To mee you are the first to say expensive is the opposite of vulgar and not of cheap. So what we concider expesive reflects our set of mind, not our purse. Having this in mind it is easier to make descisions.

Being a fiber artist and seamstress also helps me in my overall look since I can make clothing for myself that fits my body while giving the look I want. The back "pinch" is called darting, a way to create a more fitted look. So my tip is to layer textures: Wool coats have a woven suiting fabric that is structured and feel very stiff and dense (replacing a lining is also a fun way to add in some of your own personal tastes). Softer and more lofty fabrics such as cashmere and angora are great near the skin and more air = more warmth. A softened linen (has gone though many washes) or cotton under garment works to wick moisture and help with air circulation so this is great right on the skin. Silk is a protein and will also keep you warm, so is great near the skin or part of a layered look. My favorite silk fabric for cooler weather is silk noil (made with short fibers not long). It looks and acts like cotton or hemp but helps hold heat better.

I really love your little illustration showing the lines of the outfits (you did this in previous videos, too). I never thought about "more structure" = more expensive looking. But when I compare how I feel in a tailored coat versus a handknitted woolen cape (I love both!), it makes so much sense.

For the first point: when I was 16 I bought a long black wool coat at H&M on Boxing Day. (December 26 here in Canada is often spent shopping for good deals; stores take that day to clear out old inventory). It was from a previous year's collection and it was the last one in stock -- I got it 80% off. I'm 30 now and it's still my go-to winter coat. The wool has moulded to my body shape and I still get compliments on it! I just change the buttons every few years to keep it in style. And I might have a tailor replace the cheap lining with something more warm and durable.

I have to add a comment here... There are lovely options of very good quality clothes on second hand market, so you don't have to spend so much money on good quality clothes... It's worth buying, but there are other ways... And its better for the planet!!

Absolutely!! Some of the best deals I’ve found were second hand
@Waffletoasters2 ай бұрын
Agreed, 20-30 years ago you didn't have the kind of second-hand stores that you have now, these days you have a lot of high-brand second-hand clothing stores. I bought a lot of expensive clothing there over the years: Jimmy Choo bags, expensive suede boots, lots and lots of coats. They are as expensive as the new clothes from a cheap store, but often last much longer because the quality is often still extremely good! I always look up stores like these because they're interesting to shop in, you never know what you get since the contents switch up so often. But there are also a lot of fake stores that just say "vintage" and don't sell anything from the expensive brands.

Totally agree, especially for classic organic fabric pieces. I’ve found many pure cotton, silk, linen and cashmere pieces at way cheaper prices than buying full price. One day I found 4 cashmere sweaters for under $10 each at a thrift store. Any one of them would have been easily close to $100 at a department store.

I was wondering if you might be able to do a video on how to look classy in dresses - I've noticed most of your tips are based around pants, and that is wonderful 98% of the time, but sometimes I want to look classy and put together in a dress! What styles are best? How do you accessorize them without going overboard? What about proportions? I'd also love to see a video about how to look classy and elegant in the wintertime when it's cold. This video is perfection! Especially the statement, "looking expensive is the opposite of looking vulgar." So many people seem to think they need big labels on everything as if they must PROVE to everyone that they are classy or special because they spent $$$ on a certain bag... (Or did they? Nowadays, I think most people assume it's a knock-off.) Can I spend it on a certain bag? Yes, but I can also just buy a quiet beautiful unique Italian oxblood leather and be happy with it. I really appreciated all the information in this video. It is everything! Merci beaucoup!

I agree wholeheartedly with your love of wool. However, it’s usually just too itch-producing for me… except merino wool, usually. I do like a cotton sweater, but it doesn’t have the richness of wool. Lately, I’ve bought sweaters made of cotton and modal (natural) with a bit of polyester or acrylic or even wool thrown in. Very comfy, but not as long-lived as wool. I find that wool coats need to be at least 70% wool to be good quality. I have to wear a scarf to protect against itchiness, though. Regarding “earthy” tones. All one has to do is look at “seasonal” colour charts and find the earthy shades that complement one’s colouring. No biggie. Although this could be a good topic for a future video? Thank you very much for your wonderful videos!

@nataliawalczak674Ай бұрын
In Europe, and especially in countries like France or Belgium (where I live) big sales can only happen twice per year. The periods are announced in media, and there are always news pieces talking about 'how sales are going this year' :D. Then you have some smaller sales here and there, but I believe that there are certain regulations that limit when and how much discounts a shop can give. It is silly in my opinion, mais voilà, c'est comme ça madame! (as the francophones like to say)

I use my own shampoo or shower gel for wool and silk. If it works for my human hair, it wil work for other animal hair... And i wash them by hand. wool does not like much friction so i just solve the shampoo in warm water, soak the sweater, let it sit there for a couple of hours, or over nihgt. then do some handwash and rinse with clean water until it gehts clean. Basically i treat my wool cloths like my hair...

I hated it 🤣🤣as wanted what others my age were wearing . Now looking back at photos I can see how well my clothes hung on me . Through helping him in his shop I gained so much knowledge on how clothes should fit and how to shop for quality vs “trendy “. I miss him and I sure he would be shocked on what the Walmarts of the world offer. My husband also benefited from my fathers talent and had several custom made suits . It is now a dying art .

I wash my cashmere in the washing machine at 20°C. I put the spin at 400, and I put the sweaters inside-out and also inside of a laundry net. Then I never use softener as well. Then I let it dry flat on the drying rack (not hanging) 😊♥️
@TheNousername12 ай бұрын
I wash my wool sweaters or cardigans by hand. As most of my winter wool clothes are quite chunky and heavy, it would take ages to dry or it would be damaged a lot sooner if spin it in washing machine. So to remove as much water from it as possible I do the towel trick. Put the thickest towel on the ground, lay gently squezed but still very wet sweater on top of it nicely and roll towel with the garment together, then just press this roll so the towel absorbs most of the water. I think it helps a lot.

The tips are good but I would add creativity and personal approach, otherwise your look will be artless, unless you can afford the best designers. As far as colors, if you get the magic of mixing different subtle hues, you can go from boring to luxe. All and all, there is no formula to looking “expensive”. Being authentic in your way of dressing can also take you from limited or trying too hard, to unique and wonderful. Even between different cultures, the approach can vary (example: French vs Italian, Japanese vs Brazilian). What it counts is the sense of aesthetics, elegance and authenticity.

Silk, wool, leather, gifted rings by grandmas - I agree, this is how you look expensive. But definitely not on a budget. 500 Dollars or even 300 for one coat and another 200 for ONE pair of loafers is not on a budget, sorry, just isn't for most of us. Might be for Kate Middleton, though, but not sure about that either.

I love this video, the tips are great. I don't love the phrase "look expensive" or "an expensive woman" though, because objects are expensive not people. Women are often treated like objects whose value depends on their physical appearance. So the phrase, which taps into this idea, is quite icky.

You can absolutely look expensive with color fabric and with shiny fabric like silk, velvet, leather and even with satin. Don’t forget that not everyone can wear color or shiny fabric.

Vegan leather will not last as long as full grain leather, I owned a full grain leather bag that lasted me for a decade and still counting! The vegan leather (mostly PU leather) doesn't even last close to 3 years. There are several suggestions for a more environmental friendly option, which are to purchase either a preloved leather bag or to buy a LWG certified leather product. There have yet to be any evidence to show the durability of a vegan leather is better than real leather.

Trench coat does not fit me as well as other women with the same body type like me. It makes you look a quarter back in football
