I like how Yorknew ends so abruptly. It makes it feel like a Coen brothers movie. It didn’t end in a big massive final battle because it wouldn’t make sense for the characters to do that and the author didn’t want to force it just for the sake of having a big fight. It takes a lot of confidence in your writing to do that and Togashi’s is totally earned.

How I took Gon's reaction to Ging's message was a bit different. I was convinced at this point that Gon cares less about finding Ging to have him as a father figure as initially expected. Gon seems to care about doing what Ging did. Going through the same experiences and walking down a similar path to find out what's so great about it. But also, his naivete says that those experiences MUST be great. Great enough to leave your own child for. I don't think Gon holds any ill will toward Ging, but the idea of finding out what's so great about said path gets him excited and he wants to experience it too. Because he knows deep down, that under normal circumstances, a parent wouldn't just leave like that. This is how I took Gon's reaction to Ging's message. "He says I should enjoy the game" and doesn't he do everything in his power to do just that?

As a person that too doesn't know his father, this is the answer. I've always understood Gon like that, at his age (and with the maturity that he shows) he doesn't need nor wants a paternal figure, he just wants to know what Ging did, and why he did it. So after receiving that message, that he should enjoy the game, he takes it to his heart, and as we see through the whole arc, he does.

not according to Hisoka, I see him mostly as a Manipulator, here is the Hisoka divination by the way 1- Enhancers are determined and simple. Most of them never lie, hide nothing, and are very straightforward in their actions or in their thinking. Their words and actions are often dominated by their feelings. They are generally very selfish and focused on their goals. This is reflected in their Nen as enhancers typically rely on simple and uncomplicated Hatsu techniques. 2- Transmuters are whimsical and prone to deceit. Transmutation users have unique attitudes, and many are regarded as weirdos or tricksters. Often they put forth a facade while hiding the truer aspects of their personalities. Even when they don't hide their personalities they rarely reveal their true intentions. Many Transmuters rely on techniques that give unique and unpredictable properties to their Nen that reflects their personalities. 3- Emitters are impatient, not detail-oriented, and quick to react in a volatile manner. Many of them are quick-tempered and hot-blooded. They resemble the Enhancers in building their impulsivity, but the difference with them, they probably tend to calm down and forget easier. Because of the nature of Emission, many Hatsu techniques created by emitters are primarily long range. 4- Conjurers are typically high-strung or overly serious and stoic. They are often on guard as to be cautious. They are very observant and logical, rarely falling into traps. Being able to analyze things calmly is the strength of Conjurers. Many of the items that conjurers create are often used by them in a very deliberate and practical, logical fashion. 5- Manipulators are logical people who advance at their own pace. They are all for arguments and tend to want to keep their families and loved ones safe. On the other hand, when it comes to pursuing their own goals, they do not listen to what others might have to say about it. While manipulators often use techniques that allow them to control their opponents they also prefer to use an inanimate medium to control that can be used versatility (such as smoke or pieces of paper hardened with Shu). 6- Specialists are individualistic and charismatic. They won't tell you anything important on them, and refrain from being close friends, but, because of their natural charisma that draws others, they are always surrounded by many people. Because Specialization is unique and can have many facets, most Specialists possess only one Hatsu technique.

I 100% get why you wouldn't like the game and the rules BUT I love card games, and the way this arc went about explaining the rules and mechanics of the island I absolutely loved. This was my favorite arc because it didn't stray from the rules of its universe and explored the different ways to win and lose and of course ways to manipulate the game. Adding Biscuit on top of it all was just the swole old lady cherry on top

Honestly mate, it feels a bit like you're reading too much into Gon's relationship with Jing and projecting some personal bias into how you think Gon feels about Jing. Jing is a person that makes things and does things he thinks are cool, then wants to share them with people. Gon is curious about who Jing is and why his adventures are so important to him; he's not looking to be accepted by Jing or be "enough" for him. The core of the message from Jing is simply "Hey Gon, You're here because you were curious about who I am. This is a game I made with my close friends and put a lot of love in to. If you want to know about me as a person, enjoy this thing I made to the fullest! This is who I am." And Gon goes "Neat! I'll have fun with the game then." Simple as that. Also, the players in this game aren't stuck there, yet you make it sound like they HAVE to win in order to escape, making winning the primary goal for that group, but that's not the case. They can leave at any time, either with a card or by boat, they just want the money reward for completing it. Their goal isn't to play and enjoy the game, it's to min-max the system so they can get it over with as soon as possible, and Gon's not interested in speedrunning on a first playthrough.

@lu55133 жыл бұрын
Can't agree more, the projecting is kinda hard to watch especially to those who have finished the Manga, and the fact the players can leave anytime they want is quite essential to the review as well, missing that caused mark misunderstood it as a SAO situation, but I guess he will realize that in the next part of the arc.

Glad you addressed the critique regarding how abrupt and in some parts surface level the Yorknew review was... I was especially confused why you left out a scene as important as Phinks & Feitan explaining why the Phantom troupe can't kill Kurapika nor his friends which is very important cause.. yeah the Spider would've otherwise indeed sought and killed them. That scene also explained about post-mortem nen which is a really interesting side to it! All in all Phinks thanking Gon after knowing what they did for Paku was one of the best moments for me in Yorknew personally since it further shows that the Phantom Troupe members are still human and not some evil characters for the sake of being evil. I recommend talking a bit more about nen, characters and how they tie to the story as a whole since that's what makes HxH so amazing, that's what the fans love it for! And it might be good to take your time with the reviews especially when the Chimera Ant arc draws near.. It's best not to rush it cause the story telling in HxH is very deep.

I disagree with you about Gon’s denial about his relationship with his father. To me it’s pretty clear that the point of his search for Ging from the beginning is the used symbolically. Gon was born to be a hunter, that’s why his potential is so great. He’s naturally curious, good with animals and he couldn’t fight the urge to hunt something, the catalyst being his father. So when Ging says to enjoy the game, that’s the part he fixated on because that’s what he wanted to do anyway, to continue to enjoy the journey he’s on. So his reaction to thing happening to ppl around him is sort of redundant to him, because he wants to play the game and enjoy as it was intended.
@MrM98193 жыл бұрын
Facts, thank you !
@john32603 жыл бұрын
I actually think Gon is in denial of the trauma caused by his father leaving. We see that he didn't become a hunter or powerful to see his father. He became driven because he wanted to prove to himself worthy of seeing his father. He subconciously thought his father abandoned him because he isn't as worthy of attention or of dignity compard to his father's job (i.e., being a Hunter). The trauma's impact caused by abandonment can be seen in Gon's relationships, such as his willingness to sacrifice himself during the Yorknew City Arc because he treasured Killua but gave no shit about his life, since he (in Gon's eyes) wasn't worthy of being loved, cared for, and attended to. Ironically, Gon is more analogous to Killua than he realised.
@leothelion25933 жыл бұрын
@@john3260 I think that’s somewhat of a reach, but I can understand how you came to that. For me, it’s made pretty clear from the first chapter that Gon had an eye for adventure from the beginning. He never judged Ging, instead I think apart of Gon admires Ging, and his search for him was to understand and in turn experience whatever it is that lead Ging to making the decision to leave him behind. His willingness to sacrifice himself in certain situations doesn’t necessarily always call back to Ging, rather the thing that Gon treasures more than anything is his friends. Shown in his retrieval of Killua, how he didn’t want Kurapika to kill, and finally his willingness to sacrifice everything because of his own guilt over losing Kite. Speaking of Gon clearly sees Kite as being a father figure to him, much more than Ging even. When faced with the realization that Kite was “dead” he blamed himself, he was fully aware that his preceding actions would mean that he would never meet Ging. He accepted that, just so he could get the catharsis of destroying the thing that killed his friend/father figure.

That's pretty much how I always viewed it: Ging is a weirdo, and Gon just "gets" him. But Mark's alternate analysis is very interesting. It all comes down to one of the manga's first statements about Gon's father: Mito: "Why do you want to find your father? He abandonned you to become a Hunter." Gon: "Yup. Isn't that incredible? Being a Hunter must be so awesome for my dad to have made such a choice!" Is this denial about an abusive father, or is this wide eyed wonder towards the perspective of adventure? Maybe both? (IMO, the succession war arc kinda makes it clear it was always option two, but the fact that the two levels of reading coexist is super interesting)
@zappandy3 жыл бұрын
1. Give it a watch. It'd be a shame that you are spoiled on some very important character moments. It's an outstanding series. 2. Gin is a terrible dad and person, but so far with a neat characterization. I think that is why Gon in some ways is in denial, or at least was back in this arc. The more we see of Gin as well as how other characters feel about him, the more we realize he's even more uncaring and selfish than expected. He does anything for the sake of adventure, even abandoning his own son. This also works on the flip side, like paying people insurmountable amounts of money. Gon being the somewhat sweet kid that he is, does eventually reframe his relationship with him in a healthier way. Personally, I think the kid just wants closure by meeting this dude and eventually pursuing his own personal goals.

sorry mark at 14:20 i disagree. You said SAO gamify anime, while HxH animfies a game. In technicality both series are anime however the greed island arc as you mentioned has its own rules and abilities and mechanics. Its a game with its own world ecosystem and meta. SAO does none of this. You can say HxH gamifys itself whereas SAO attempts to convince the audience that the setting is a gameworld ( by slapping down a health bar and item menu) when in actuality its just another fantasy world.
