Despite being from Gen 1 myself, I'm not a Genwunner. I actually like several of the newer Pokemon, heck, my favorite Fire-type is Infernape. I'd say I'm a Lifelong Pokemon Fan too. I fell in love with the Franchise as a kid, back when Red & Blue came out, watched the Anime, even collected the Trading Cards, and I have remained a Pokemon Fan well into my thirties. I can even name every single Pokemon as well as their types, their Generation and even which types are good/weak or immune to each other simply by looking at it.

I'm a casual fan that catches pokemon based on aesthetics. Some pokemon have a few natures or gender in my head that fits them the best, so I try to catch those ones. Though the nature aspect is usually limited to a smaller pool of my favorites. I also tend to build in a bit more of a story with the teams I make, similar to how some Nuzlockers do for their playthroughs.

I am too a Casual player but there are 6 types/kinds of Pokemon I always build my team Fire/Water Starter (I really don't choose grass except if its treecko) Electric Pokemon Flying Type Pokemon ( I mostly choose Regional birds) Dark,Ghost or Fighting type And Pokemon that is Ground or Steel Or a pseudo legendary dragon type I mostly try to make my team out of these typing but it can change if I choose grass type and also according to availability of pokemon

A bit of a tip if you are very new: don’t treat type matchups like Rock Paper Scissors. Treat it like chess. Try to think of what your opponent is gonna do to you, then play around that prediction. It is very easy to abuse the AI. An example is to put a water type Pokémon out against an electric type to bait out an electric type move, then switch into a ground type to nullify it. This is very good for draining PP, or if one of your mons has intimidate, then you can just lower their attack to the point that they have no chance of ever killing you. Another tip: This one is a little more on the “nerd” side, but it’s to calculate critical hit damage in your head. I recent games, a critical hit deals 1.5x damage. What you can do is to “play around” crits. Very useful. But if you aren’t new, I hope someone that is sees this and takes something good from it.

I’m a casual player who still uses the 10 year old’s laws of Pokémon: 1. Status moves suck, use the one that does the most damage or looks the coolest. 2. Fairy type are useless 3. Badass look = High damage 4. Evolve everything immediately 5. EVs? IVs? Who needs that? 6. If a Pokémon needs certain conditions to evolve, it’s not worth your time.
