kind of fell off mid-year. ***** I'm working on the Morphe 12s palette currently and I'm finding that the colors are very similar...there are like four different golds...which makes it difficult to vary the looks when using one palette exclusively, so I'm already getting bored. I will keep this in mind for future purchases...I need palettes with more diversity.

This was such a great (and much-needed) video, Kristin! Thank you for sharing all your tips. I have recently gone through my makeup collection (most of my stuff was pretty much new, only swatched once) and have given so much to my oldest daughter, and she is very thankful. I am also switching over to eco/green beauty, and cruelty-free. I have only kept the makeup I will really be able to use. I feel so much happier! These are great tips! While I am new to panning (this is the first year that I've tried to actually finish products intentionally), I have found that committing to products has drastically reduced my spending. I didn't know how long some of my products would actually last! So buying backups and more items in the same categories over and over has pretty much disappeared from my spending habits! And that inventory shock...wow. I'm just done buying each season's hyped palette or foundation or bronzer. I have only one face!

I've never had a problem buying make up but I do have a problem buying clothes and I realized that when I had so many clothes I never used/or even liked and ended up decluttering so many items. It was crazy to me how much stuff I really didn't need that I had in my closet. I started project panning this year, but it was more of skincare, haircare and bodycare stuff. I also made a shopping budget for myself every month and if I use it all, that's fine and if I don't, I'll put it away for more expensive stuff. I've also made some money from selling the clothes I didn't need. One thing I'm not going to take out of my shopping budget though, is a new winter coat. My old one has to be at least 5-6 years old and I really want a new one. I don't think having 2 winter coats is too much. I'm also doing this thing where now, if I want new fall/winter pieces (tops mainly), I have to use everything I have in my closet at least once before buying new things. And also figure out, do I want to keep them all. It feels so good to be less materialistic.
@thekristenkchannel
@thekristenkchannel 8 жыл бұрын
What a good idea to sell the clothing items that you arent using. 2 winter coats arent too many at all especially since you have chilly weather and would use them! Please let me know how your fall/winter tops experiment goes (not buying new things until you wear/use everything in your closet).

When I was first introduced to panning, I was so confused and not sure what to make of it. After a few years Ive come to really enjoy trying to use up items and providing a review for my youtube friends. Also, focusing on what Im grateful for in what I already have has been super helpful. It's shifted my mindset

Thank you for such a great reminder. I've been trying to buy less myself. I'm only a few months in to cutting back but I kept finding that it was months later and I still hadn't used items I was buying. In regards to one of your suggestions about using items for a few days in a row, I need to use my lip products for a few days consecutively to decide what colors/formulas I really like and are worth keeping.

When a collection is larger, it's hard to use one item consistently. I found myself with the same issue and by the time I actually got around to using a new item consistently it often was out of the return window. Now I try to use new items right away and for a few days in a row so that I can make up my mind whether or not I want to return it.

Yes LE items are so sneaky and tempting! One thing I was talking with a friend about the other day was how you can't repurchase a LE item after you use it up, so if you really like it we would be SOL. You can resist this holiday season sets! I have already seen a few and they just look so-so :)

Great tips. This is a great list of suggestions. I loved when you suggested before to commit to using something for a week to know if you like it. I've found when trying that idea that I have another tip -- if you think you want to use it and decide not to, ask yourself why. If it doesn't work with the rest of the look, commit to trying a look where it will work and use it. If you're like me and have things you acquired but really never use or actively decide not to use, put them in the "get them out of your life pile" and try to understand why. Understanding why can mean you'll stop buying nude lipstick/cream blush/bright shadow/whatever. Don't buy because it's a trend if the trend doesn't suit you.

Really great video, Kristen! Concerning my make up items, it's separated in two sections: For example, I only have two foundations (one is with more coverage, the other one only to reduce shine, so no coverage at all), one primer, one settng spray, one concealer, two powders, and three blushes. What I'm obsessed with is different eye make up colours, so I have quite a few palettes, lipsticks (too many 😉), and two very stupid categories, because I only use a very fair amount of product (that would be highlighters) and, even more stupid, lipglosses (I use them almost never 🙈). At least I know why I used buying those two last categories so often: because I like shiny, glittery make up products (I only bought lipglosses with glitter in them, never such without) 😂! That's so stupid, and I know that, but sometimes I can't resist, even if I waited some time before buying (a very good tip, sometimes the wish to own a certain product gets less and less, until you don't have the urge to buy it anymore). I really have to work on some of my categories, but the least two... no comment 😂. Have a lovely weekend 💕!

This video is so great! I would love more videos like this because you are so great at low buying and panning and would love any advise you have. Something that I've found helpful recently is getting samples or deluxe sizes of products because it takes me forever to go through color makeup products and even other things like hair products, and the smaller size is more realistic for me to go through (especially because I prefer to buy more natural products which go bad quickly), but it also allows me the ability to try out new products and have some variety.

Kristen, this was such an awesome video. You said a lot of things that I've been feeling the past few months. It is too much and can get very overwhelming. It's so easy to get caught up in it all and I know I have been in that trap long enough. To each their own but I think my going crazy and buying everything new that just comes out is done. I just don't feel that way anymore and for me it's more of a spiritual thing. The Lord has been really showing me a lot of things lately and the over spending on makeup is def one of them. Thanks again for this video. It just confirmed what I've been feeling lately. Luv ya! xoxoxo

I'm so glad that this video was helpful for you ♥ I agree, each person is different about spending and makeup, but it just wasnt sitting right with me/for me. Is there anything you've been reading or focusing on that has helped shed light on things in your life lately? Btw, did you get my response on fitbit messenger? I hadnt heard back from you, so I updated the app and it doesnt show that the message went though :/
@BrownEyedGirlCherise
@BrownEyedGirlCherise 8 жыл бұрын
I did get the message, I'm so sorry I didn't reply back. I don't know if it's me getting older or I'm just tired but I'll be getting ready to do something (like reply to a message), I get distracted by something else and completely forget what I was doing. I hope it's just lack of sleep..lol I don't really read too many books other than the bible or books that are faith based. My faith is extremely important to me and I want to live a life that at the end of it the Lord is pleased with. It's sometimes hard to live in this world but not be of it (if that makes sense). Just like you wrote, it wasn't sitting right with you, the same for me. There's nothing wrong with getting/having things and enjoying them but when it gets to consume or overtake certain things in your life, it's not right (this is just for me, I'm not judging others). I love buying makeup, it makes me happy but I started to notice that when I was over buying "that happiness" was very short lived. That money could be going towards other things and not more un-necessary stuff to just take space in my room that has no real value. Basically in a nutshell, I don't want anything/anyone to come before my walk with God or to hinder it or distract me away from Him. I will share a teaching from our pastor this one Sunday that really hit me and made me ask myself somethings. The pastor was doing a series on "Lures", what the enemy uses to Lure us in. It was cool because he brought a fly fishing pole to drive in the message. There were 3 main points to this message: 1) Lust of the flesh. What is the lust of my flesh? He mentioned to think of something that might be a lust of the flesh and test it out by giving it up and seeing how we would react when we don't have it. 2) Lust of the eyes. Advertisements, (KZbin), that makes us think we NEED things that we really don't. Be thankful and content for what we have and not wanting anything. 3) Pride of Life. How we become God to ourselves when we seldom consider what God wants for ourselves (making decisions w/o asking God in all areas). The messages at my church have seriously been dead on for me for the past month or so. It's not fun sometimes to be disciplined by God and have to be honest about things that we need to work on but I'm thankful that He loves/cares for me enough to do so so that I don't stray away. I'm sorry this was long but I thought I would share. I'm in no way judging others who buy every day, this is my own personal thing for me. Have a great Monday! xoxoxo

great advice! i love the tip on picking up a hobby, i wonder if i could associate the urge to buy something with going to the gym? that would really make my day haha! i would like to add that its important to know your buying habits, like i spend the most online and i do emotional buying. the golden rule for emotional buying is never buying when im SABL (sad, anxious, bored or lonely) because it can really make me break my wallet. also to unsubscribe from sephora and any makeup brands and avoid the makeup aisles when im at the drugstore to buy necessities like shampoo. i also uninstalled any ecommerce app like groupon, amazon, iherb etc since i browse them when im bored.

Thank you so much, I am a very new person in makeup because I am very young, only 21 years old. And I think it is important to actually have a good amount of cosmetics that are loved and used by you. I feel satisfaction when finish something and I like to plan what to use in this season for example for the colours of blush or lipsticks but I have never known that it is actually called 'panning' hahaha :) And also I agree, you start spending too much money, I am a student so I don't want my parents to be uncomfortable with my buying. I think to finish something you should also chose anly products you think you would definitely use. I mean, why would I need 5 red lipsticks if I am a student, teachers are nont very tollerant in those things. And also some girls really do not understand what colours of eyeshadows are perfect for them. I mean I have blue and green eyes. I can not use blue eyeshadow every day because my eyecolour looks grey and not flattering this way. Also the same thing for another products, you have to have a nice taste to understand what is perfect for you personally :)

Hi Anastasia & thanks for watching! You brought up a great point about wearing colors that are flattering. I think sometimes KZbin makes me want to buy items that dont work for me (my skintone, my skin type, eye color etc). It's a learning process. I think it's really thoughtful of you to be very aware of your parents thoughts about your buying ♥

+Kristen Kay I don't even remember how many times I have heard even here on KZbin things like 'I can not use this red blush palette because I am really not a red blush girl, only light pink and apricot colours fit me'! Every time I can not believe my ears becase if I see a beauty youtuber I think that she is super professional and knows everything about at least her own appearence. And maybe sometimes I remember that 2 month earlier she has said that she is on love with that palette and everybody needs abesulutely to try it out. And just a few month later I see her selling it on her instagram. This is so sad, it is so hard to find a youtuber you actually can trust. It seems like or they were paid to make those false adveriticement videos or they really do not understand what they are talking about and have used it 2 time before making a review. KZbinrs really have to be responcible of what they talk about in their videos, if they can afford that blush palette and then sell it half price it does not mean everybody is so rich. You look very professional to me because you try to explain what are the ingredients and who can use products you have. But that is true, sometimes I just can't believe how ridiculous some of the youtubers are. They think we are stupid and try to manipulate with our mind. That is why I think the decluttering videos are very important, they show how hypocrite reviewers can be. We all have to filter youtubers we follow very carefully.

Great Tips! I had to unsubscribe from a lot of the bigger youtubers and stop watching hauls because they made me want to buy more.

I have unsubscribed from quite a few of the big youtubers as well. Some were just tempting me to buy too much

I was finding that I had products I wasn't using because I had to dig to get to them. I reorganized my makeup and sadly found a concealer with one or two uses left that I thought was long gone. So disheartening to know that even though my collection was small, my organization made me think I had less. Now I can easily see what I have and I KNOW what I need or don't need.

This is great to hear Stephanie (that organization makes a big difference even in smaller collections). Glad you have a system now where you can see what you have better :)

I actually think this is the main crux of the matter. We think we have less because we literally don't see everything at once. I counted 10 blushes in December 2015 when I was reorganising my makeup. I haven't bought a single blush since and honestly, 100% haven't been tempted to. I got a real surprise as I seriously thought I had about half this number. Can't see through wooden drawers!!

Way to go not buying any more blush since Dec 2015! I have decluttered to the point where now my blushes can lay flat and I can see them all when I open the drawer & this has helped out a lot!

I can not wait to hear what you are saying..i can not listen here at hospital but I am going to sub and watch to motivate myself

I have to try making an inventory and decluttering as I go along. I have so many lipsticks that I know I don't like the color of and never reach for yet I hold on to them. Why?! So unnecessary. I went on vacation for 3 weeks and brought two foundations, a bronzer/highlight duo, my two z palettes with single shadows, a blush palette, and some lipsticks. That was all I needed to create many many looks, and yet I have 5 more bronzers, 10 more highlights, and 20 more blushes at home (minimum🙈). That was my first Inkling that i needed to make a change. And now You've inspired me!

Hi Becca, I am SO sorry I didn't reply to your comment sooner. I just saw it right now. For the lipsticks, something that has helped me sort through them is to commit to wear one color for 5 days straight, by the end I know which ones will stay and which will go. Traveling is a great way to see that we can live with less than what we have. I think youtube does a good job of making people feel like they are missing out if they don't run out and buy something new/exciting. Have you been able to use up any of the products you listed in the last 3 months? Again, Im sorry it took so long for me to write back

Thank you very much!!! It really means a lot! I have tried to commit on a no buy with two of my friends and it didn't work at all. :( I decluttered my collection recently and today I'll update my inventory to keep track on what I have. Every time I am feeling like buing a beauty product I'll have to check my inventory and watch again this video before. ;)
