Such a cool and helpful video, thanks Marina! 😀 I made most of my experiences traveling by workawaying! My tips for a good experience would be 1) read the profile and the feedbacks well and make sure you know what you're signing up for. E.g. try to find out if the hosts are genuinely interested in a help EXCHANGE or if they actually depend on a workawayer in order to run their business. This way you are more likely to get exploited - but it might still be a great experience of course! 2) don't be too clear about what exactly you want to do and where you want to go - you might miss some great opportunities. Sometimes if you're not looking for a certain place to go but let yourself be found by a host, you might make an experience you wouldn't have dreamed about! 3) When contacting a host, make sure you write a personal message referring to the host's profile. And the other way round: a host that contacts you by a personal message is more likely to actually be interested in you as a person. :)

Yup, great video Marina, but I would recommend everyone takes care with boat crew option. Owners vary, some are plain incompetent. Never mind the small spaces, interpersonal risks and general discomfort, your life could be endangered at sea. It’s also rarely “free” .... it’s often necessary to contribute to food costs. Go well ... always a great watch, your channel! Thank you, Roy

Hi Marina, great video as usual, I have loved them since the Scottish diaries days. Another free accomodation choice are bothies but obviously there are rules & shouldn't really be used for more than a couple of nights, which you alluded to in one of your Scottish diary videos. Keep the videos coming, I am from Co Durham in the UK & I know you have spent some time in the North East of England. Would love to see you back in the Lake District or Scotland again sometime. Wherever you go, stay safe & I look forward to your next video.

Definitely try sailing you would love it. A yacht is way nicer to be in than a van and sailing beats driving any day. Unless you get seasick:-)

JunkBarny I’ve considered this, but it seems that maintenance of a boat is expensive and never ending. I’ve heard it said that owning a boat is like having a hole in the water that you never stop throwing money into 😊
@junkbarny69585 жыл бұрын
johnnste1 Yes there is some truth in that, but you can bring the cost down if you don’t mind doing the work yourself or you can crew on other peoples boats once you get a little experience. Really though how can you put a price on being far offshore and being surrounded by the phosphorescent wake of dolphins, seeing huge whales right by the boat, seeing every star in the sky at night, it’s awesome.

People on Couchsurfing can be extremely rude and judgmental. Most of them are looking for a date or they don't think you are a real solo traveler if you dress a certain way. some are prejudice and assume if you are a person of color you are just looking for a free place to stay. I did Couchsurphing 3 times only had one good experience. One host's roommate tried to kiss me then the host left me a bad review saying I was inappropriate. When I was in Italy this one host just assumed I copied and pasted my messages to him. Saying I didn't read his rules basically saying he only wanted European women to stay with him. Then when I wanted to stay with women to have a better experience and make friends they we're judgmental. The most friendliest people are doing Airbnb and hostels. I have met all kinds of people from different backgrounds that love to travel. Made some really close friends. Couchsurfing is for pretentious travelers or guys looking for a wife.

So sorry this was your experience! There definitely are people on CS that are there for the wrong reasons. Hope you are ok
@kyladanae3 жыл бұрын
@@WildSheGoes thank you I just avoid it now people are rude and judgmental on there. then the people that are willing to host just want to date you.

I applied for workaway... but I'm not having any lucky of any hosts that want me.. I applied to 10 of them already.. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. I wrote a nice profile...put my pictures.. up. I wonder if they think I'm too Old?? (i'm in my late 30'a) .. but I'm in good health.. so it's seems that some hosts are super picky.. which is not fair. but eh, I will keep trying.. but I feel like giving up :/
@WildSheGoes5 жыл бұрын
Hi Misha, make sure your profile is as detailed as possible, lots of good pics and that you send personalized messages to your potential hosts. Eventually you'll find a spot, I know plenty of work away hosts that had volunteers much older than you.

All the options where you have to work are not "free accommodation", yurou just work for your accommodation the same way you'll work for money to rent an accommodation in a normal job and sometimes you are more exploited than with a normal job (au pair for instance). Great video thought but I think the title is incorrect because most of the accomodation you presented are not free.
@WildSheGoes5 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, I'd say it's more of a work exchange for most of those solutions, but I agree, nothing in life is free ;)
