My 16 years in the US Navy included 12 years living onboard 3 ships and 30 to 40 sailors in a berthing is a little more restrictive and more like a prison! Sleeping over a sonar dome while sub searching can reduce sleep time!

When it comes to drinking on board. If you fail a breathalyzer, you'll get fired, loose all your certificates and drug/alcohol abuse charge will go on your record if someone does a background check( it will be on your record for 10 years). If any of you know you're going to fail a breath or urine test DO NOT DO THE TEST. You be fired for refusing but you will get to keep your certificates and you won't have a record!!! I've never heard anyone on KZbin talk about the implications of drinking on the ship in this way. I had to learn this at Piney Point during training for NCL.

The cruise life seems like the restaurant life. I spent years in it and yes my work life became my social life, the late nights, the drinks, the cute girls you worked with. You know how it is when you're young and single. It is so much fun but at a certain point, I realized if I wanted a normal married life with kids I had to get out and I did. However the customer service lessons strengthened me and helped me become the better business owner that I am today.

Yes! I worked my way through college working as wait staff for cafes, fine dining restaurants, catering jobs, and diners. I am really grateful for those experiences because I learned how it is to work hard in a service industry. And now I know what it takes to make someone’s food come to their table on time, and how hard people work. I am always a good tipper, and I find that people who have worked in the service industry tip far better and treat wait staff better.

I'm a frequent passenger (HAL) but have cruised NCL a few times. I really appreciate the depth you covered. You confirmed a lot of what I suspected. NCL had more US crew than I've ever experienced. I hope passengers treat crew better as a result of learning about the behind the scenes. The Crew is why so many of us return to HAL. I imagine fans of other lines might feel the same about the crews of their favorite lines.

I would be perfect to work on a cruise ship. I'm former military and used to being isolated. I don't give a damn what other people think of me. I'm in very good shape, but I'm ugly as sin, so there's no worry about hooking up. I have a military pension, so money is not that big of an issue, and I'm super organized and used to working with people. I think I would be good at setting up and managing events and group activities. As a bonus, I also sing, dance, and tell lots of jokes.

Talking about your pay & folks going into debt reminded me of the Tennessee Ernie Ford song. "You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store."

Cruise lines appear quite sketchy when it comes to adhering to labor laws. For one thing you are supposed to be paid during your training period. They sound like a sweatshop. They break labor laws such as not paying overtime for hours over 45hrs/week. They sound like an old mining operation where you owe your soul to the company store.

I didn’t get to work on ships, but back in 2004, Feld Entertainment decided to start a spin-off of Disney on Ice, Disney Live - basically stage shows without the ice. It would open in the Pan-Pacific. I decided to audition for fun. I got a callback audition the same day and a call with a job offer by that evening (after a different audition no less). I didn’t even care what the contract was. I was ready to sign! I have trouble making and keeping friends and unfortunately the same went for that job. The biggest plus was seeing places like New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, and Japan. The downside? Not only did it feel like high school, you are working, living, and seeing the same 45 people day in and day out. I spent a lot of money too, but the experiences of that spending were worth it. I didn’t drink, but I loved to get out there and see a city in my downtime. Would I do it again? Absolutely, but I wish above all else, that I prepared myself differently mentally. The important thing I tell people when they are considering touring/cruising for a living is: can you stand the idea of living and working with the same people for months on end? I didn’t ask myself that at all. I just thought of the travel and nothing else. All 10 things you mentioned definitely related to my experiences.

Add to the communication issue: language differences. I'm retired from the USCG and used to do exams on cruise ships. We would look at various pieces of equipment to make sure everything is as it should be. I was with the safety officer on one exam and asked him if they could pull a fire extinguisher out of it's cabinet so I could check it. He said something to one guy in English. That guy translated it into whatever language the other guy spoke. He took the extinguisher out and discharged it all over the deck (it was carpeted). The safety office looked at me with a welcome-to-my-world expression and just shrugged. If anyone is wondering, we rarely ever found anything major wrong. The cruise industry is very serious about safety and they don't let stuff stay broken for very long.

Awwww Jaaaaaaaay 😢 ... So sorry to hear about your mishap ... Get well soon! 😊 Luv your vids ... This one was insightful as well as "entertaining" ... Cracks me up when folks forget that when they take your comments too seriously 😆 Personally, as a software developer, I can't see myself being able to work for a cruise line unless they want me to teach a class on board ... Not! 😂

Don’t worry I’ll be good as new soon!☺️ I always look forward to the people that take things too seriously… It’s just interesting because I make the disclaimer clear as day! Who knows. You might actually like it if you were to go on board!
