I always find it amusing to imagine Leon running around in Resi 4 with a brief case packed with guns and herbs, then buying a slightly bigger briefcase from the merchant and then very carefully unpacking it and putting it in to the new one. Running around with a shotgun in one hand, a briefcase in the other….a bit like Falling Down…… Probably just me but it tickles me.

Oh wait though. I have a good one. The shop that ONLY has the player as its one customer. And it's not just that there's never a queue or any customers in it. You go in one day, there's two swords of sharpness, a codex of smartness and a shield of badassery in stock. You leave, go clean out a dungeon somewhere, come back, and the exact same two swords, codex and shield are there, coupled with whatever you sold to the shopkeep the last time. Also he has the exact same amount of money to buy your stuff as he did the last time (which is something you know exactly, because it's such a good thing for a shopkeeper to declare to every passing wastrel that they have exactly 2,000 gold coin stored in a nice conveniently-raidable location.) Also the shops never go out of business, despite having only one customer for their entire existence. And they never offer you a "regular customer" discount either. B--stards.

My favourite weird way to revive someone is in Payday 2 where you can get a skill that lets you literally shout at your pal to stop bleeding out and get back up, and they just get back up. Also it's strange that in most games you can destroy a security camera and it never raises any suspicions. In Payday a guard will go check out a broken camera if the guy at security calls it in. I wonder why more recent stealth games haven't made cameras somewhat realistic like this.

The character powers one is always my favorite. In Final Fantasy games where the cutscene kills a character or wounds them to the point they can't carry on. They can just cast Raise right? Or Life. Or Cure. Or use a Phoenix Down or potion. Nah man, cutscene.
@Banquet42
@Banquet42 3 жыл бұрын
In FF2 or FF3 (can't remember which) one of the player characters gets killed (a white wizard, another PC's father?) and they do try life, heal and phoenix down but none work as they are all the way dead, not merely mostly dead or knocked out.

I always appreciated how Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 (haven't played Razor's Edge) avoided the 'enemies attacking one at a time' trope. Those guys will fuck your shit up real quick if you're expecting to take on a group one at a time.
@obsessivelyobsessed5263
@obsessivelyobsessed5263 3 жыл бұрын
to be fair to video games on the "1 at a time" trope... in scenarios where swords are involved it's ACTUALLY more dangerous to attack all at once than it is one at a time.... the likelyhood of you carving up your ally are as high as getting a decisive blow on an enemy unless you are well trained as a unit.... but punching and shooting one at a time really is stupid!

I’d love to see a gameplay mechanic that uses a reputation/intimidation system. The longer you play, harder you become, more baddies you kill, the more you reputation increases. NPC’s spread stories of your prowess. People stare in awe at you in towns. And the best bit? Single/weaker enemies will *RUN IN FEAR* from you on sight! They might come back with more friends and bigger guns to take you down, or they might just nope out and reevaluate their life choices.

That women's armor one is pretty... well, ironic. You go to all the effort to point out women specifically, but your examples are Catwoman, a thief for whom heavy, loud armor is a problem, some Mortal Kombat characters where the men and women are of equal levels of "that's not protective", and Shadee, who is almost certainly wearing more metal than the Prince of Persia. There is a legitimate point here, but I think that either it could be rephrased, or given better examples.

It's understandable the silent protagonist in a RPG or a game where you choose his lines because canonically you're talking for him. But in games like Half Life it doesn't make sense because everyone is talking at you and you're just standing silent. That's why I love Portal, at least they addressed that trope in a funny way
@TheRealSephiroth
@TheRealSephiroth 3 жыл бұрын
For locked doors even if you got ammo to take down the door its actually better to save it unless youre in a jam cuz the noise can drae the enemy and one bullet just might make the life or death difference keyword being might depending on the situation. If you got mr x on your tail the bullets will make a difference so id shoot the door cuz hes indestructible and id need a quick getaway if its just a pack of zombies then it will make a difference so dont shoot the door go find the key you can move around zombies or take em out rather easily and since we dont have save rooms all those bullets you got are just for the undead outside mrx or nemesis if you got something indestructible on your tail shoot the door if you got something avoidable dont shoot the door. Also for super powers the reason we dont use them at the slight inconveniences is because that still takes up energy and you dont know whats coming so its best to use little energy to go find a key than to powerhouse through a flimsy gate that may take 3 or 4 good blows. So those two things in the real world actually make sense

Oh, but there's actually a very good reason in the lore of the game for the Doom Slayer to be a silent protagonist. Trauma, trauma, and more trauma from being trapped in Hell fighting monsters for who knows how long led to a pretty bad case of PTSD. Something on the lines of Mad Max at the beginning of Fury Road, only times 1000. :\

IFF systems do exist in real life so it's not *that* much of a stretch to imagine a smart gun that refuses to fire if you're aiming at a friend, although I expect in reality they wouldn't be sufficiently reliable to be useful. Some games force you to lower your weapon when you're facing a friend, and I always take that as the player character refusing to fire on a friend. The game is helping you role play the character you're supposed to be inhabiting. Similarly I take auto-aim as being the game compensating for the fact that you as the player don't have the same skills as the character you're playing, so the game assists you to make up the difference. What's really weird is when the game lets you fire at a friend but then the friend just takes no damage.

"so, how are you today?" "im fine, thank you" *his friend got shot and instantly killed on spot "Gasp!? THAT stealth system in almost all stealth based game just bother me the most lol

I don't mind the nonsensical crafting if it means I don't have to search for the super rare item in a difficult area, or just waste time going to a random spot, purely to make one item. I don't mind silent protagonists if the implication is that they're voiced, it's just not in-game for reasons related to immersion. Idk about Borderlands as it's not the most realistic game out there. But other shooter healing mechanics I do agree on. Inconsistent powers annoys me so much. The greatest example I can always think of is Jack from Mass Effect 2. Galaxy's strongest biotic, right up to the point where she joins the party. Then she's no different from anybody else, besides having the class stats of an Adept.

Healing in video games is generally nonsense. Unless it's fantasy or sci fi and it can be explained by "magic" or "science-magic nanobots", no amount of food, medicine, or bandages is going to make that bullet you just took to the chest. Farcry 3 is the funniest example. Take a bunch of bullets/explosions to the face, and somehow wrapping a bandage around your arm fixes it pretty much instantly.
