On April 4, 2024, something out of the ordinary unfolded in Duluth, capturing my attention and I knew it was a moment that had to be shared with all of you, my Boat Friends. Witnessing the majestic 1000-ft Indiana Harbor requiring the assistance of not just one, but two stalwart tugboats, the Missouri and the North Carolina, was a sight to behold. This was no everyday occurrence; it was a moment fraught with questions and shrouded in the mystery of the deep blue - well, in this case, the vast expanses of Lake Superior. These two tugboats actually had to tow and push this huge ship under the Aerial Lift Bridge out onto Lake Superior!
Why, you may ask, would such a vessel, known for its strength and size, need such aid? Could it have been a complication with the bow thrusters, crucial for docking and maneuvering? Or perhaps the rudder, vital for steering, was unresponsive? The possibilities span wide, each more intriguing than the last.
This video isn’t just about capturing a rare event; it’s an invitation to dive into a maritime enigma. I, Vibe, am here to guide you through this nautical narrative the best I can, presenting footage that raises questions and sparks the curiosity that sometimes even provokes the ‘Boat Friends Snowman’ to get involved.
And now, it’s over to you, Boat Friends. What theories do you harbor about this unusual assistance? Is there a mechanical malady we’re not seeing, or is it something more/less? Dive into the comments with your thoughts, insights, or even your own experiences of maritime mysteries.
Let’s remember, the allure of the lake lies not just in its scenic voyages but in the tales untold and mysteries unveiled. Until our next adventure, keep your compass set on curiosity, and like I always say, "I'll be out here with the next vessel."

Captain Chip, it’s clear to me that it is indeed you. While we have not had the opportunity to meet in person, please know that the admiration and respect I, along with countless Boat Friends, hold for you and your crew are immense. Your endeavors throughout the winter, breaking ice for the colossal vessels and providing indispensable assistance as you did for the Indiana Harbor, are nothing short of heroic. To all of us within the Great Lakes shipping community, you are a veritable celebrity. The sound of your voice over the radio, signaling your approach to aid another vessel, resonates with a sense of security and camaraderie. Your unwavering dedication has garnered you an extensive fan base, all of whom share a profound respect for the work you undertake. I am immensely grateful for your precious time spent watching one of the videos and leaving a comment. It is my sincere hope that one day I will have the honor of shaking your hand and expressing my gratitude in person for the incredible service you provide.

Hi there Captain. First, thanks for letting us know the issue with the Indiana Harbor. Just wanted to say I really respect your craft. I've enjoyed watching you for several years now. Your cool, calm, and professional demeanor is always quite noticeable. I hope you comment again in the future. We love having you here. Oh, prior to the Baltimore event, would this situation have required two tugs???

Howdy vibe Mike I have a credible source living there in Duluth that works in the ship community in the habor and he knows what happened to the Indiana harbor boat. the man relayed this to me in his words . “They escorted out since they had some mechanical issues going on, since they did not have a back up operating, maritime rules state that in an enclosed harbor they must have tug assist.”

I was fortunate enough to be visiting Two Harbors, MN Taconite docks on August 27, 2011 and the Indiana Harbor pulled in to load. It was a stunning day on Lake Superior and it was fascinating to watch the precision of the workers handling the ship and loading the taconite! I think the Captain of the ship was taking precautions for some reason as they left on this recent trip out of Duluth. I wish the Captain and crew safe sailing!

From a couple videos that I"ve seen, there is going to be an increase in tug support, going in and out of harbors everywhere. It has become commonplace to dismiss the tugs after getting underway in the channel. All it takes, is for one system to fail, and you're scrambling to correct the issue.

Well, it could have something to do with what happened to the key bridge in Baltimore Maryland, because that vessel was having engine trouble and if it’s been guided by tugboats, it never would’ve ran into the bridge. So that vessel could have had some kind of engine trouble earlier and they didn’t wanna take any chances of the engines dying going towards the bridge.

@@vibewithmike I know it's a safety thing above all. However insurance rates may go up if the ships are not escorted in and a out of ports or canals. Anytime that insurance companies take a hit for big money they raise their rates and put conditions on every policy to hopefully avoid having to pay out a claim. Therefor if you have an accident in a canal or port without being tethered to a tug boat we will not pay your claim. Insurance is a dirty scam,you have to have it. You have to pay what they charge,and they will fight you all the way before paying your claim. Then they will raise your rates to the point you can't have insurance through them ever again. That was the point I was conveying. More hoops to have to jump through in order to run a business.

Like one long and two short. And also what some of the symbols painted on the ships mean. I am thinking they help the tug boats or pilot boats but not sure. I am just an old lady that needs to know these things just in case in my next life I become a sailor. Thank you.

It’s such a pleasure receiving a comment from you. You always say so many positive things. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

The Indy has four main engines, (EMD 20 cylinders each 645 E3B) into a a twin shaft reduction gear to two main shafts with variable pitch propellers. Two engines on the port and two on the starboard. Each engine can be de-clutched as needed. She can also run with just one side only operating but a bit slower. Unless it is a stern bearing issue that requires dry docking after she is unloaded. If it is a steering gear issue that would prompt the escort in the navigation channel. The steering gear is a hydraulic engine to move the rudders and is fairly simple and repairable while underway across Lake Siberia. If she didn't have an escort into the locks and down Detour channel it is probably fixed.

Fantastic question. Those tugs ended up coming back and the ship continued out on the lake. Carl, take a look at the comment at the very top that I pinned to the comment section. One of the Boat Friends found out what happened to the ship.

I believe she picked up additional tug support at the Soo and down the St Mary's river. Once into Lake Huron no tugs. And now she is in northern Lake Michigan moving along without tugs.

could it be the ship lost either bow thrusters or stern thrusters oe both and that is why she need the two tugs i am allways amazed at how powerful these tugs are and how small compared to these great lakes monster lakers and just how skilled the captains are on these tugs one question why are the lakers bows so rounded would it have anything to do with control of them as they push much more water at the bows over the ocean going cargo ships as the all have sharp bows on them would that be one reason for such rounded bows they always remind me of the great sailing war ships like the HMS VICTORY has she has a rounded bow like all of the war ships and cargo ships or her time last love all the videos you make its great to see these majestic lakers go out and into of the harbours could she have lost a prop blade

Fantastic question about the shape of the bow. Great question the 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber. npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/df3bfe2/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6144x4088+0+0/resize/880x586!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Flegacy%2Fsites%2Fwiaa%2Ffiles%2F202103%2Fsoo_locks_-_usace_0.jpg

Question, if they need help to get to the lake , what happens then?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 2 ай бұрын
There’s still a lot of speculation surrounding what happened with the ship. After the ship made it to Lake Superior via tugs it seemed to move on its own power after that. The tugs came back to Duluth. I’m not sure what happened after but I’m guessing we will find out soon.

Might be a reason they’re doing it with the tugs and that’s because they don’t wanna risk the same disaster of what happened in Maryland when the Scott key bridge was destroyed by a ship that lost power

Hi there. If you start watching at the 6:50 mark, you'll easily see exhaust from both stacks. Early on in the video the exhaust was tough to see due to the lack of contrast against the sky. The ship had power....which she quickly used once clearing the canal.
