What’s your take on using a template for a portfolio? At least as a starter for those of us that have lackluster design skills.

Good tips. I'll add one: 11. If you're a frontend dev or backend dev but not a UI designer, don't feel like you need to design your portfolio yourself from scratch. It will end up looking amateur, naturally. I see it all the time during my live design reviews. You can be great at coding frontend and translating mockups, but you can be horrible at designing UI's. If this is the case, ideally, pay a UI designer to create one from scratch or just use a well designed template -- until you can improve your UI design skills.

DesignCourse yes, definitely. One thing I wish I mentioned is the use of existing templates/themes.

I for one know I suck at design right now. I can recognize good design, but coming up with it myself is not something I can do yet. Would you say that using a template while progressing through something like FreeCodeCamp is ok? At least for the portfolio site? Or would you just do those yourself, but use a template for the portfolio you plan to put onto the web?

@@lardosian Sure, I had to take a technical call where I had to talk to a senior developer who asked me questions about JS6, React, React Lifecycle and some code questions, e.g Why const x =1 is inmutable while const x ={ val: 1 } is mutable in x.val. After that I had another technical interview with some more new questions about JS6. To be sincere, I studied how to create a full todo app from scratch using react and redux, but they only asked about JS6 fundamentals and some React concepts, so it went very smooth. However I would have failed completely without Brad's teachings through his courses and youtube videos.

1. Presentable Design/UI (for your portfolio website). 2. Good Hosting and (Custom) Domain (no heroku-hosted, no free-hosting). 3. Keep It Simple (by showing only the most important stuff: e.g. showcase, projects, contact, about pages). 4. Don't Exaggerate Skills (by stating skills that you don't know, or know only the basics about them). 5. Live Examples/Demos. 6. Be Selective with Projects (that you show on your portfolio). 7. Customize Course Projects (instead of just listing them as your own while in fact they are made by your tutors). 8. Easy Contact. 9. Web Presence and Brand (yourself on line). 10. Be Yourself.

Good video, the industry loves to add stuff it doesn't need. I've done it myself. I think it's sort of a trait of being a passionate programmer. Or maybe just a bad one? In any case, I know I've added complications to my projects in the past by dragging in some new hot thing that didn't work out half as well as planned.
