In the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game, you had to get a babel fish out of a vending machine. When you pressed the the button on the machine the fish would fly out of it and get lost where you couldn't get to it. You basically had to set up a Rube Goldberg machine around the room to get ahold of it. And on top of that, it would be be very easy to set up the correct stuff around the room and when you got it right the machine would be out of fish (locking you out of victory, forcing you to reload a saved game).

While you did mention 'getting the Babel fish' from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you could have at least given an honourable mention to any game that involved Douglas Adams. Both the HHGTTG game and his collaboration with Terry Jones of Monty Python fame - Starship Titanic both have some rather ridiculous puzzles to solve.

That Monkey Wrench puzzle was some bizarre, albeit clever, video game logic. However, I'd argue figuring out Monkey Kombat in the 4th Monkey Island game is equally confounding!

One game that never gets any Love on puzzle lists is Full Throttle, that game was a pain in the ass when it first came out in the 90's, and even the remaster had me stumped a few times again for a few hours.

Every puzzle in Overblood was pretty hard. Not cos they were hard but because of how the game handled. First puzzle: Freezing room, you're slowly dying. Nothing you check works. Solution? CROUCH and check things. Later on, you pick up liquid nitrogen but the lift you use is shakey and needs oiling. Oil? Crouch and check on of the boxes. Again, none of this is mentioned, there's no glint or hint and you NEED to crouch. Broken bridge? Well, see that tiny bit left over there? Jump. No, seriously, jump, JUST land on it, then HOLD FORWARD AND X to grab the ledge as that bit falls. Massive tidal wave coming to kill you? Just jump directly up. No, that's not a light above your head, it's the exit. But you wouldn't know that cos you don't have time to look up and can't see it's an opening from before the wave comes. And the lack of glint? You have about 5 enemies to kill in game, which use ammo, ammo and health packs you need to find, alone, with no glint, and running out of ammo means death basically. I'm just saying, there's a reason it lets you save anywhere at any time.

The Monkey's Island puzzle was even more puzzling in international versions. As an example, in Italy the name of the tool needed is not even close to containing "monkey" in its name, a rough translation from italian to english would be something like "english key" or maybe "english wrench", so no way for the unlucky italian translators to have a working pun any way connected to the solution and for the average italian player to guess it.
@Just4Fun-Zocker
@Just4Fun-Zocker 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, whenever the solution to a puzzle, or maybe a code, is a pun, it's usually lost in translation to other languages and therefore makes even less sense in those versions.

I remember renting The Adventures Of Alundra way back in the late 90s and getting stuck at the puzzle with some ghosts in a crypt. I managed to solve it eventually, but years later I learned that a lot of people got stuck here and searched for the solution online, because they couldn't figure it out.

You should include the timed water puzzle from Onimusha: Warlords in one of your puzzle lists at some point. It isn't as much of a brain-bender as it is just flat out annoying. If it's your first time doing it without a quick guide, good luck.

Riddles should be fun and logical to solve. I hate it when developers put obscure and needlessly complicated puzzles into a game just for the sake of it, to pat themselves on the back over how creative and clever they think they are.

Want to know what is funny about the Dark Souls 3 one was? No one ever seems to notice that the message (show your humanity) was probably written by someone who doesn’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re”. When you know this you that they want to see that “you are humanity”, and expects you to prove it. Very clear clue by FromSoft’s standards.

The Braille puzzle for the Regis in Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby. Not sure how most kids were supposed to get that. I’m reasonably intelligent, but pretty much any puzzle in a game is hard for me, so I usually cringe when one comes up.. That said, I can sometimes get the hang of things like the movement puzzles in the Horizon series, which I’m sure are easy for most other gamers. Hey, we all have our strengths and weaknesses.
