I used to work for Princess Cruises from 2008-2010 as an assistant waiter. My salary was $50 per month plus service charge+tips. In a month I was making $1800-2400. My waiter was waking $2400-4000. At that time $1000 was about 3 average salaries in my home country. Than 2012-2014 I used to work for Viking River Cruses in Europe as a waiter. My salary was €2000 - 2500 per month including tips. At that time about 6-8 times average monthly salary in my home country.

He says room stewards make $1000 per month. I give the room steward $100 per week for my room. If they do 15 rooms and 4 weeks they could make a bunch more in tips. That is 60 rooms per steward per month. I hope they get at least $20 average per room in tips, $1200 additional each month. My wife and I cruised 40 nights last year. I have talked to a lot of cruise workers. They tell me that they do not see any extra money because of the prepaid gratuities. The cruise lines, in my opinion, collect prepaid gratuities or other gratuities and just add that to the cruise line's income. They "use that money" to pay all of the workers on the cruise. Prepaid gratuities is just another way for the cruise line to take your money. They do not collect it and then divide it up as a bonus check after every cruise or even every month. I could be wrong. That is my disclaimer.

I think I can add a bit here to what has already been said by Mr. Scott as my wife and I cruise on the cruise line he works for. I was just on a longer sailing with them, and I was able to take one of their limited attendance "Behind The Scenes Tours" and I also attended a shipboard lecture put on by 5 company cast entertainers who talked for an hour about their jobs. So for entertainer's, they said that they are recruited by the cruise line at mostly conventions for their specific craft (e.g national dance conventions, national or local state / college band /choral festivals, dance festivals, open "cattle calls", etc.) If you are a dance student, you know about these venues. Also FYI, almost all the cast/ensemble performers on our boat all had 4 yr. college degrees in dance, music (voice), musical theater, acting, etc.--and most all were "triple threats" (Sing, Dance, Act). All were either U.S. citizens or Brits. If Variety Magazine is still printing check out their Help Wanted Ad Section or get an agent to represent you. The cruise line Mr. Scott works for recruits all year round. For the spa folks, we went to the spa a number of times and I talked to the ladies who worked on us. All got their training/licenses in their home country, and most had worked in their field in their home country before deciding to work on the cruise line. All the ones we talked to said they were doing cruise work to travel and see the world, and for the good commission/tip money it paid. Everyone we talked to said they were trying to save up money.

..Great stuff, Justin, and well presented. Question: Lets' say my wife and I are cruising and the cruise line charges $30 per day for tips. And let's also say it's on Royal Caribbean where they let you decline paying the tip fee if you would rather tip the individual workers...like waiters, room stewards, bartenders, etc...directly in cash, namely dollars. And let's say it's a 7day cruise, or basically $210 total if you pay the proportional amount to each individual at the end of the cruise. Question #1: is it fair to say the workers generally prefer cash ? and Question #2: do the workers really value a very positive recommendation MORE than the cash ?, which is something I'm told over and over again by the workers at the end of the cruise. Thank you or taking the time to candidly discuss such a delicate subject.

She said she was lucky because one of the entertainers from the ship was with her. They sent a tug boat to get him to bring him to the ship, That's how she got back. She said that entertainment is very important on cruise ships. If that entertainer was not left behind with her she would have either had to find a way to meet the ship at another port or make it back home to her country which would have been a nightmare.

Justin, My family and I love cruising and we love the shows. You guys are unbelievably talented and we appreciate all of the time, energy and effort you all put into the shows all around the ships. I know a lot of the performers also have secondary jobs on the ships and that it’s not only the shows y’all put on. I know the folks on the boats get paid via gratuity collected when we pay to book the trips. I was hoping you’d share your opinion....what do you feel is a fair tip for the room steward on a 7 day cruise? How about for the bartenders per drink? How about the waiters who serve us in main dining? The folks in the spa?

A thousand dollars a month for a poor person who got hired onto a cruise ship is a lot of money. Especially if they came from a poor background at home, like the Philippines. And they probably don't have too many expenses on board. So they probably save up and alsosend someback to their families back home. To those families that is much needed money. American employees on ship probably get much more But that's why cruise ships hire foreigners. They can pay them less and still turn a good profit.

Thanks for your video with the really interesting info. Considering you’re getting living quarters and all food taken care of by the ship, and free travel and medical care and steady work. That sounds pretty good for a young guy. As for the foreign workers, their pay is a lot more than what they could get at home and so they are very thankful and cheerful for the opportunity to work on the ship. It sounds like a win win for everyone.

As far as the pay goes it’s hard to say for sure since I don’t know exactly what job you would have nor do I know what country you’re from. However if you’re from the US. Typically touring/ cruise lines go by the national average which would in 2k/month. Hope I helped!

@@mikeepogeeee again though, did they agree to it? When I was in Iraq the contractors there (doing the same job as me) were paid per day. If they took a day off they didn't get paid. Most of them worked 7 days a week for months on end because the money was so good. Having a 5 day work week is not the norm in the world. If I had a choice between working 7 days a week and putting my kids through school vs being s substinance farmer in the third world I would take the former. Again though, if they were told one thing, then they showed up and weren't being paid what they agreed on or had to work more, consumers should respond. Because in that situation they wouldn't be able to get out of it and go home at will.
