So I've been busy learning about Oud / Agarwood / Aloeswood..
The whole process around it, and understanding the complexities of the oils. Here is a look at 3 of the oils offered by Ensar.
They source only the highest caliber agarwood possible, and work with expert local distillers closely through the whole process, to create high quality artisanal oud oils.. that some believe are among the best quality in the world. - All though prices are high, this is high grade 100% pure oud oil, from rare endangered trees, expertly distilled. With the oil aged for many years.
But you can get a small 0.3g sample for as little as $27. which isn't too bad just to experience it.

Peter, Thank you for the excellent and in depth review! Bravo! Great job with Sultan Leather Attar too, with 32 different ingredients harmonizing within, to pick up on individual notes isn't easy, although you're spot on with oakmoss =) Keep up the good work!

So glad to see you experiencing these oils! They're truly amazing, how complex & multi faceted these single ingredient oils can be. After smelling true oud oil, it makes it easy to identify the synthetic ouds that most designer & niche fragrances use. They smell nothing alike. It's a shame, as I think most people will form an opinion on what they think oud is from smelling a synthetic ingredient that barely resembles the real thing. My personal favorites are Borneo & Thai oils. Cheers!

Hi Pete, this video has just increased my respect for your passion towards true perfumery tenfold.A lot of YT reviewers think they know oud and describe it with the same generic words like 'barnyard', 'medicinal' but often never try the pure oud oil on its own to recognise it has many facets. They fail to recognise that more often than not what they smell is not even the real thing due to its scarcity and price but an oud like aroma created in the lab.Good on you pal for going out your way to increase your knowledge and experience with perfumery.I wish you all the best in your olfactory journey!!!!

Hey Peter. I'm thourougly enjoying these oud series of yours. From what I know petrichor actually emerges after the rain, not before and it is a result of bacteria being settled within the soil for a dry period of time. The smelll is released when the water hits the soil and the bacteria rapidly sythesize the water, quenching after the dry wait, which then release this beautiful smell as a result. I might be wrong but I have always been fascinated with the smell of petrichor and wanted to find out how exactly it comes from. Thought maybe you might be interested in what more information available on this particular wonder of nature. It is these kinds of things which make the life more bearable on this tiny blue dot, and help me call it home. Thank you for sharing your insights on oud. As always, you're doing wonderful and I'm looking forward meeting fruits of your passionate labor. I hope you are doing great. Cheers, brother 😊

Great video.. I recently been getting into oud.. Found out that most of the popular "oud" perfumes actually have very little, or no real oud in them.. Also, you can buy real oud oil for as little as $50 for about 50ml as well as oil that costs $500 (and up) per gram.. So the world of oud is very confusing and complex indeed. Most people think it's supposed to smell skanky and fecal, so they stay away from it. Real aged, oud, extracted with loving care, is amazing. It's natures own perfume that takes you on a wonderful scent trip.

So Winterbird brings up a really good point. There is such a thing as 'sweet' Hindi oud. Hindi oud as you know is renown for it's 'barnyard' profile. This however is do to the over soaking, and fermenting of the oud, causing some funky notes to develop. If however an artist decides to skip the soaking process sweet hindi ouds like Oud Yoshi are produced, and are absolutely breathtaking!

You're most welcome Winterbird =) Just a word of caution, there are a lot of 'oudhs' out there including the wood that are synthetic or have been otherwise adulterated by either being soaked in oil or polished. To inhale or otherwise absorb (through the skin) is not especially good for one's health so it's best to stick with the natural verified unadulterated oud wood. Any waxy looking wood, or dark uniformly black oud is a sign that it has been altered. I also recommend using an electric heater over charcoal as there is usually saltpeter within the charcoal which you're inhaling along with the fragrant smoke. With adjustable electric heaters you get all the aroma without the smoke =) As you know, under our wood and resin category we've got 10 grams for as little as $79. And with it I'll be sure to include a few free samples of some of our oud oils. Thanks so much Winterbird, ~Adam

You said it very well in the video, it's truly an experience rather than just a scent, as not only are there notes, but there are feelings which they evoke, memories which they play on, and unique perspectives which each individual approaches a scent. Oud also interacts with individuals skin chemistry differently so each individual even with the same oud has their own personal 'scent print.'

I have a few from Ensar, a beautiful attar called Hajar Aswad that has oud and rose oils, Oud Yusuf (which is very good but it's my least favorite, bit flat compared to wilder better ouds but I like it because it reminds me of a visit to Damascus when I was younger), Assam Organic (cultivated organically from Assam in India- beautiful after it develops, only the opening smells a bit like al-Khat), Oud Suleiman (which is also from the region of Assam in India but it's harvested wild oud rather than cultivated) it's basically a much much better version of Assam organic and I can only compare it to a day in heaven with rain showers of honey, though it starts out smelling like a moldy book in a rotten bookcase in a dusty musty abandoned underground dungeon, which is not bad either it's a fairytale condensed into oil.

Not sure not experienced those different variety of Birch... Orris Givco smells like thick powder, not like lipstick.. I think the lipstick note is more an accord created with different Ianones / Iris notes and violet notes, there's no specific synthetic I've smelled that gives a full impression of lipstick like Dior Homme has..

Do you know if Creed Royal Oud uses actual Oud, or a synthetic?
@FragranceView
@FragranceView 6 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I smelled Royal Oud... it's not my taste, I am honestly not sure. From memory, it didn't smell of the synthetic ouds I have.. but it could be an oud accord built up of other natural components. Or they could use a small amount of real oud, they don't specify on the website where the oud is from... the trouble with a house like Creed is they sell so much stock world wide, it would be difficult to use real oud in such volume... so it wouldn't surprise me if there's no actual oud in there. But then again, maybe! They would need a steady reliable source from a cultivated farm, there's no way they could do it with wild oud, there's not enough of it, and it's too expensive. So my guess is if it's from a farm, they would need so much I don't think a farm in Asia could keep up without injecting the trees, and inducing oil production in young trees... so it would be a low grade poor quality oud ( using logical arguments here ) - with that in to consideration, it seems unlikely to me they would go for real. It's more than likely an oud accord created to give an impression of it.

How does Ensar Oud compare to ouds that aren't as easily available in the West? I am assuming that when you go to Dubai for work you have the opportunity to purchase ouds that aren't as readily available online.

I smelled some oud oils in Dubai, they smelled like mixed oils to me... even though they promised they were natural and not mixed, I don't trust them here to be honest.

Interesting. Do you not trust them to not rip you off because you are not a local? I'm assuming that the locals have some way to get good quality ouds because it is such an important part of their culture. But I could be wrong.

basically yes, I am sure if you know the right people it's fine... but the good stuff usually is kept hidden, and they will sell tourists the cheap fake stuff.

He mentions several times these oils last 7 hours then fade away on his skin. I've watched many youtube videos and read many more reviews and there are people who are saying they get Oud that last 24 hrs. I have Tom Ford Eau De Parfum, all Ford's Ouds and Intense Ouds that are lasting 12-14 hrs. on my skin. I am awaiting arrival of my first sample pack of Oud oil. The 7 hour lasting review by this young man worry me a bit, especially for the prices. Can someone with Oud knowledge reply, would this be his chemistry or the Oud oil itself only lasting 7 hours? I've watched the Arabian Oil videos and some, one in Dubai claims after showering some of their oils can still be smelled. Adam from Ensar, can you help here or any other person with Oud knowledge. Thanks.

You think Tom Ford uses real Oud? Not a chance.. it lasts that long m because it’s synthetic, longevity doesn’t equal quality....why does anyone need more than 7 hours anyway? I don’t get that logic. Every oil distillation is different from real Oud, so longevity will change with every oil.. only synthetic is reliably the same every time

Money brings bad side of humans out. I’m not a tree hugger but learning that trees or animals being purposely exploited for our luxury kinda throws me off. I’m not a fan of oud but I was thinking of diving into the world of oud seriously But not sure anymore. People who love oud, I’m not going to tell them not to but I can be one less customer in oud market. Thanks Peter for detailed information about oud. You are very thorough with any topic you touch. I’ll wait for the next topic you talk about in detail : } ✌️

its a seriously beautiful ambergris slightly sweetened with florals. Very salty, musky, sweet and and so sexy. Of course that's on paper, will wear properly today

Musky? I hope there's not Cashmeran in it again.. I get too much of that in Harem Rose now I bought it, it's one synthetic that grates on me a bit - love ambergris though

I'm not familiar with how much 0.3g looks like. Those look like decent sized samples. I will grab the samples in the future after I've learned about different types of real ambergris. Maybe it's something that would interest you?
@FragranceView
@FragranceView 6 жыл бұрын
do you have Instagram? take a look at Nikhilsfrags - he has a photo showing both 0.3gram vials, and full 3ml vial.. mine is way less than 0.3, mine is just a tiny dab... give you an accurate idea! I know there's different grades of Ambergris, I am not sure on the variety of the scent they give though! it would be interesting to find out though
@davidmidecem
@davidmidecem 6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView I'll check my instagram! 0.3g seems like the smallest size they sell. Ambergris is very interesting, although doesn't have as many varieties as oud because there's no way to farm it.
@FragranceView

yeah I asked for just a tiny dab to get the essence so I could source which ones I want to purchase in bigger quantity to use in my perfume blending, so mine isn't 0.3g.. but the smallest they offer is that, it's quite a few drops though, you'd get a few uses from that size

I haven't yet tried real oud oil, but thus far in my fragrance journey, I cannot abide fragrances with oud unless it's in there as a VERY subtle note...For some reason, I keep getting a sharp, pungent aroma, unfortunately! Such a shame as I usually love wood notes.
@FragranceView

synthetic ouds are quite unpleasant.. real oud is far more beautiful and complex, hopefully you can try real quality oud one day, to see the difference

I find it very sad that they have to induce infection. Its why the trees are becoming instinct and oud is becoming rare. Eventually there may not be wild aqilarius tress left. Its extinct in some countries. Its the only thing I hate about this. For the sake of wanting a perfume to smell nice. I love artisan perfumery but I would rather use oud synthetic. Not the same I know. Destroying trees deliberately makes me sad. But well done on this video. Very informative.
@FragranceView
@FragranceView 6 жыл бұрын
The good thing about farming it well, is that they carve out the oud, and then let the tree heal it's self.. then the tree is healthy again, while they harvest other trees.. rather than letting it get fully infected and chopping the whole tree down. They're managed to keep the trees on good farms. When it comes to Wild trees, if the tree is already going to die, I don't see the harm in taking the oud.. I have a few synthetic ouds and they don't smell at all like oud, and they don't change, singular notes.. I'd rather source oud from someone that collects the responsible way
@wyomingpark
@wyomingpark 6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView yes good farming practices is good. But its only really in recent years they are realising the trees are disappearing and scrambling to save the trees. Hats off to the farmers who allow the trees to heal. I know synthetic oud is not the same. Nonetheless its still a nice woody aroma. Black agar by Givco is nice.
@FragranceView
@FragranceView 6 жыл бұрын
Black Agar smells the least like Oud, it smells like sweet sticky resin and tobacco to me, Givaudan fell short with that one.. I think real oud has such complex nuances that they can't create an accurate replacement for it... plus the amount of variety with the odour profile between geographical location, species, and types of distillation.. So they've come up with a generalised commercial impression instead, in my opinion gives completely the wrong impression of Oud... Then we get designer perfumers and cheap Indie brands labelling " oud " on the label and not breakdown, using stuff like this, and thinking that's what Oud is.
@wyomingpark
@wyomingpark 6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView yeah I get it. Real oud is different. I havent smelled all the synth ouds out there. I suppose all noses smell things differently too. I appreciate the fact that real oud is unique. We have a company in Australia that owns farms in Vietnam and their oud samples are really cheap. You might like to check it out. I ll find the link.
