I remember starting about $750 usd at first for the first year and she graduated this year. I paid about $1,100 for the last year. And this school was not based in Manila, but in Nueva Vizcaya.

My gf does something hilarious when she’s angry. Like you Pea, her English is flawless, but when angry she’ll go from English to Tagalog mid sentence. Many of the things you are talking about are what chased me out of the Philippines. In my view, all of the behaviors create an impression of a culture of hopelessness. Don't look forward. Don't plan for tomorrow. It will be just like today. Nothing makes progress in the Philippines because there is no hope. The government reflects this philosophy as well and the powerful stay there by the lack of accountability created by an emotionless, face saving, personally dishonest population that expects tomorrow to be just like today and they expect nothing of today. It is a poverty mindset. And poverty can be crushing. The Philippines is a country with a crushed culture. For a person who feeds off of the energy of their surroundings, the Philippines is deadly. EDIT: AND THEN COMES THE ENDING! A wonderful gesture! I think I will go and reread Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations"

How wonderful Pea. I was so surprised when i found out that the schools charge all kinds of fees that exceed the cost of tuition, effectively doubling the cost and then some. Even if you can get into the schools where tuition is free, as in paid by the government, the fees alone are so high and burdensome they can be enough to cause someone to quit. This is the kind of thing i would do if i had the resources. So after you pay your tuition you have to pay the same amount and more for whatever imaginary fees the school can think up. It's a crazy burden to put on the students.

In my experience, admission of fault is rare among women of any nationality. That's not particularly a Filipina thing and most men are used to experiencing this before arriving in the Philippines. Perhaps that brings the expectation that we would see it less here. Actually, we become willing to put up with it a bit more here, because other aspects of the Filipina personality are a breath of fresh air after the women of the west.

This one hit close to home. My niece is studying to be a teacher there and is also going to be entering her 4th year. Even going to a public school with no tuition, there are many expenses. Uniforms, projects, baon, it just seems to never end. I honestly don't know how most students are able to afford a higher education without having a sponsor. Good luck to Anne and her future!

How much would you say it costs per year? My filipina has 2 years left in her teaching. She doesn't like to ask me for money but does on occasion when her parents are struggling to get money in time for a project or uniform and I am happy to help when I can. She might have to quit if her parents can't afford and I will help her stay studying if I can afford it. When I visited her last month her father was not working as he was waiting for surgery on his arm. I'm sure it makes things more difficult financially & I know she worrys about having to quit school if they can't afford it.

@@stephensmyth7566 there are a lot of variables that go into the cost, especially relating to commute. For my niece I give her a weekly allowance of 2K PHP. This seems to cover most things, but items like uniforms will always be additional. Like most things, YMMV

HI Pea. Another very good post. Very interesting information. My ex wife must have been part Filipina. She never saved, never planned ahead and would never ever admit she was wrong. She had a car wreck once because she ran a red light at an intersection. Some how she concocted a story and said it wasn't her fault even though it was blatantly obvious she was. Also, thank you for supporting Anne. When I was going to college I had to work 40 to 60 hours per week because I paid it for it myself. It took me about 6 years. Anyway, I stuck with it and finished.

Nice surprise ... HAPPY Ending! In your video you stated, "In-laws." Are you MARRIED Now??? Planning and budgeting seem to be an after thought in the Philippines. We know there will be RAINY Days, it is just a matter of when. That is what planning is all about ... having an EMERGENY Fund for the unexpected. I too have experienced giving gifts and NOT receiving a "Thank You." From a Western point-of-view, the receivers appear NOT to be appreciate of the gift. "Saving face" is a dumb thing to do, when you are PROVEN WRONG, you'll look far worse than you would have had you just admitted you were wrong to begin with. Same thing with lying, you look far worse when the TRUTH comes out, and the truth will ALWAYS make itself known, but now you don't just look bad you are also seen as UNTRUSTWORTHY. We LEARN from our mistakes, if you don't admit and accept your mistakes you'll never learn from them and continue to make the same mistakes. It takes a lot of strength and courage to admit you were wrong. Tampo is immature, childish, manipulative, and ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR!. MATURE ADULTS talk about their problems to solve them before they become more serious, you can't do that if one of you isn't talking. I disagree with treating tampo like a good thing, you don't reward a child for poor behavior, why would you do it for an alleged ADULT. You need to put an end to it IMMEDIATELY, if you don't, you are setting the precedent she will get her way all the time and it'll only happen more and more often. Personally, I would NOT accept tampo AT ALL, if she doesn't want to talk to me, then while she's in the bedroom showing her immaturity and not talking to me, she can pack her things and leave and never have to talk to me again. Communication between partners is VERY important in a relationship, and let's face REALITY, men have no clue what goes through women's minds and he's NEVER going to figure out what you are mad about unless you tell him. The problem with surveys/studies is asking people uncomfortable questions can you really trust they are being honest. How many people are actually going to own up to being unfaithful? As far as planning, that can be answered in 2 words "FILIPINO TIME". Fail to plan for your future, you plan to fail in the future. Being overly insecure is a bad thing and will push a guy away. Those insecurities are going to need constant affirmations and that gets EXHAUSTING, and if he doesn't do it once it creates problems that didn't need to be there, and the more he affirms her insecurities the less meaningful they get each time. The same thing with jealousy, excessive jealousy, she shows it and it'll back fire on her as well. If he can't touch his phone or walk out the door without being interrogated she will push a man away because it shows a lack of trust, and without trust you have nothing. YES, he WILL look at another woman and he IS comparing her to you, but he chose you so he WILL find flaws in the other woman and she's not as good as you. Congratulations Anne, I wish you well in the future.

In the west it is easier for students to keep going to school as they can get a job to support their education unlike here where you need a college education just to get a simple job as a cashier in a store. I have two generators. One is gas and one is solar. I have two chainsaws. One is electric and one gas. All kinds of handsaws, all with brand new blades. I wouldn't say I'm a prepped, but just spaghetti, I have 100 pounds. We won't discuss the rest. I usually only go grocery shopping once in three or four months.

I could be totally off base & I don't mean to offend, but not planning for the future is a fairly common trait among tropical cultures. It probably goes back to living in rather flimsy housing which would be scrubbed away at a moment's notice by a flood, typhoon, earthquake, or volcanic eruption. European cultures & those of northern Asia differ in one key aspect. Winter is coming. If you don't plan ahead, you can find yourself literally left out in the cold. People will develop different mentalities when they have to stretch the harvest for six months as compared to being able to walk outside & pick fruit at nearly any time. On an unrelated note, it is bizarre to see beautiful women thinking they're unattractive. We have the opposite problem in the US.

One thing that's become apparent by listening to a friend that's been married to 2 Filipinas, and by listening to your videos, is that most, if not all, Filipinas seem to only think about what's right in front of them. Absolutely no long term thinking, or thinking ahead. They can only see and react to what's directly in front of them at that moment. Very short sighted. Does nobody in the PI plan anything? Regarding what you said about Filipinas never admitting they're wrong and trying to save face - In the long term, that just makes them look worse instead of admitting a mistake in the moment, owning up to what you did like a responsible adult should, and then moving past it. They're only thinking about how they can make themselves look better 'right now,' rather than what will improve their reputation in the future. EDIT: Upon further watching of the video, I see you touched on this topic, but it still baffles me.

My fiancee is a little jealous at times. We were on a short holiday at Boracay Island and we were on one of the small buses. We were the only passengers, but a group of 5 or 6 pretty young women got on the bus. I could tell she got tense, but i put my arm around her shoulder and she immediately relaxed. We never said anything, but from that time i sensed a change in her. She now knows my love is just for her. Sometimes its the simple acts of human connection that are so important. One of the reasons I look forward to your videos are your acts of large and small compassion.

As a retired professor in bioethics and married American expat living in Davao as a permanent resident, I know your gift will provide benefits not yet imagined. My prayers are with your friend for a successful completion of her college education. Let me add a few comments about the first part of your video. Many of the characteristics you covered are positive and good, and they are exactly the reason why I am married to my fabulous Filipina wife. Fortunately, she has little or none of the negative characteristics you mentioned like tampo and being unable to accept responsibility when she messes up. She is more mature and self-confident in these instances than the Filipinas you described. That's why she is the queen of my mountain and the only one on the mountain. Filipinas need to discard the bad and improve on the negative to catch a Western man. (Obviously, men need to do the same to catch a good Filipina.) If I didn't live in Davao, I would like to talk with you on a video to provide a Western man's response to the good and the not-so-good of Filipinas. Keep up your great videos. Jim

I also had to work my way through college... I know how hard it is. I helped a former Filipina girl friend prepare for her national board certification and pass. A relationship with a Filipino becomes a blending of cultures with compromises creating a beautiful life together. Filipino women like us men back home are told we are not good enough creating insecurities within. Understand cultural differences can sometimes causes unwanted friction. As a man a woman's place is under your wing and never under your boot. Women in general wants to work with her man having happy life together. I have found most problems you face are trivial compared to back home. Foreign relationships is about love and understanding one another working through any problems together.
