this really hit home with me. two things, you briefly mentioned about returning things. This past fall I went a little crazy. what I did, was every new product I put in a special bin. I used/tested the product and what I found is 50% of the products I wasn't absolutely in love with. So I returned them. I;m really glad I did that because it also showed me that I really didn't need to buy the item in the first place. I have not placed a Sephora order since early December. One other point your video made me think of is, remember that when you start buying things it can quickly become a habit. I'm guilty of this, especially early on. just like drinking, shopping, etc. it becomes a bad habit. I hear so many people on KZbin saying "I couldn't resist." or this product is "amazing" when I know they have 50 other products that are "amazing". So basically "amazing" means nothing when used obsessively. lol

I totally agree with you in terms of the point that we buy makeup when we are not satisfied with our body shape!!!! I started hoarding makeup when I gained 10lbs!!!!

Xiaoxiao Hu I think it's perfectly okay to a point, but if you are giving up on other areas of your appearance and overcompensating with makeup it can be problematic. :)

This really resounded with me... I tend to spend more when I am bored or depressed.I also realized that I need to stick to certain colors and shades and stop picking up the items that are not my normal everyday wear.I have put caps on the number of items and I allow myself per makeup category.

+redtango76 I had to put caps on myself for a while, but now that I have a handle on it, I haven't been putting any restrictions and I haven't been buying anything. I have found that there are certain looks that I enjoy and I have what I need to achieve them. Thank you for watching. It is a process! :)

thanks for this video, most everything hit home, military has gotten 5 of 10 anniversaries / birthday, holidays. it can be hard, but looking back it has been my thing to do. going forward I will be more thoughtful of what I'm doing. currently I'm purging makeup, and tackling other areas in our house. thank you for your service

What a great video, Autumn!! As I was hearing you speak, I was reminded of the epiphany I had last year: I was mindlessly buying makeup. The more stressed I was, the more makeup I would buy...and often. Until November 2015, I realized I had more than enough makeup and decided to go on a no-buy. The first month was challenging, but since I understood the root of my problem, I could tackle it a different way. I posted a few decluttering pics on my IG, in an effort to keep me accountable, and I've been doing so well now. I feel very accomplished and I feel very optimistic that I won't purchase mindlessly this year. Thanks for such a great video and helpful tips ... I'm definitely practicing those. Take care!! 👋🏻

I buy things because I squirrel them away. For some reason I think there's going to be some kind of shortage or someone will take away all the skincare and makeup so I buy it because 'then I have it'. Then I'll not buy anything for a couple of months then I go on a skincare splurge or buy all the palettes. In the U.K. You mostly can't return used cosmetics so you get stuck with things that don't work. In 2017 I'm working on breaking the cycle, using up my stash, especially my drawer of skincare 'backups' (for the Skincare apocalypse, apparently) and actually enjoying using things. If I don't like it it goes to my sisters, I donate it or if it's not in good condition, into the recycling bin.

Thanks for sharing your story about make up. Very insightful . I am building a smaller collection and am organizing my current collection and taking inventory before the year ends. I want to make room for the new year. I have been mixing lipsticks to lighten up a burgundy and dark brown. The darker shades I find give me the Goth look. I am fair skinned find I do I need to get the correct shade. I really liked to hear how you paired down your collection. Very helpful tips. Thanks.

This was interesting to watch. I started buying a lot of makeup for 2 reasons. The first being that when I was younger, makeup for African American women was very scarce as far as shades. Now make has come a long way, and there is more selections to chose from. The second reason is KZbin/ Instagram hype.

I agree with getting rid of stuff that's gone bad, except nail polishes - you can use thinners to revive them and use them to the bottom of the bottle! Yay!

Great tips! I seriously need to curate my collection and get over the "it's on sale" or "it's a dupe (of something I'd usually like the original better anyway)" impulse buys. When did we all start needing to huge competitive collections of makeup anyway? I just wish products got discontinued less often so I wouldn't feel like I need backups of a perfect item.

If you think about it, by the time you actually finish that discontinued product, something else better will have come out anyway. Might as well use what you have while you have it and then move on when it's done. I swear that cosmetic companies do this on purpose to make us panic...They either discontinue a product or make it limited edition. It's like we think we will be forever ugly if we don't have that ONE product...haha. There are only so many colors and textures that they can make... There will always be something out there to replace a loved product. :)

This video was so great. I have accumulated so much makeup over the years and have recently purged a lot of it. I always think that the new product I get will make me happy, but somehow I am never satisfied and always need to get more. We all want to try the latest and greatest, and I'm still guilty of buying things, but I've continually been getting rid of things and I'm going to stop buying foundations, concealers, mascaras, lipglosses etc. until I'm down to just a few. Those things go bad really quickly! Sometimes I just want to get out of the house and that is where I go. I left today to get an iced tea and enjoy some sunshine instead of buying things. :)

Awesome perspective, Autumn! I've been trying to downsize as well within the past year. As you said, I'd much rather have a few high quality products that I love and that make me feel pretty than have a massive, totally comprehensive collection. A few days ago I realized that even though I've bought less than 10 makeup products within the past year and have mostly been working off of what I've got, I still haven't even come close to making a dent in my collection. That's pretty ridiculous.

What I find even more ridiculous (for me at least) is the fact that I have hundreds of different products, but I always look the same... haha. We are such suckers! It has definitely made me think about what I buy. I am so jealous of those people who are perfectly happy with their little bags of makeup. I eventually will be one of those people. :)

I recently reviewed why I also buy makeup. I stopped buying makeup I cannot wear everyday: corporate work, everyday for errands, or nice evening look. I just keep my nice makeup for face and eyes. I downsized from 3 cabinets full to one plastic drawer. woohoo!

I have a decent sized makeup bag, whatever doesn't fit in there doesn't stay. Same goes for my other things. Basically my life is in the Alex 9 drawer from Ikea. (Other then clothes and stuff like that)

I bought a lingerie chest for my beauty items. The bottom drawer (deep) is everything for my nails - tools and colors, the drawer (drawer) above that for my hair curlers and certain brushes, next is my face makeup drawer (slim), next is my eye makeup drawer (slim), and the top drawer (slim) is for perfume and body sprays. My rule is that I can't grow above my two slim drawers for makeup. I love watching beauty gurus too, but the reality is that my lifestyle will never support/need the amount of makeup those gurus possess. My other rule is that I'm not allowed to spend over $300/year on cosmetics. I mean, we only have ONE face. How much stuff can we actually use and enjoy??

I wonder though when people have makeup for years and still use it. They look like normal people so maybe the expiration date is not so cut in stone if you don't use it as much? Hey I did a mud run in Illinois last summer too! And I have a thyroid problem too.

Powder products usually stay longer than the suggested expiration date if well taken care of. But, with that being said, using clean brushes in products and keeping them in cool dry conditions really helps them to last longer as well. I will keep powder until it no longer produces pigment, or I find that I no longer need it. I'm pretty strict though when it comes to liquid or cream products... Those tend to breed bacteria quicker. :)

Great tips, I need to go on a no spending list,I used to be able to do tai bo, and walk about 2 Miles everyday then I got super sick! Had a small heart attack, have a very bad thyroid, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis everywhere! I was very fit very active now I can’t barely get through each day I’m in chronic pain a lot of meds and have gained weight which makes me not want to buy clothes anymore! So I buy makeup it’s a problem!! I’ve got my own KZbin channel susiesmakeuptoolcart it’s kind of new, but I truly miss my daily activity and I want my health back, so I improvise with makeup not good! I also see a lot of doctors so yeah this touched base for me!!! Thank you 😊❤️
