Our 1000cc BMW powered Trophy Kart is turning out great! In today's episode, we build an exhaust with a muffler, relocate the pedals and integrate the clutch and brake into one pedal (for way more comfort), and we brace the chassis. Then, we take the mini trophy truck for a test ride! This custom UTV is turning out great- but we still have a few bugs to work out. Can't wait to put it up against our cross kart!
Thanks for Watching!

Surely putting the clutch on the shifter handle is the better choice, just a simple motorbike clutch assembly? This Clutch/Break seems such a poor decision, in my opinion, on a performance machine. I personally, along with many other drivers would use engine breaking to keep the vehicle stable in cornering. But you would loose engine breaking in this instance as you depress the clutch, to then be able to use the brakes. Would also cause the engine to drop to idle meaning you would need to be pressing the throttle, clutch and brake at the same time to go around a corner and accelerate out the other side. Love the videos, so I mean this only as constructive criticism.

Not only that, probably what is going to happen is that when they are shifting they are gonna be accidentally pushing the brake to slowing you down when your trying to go fast. riding lawnmowers are not perfomance machines

Yep, lots of dirt track cars use hand clutches. Even a recluse clutch would have been better than what they did. They took away all the fun things about having a clutch. They missed the part where lawn mowers dont have to shift at high speed.

In reality it's a very poor substitute to a foot clutch, because it's awkward. Imagine fighting the wheel while bouncing around and trying to use a hand clutch at the same time. A clutch on the shifter is also rubbish as they found out with the Dukarti.

fun build. also a BMW Kbike guy here. There's definitely a vac leak thats screwing with the idle. Common problem is the crankcase breather tube just to the right of the third intake boot. Could also be the Vac hose going to the fuel pressure regulator, or the little rubber caps on the vac ports by the fuel rail.

Clutch brake combo is a unique idea but I think that it’s a bad one. Engine braking is something you don’t notice until it’s gone. Plus now you will have to rev match when ever you go to brake. Hand clutch would make way more sense. Great work on the exhaust. If nascar can run oval pipes you’ll be fine!

Several concerns: The two 1" hoops you call a roll cage will turn to butter when it rolls. Driveshaft protection? Unless the rear end gets redone anyway then whatever. Radiator lines running right by your foot. See the last cleetus and cars event. Dude is still in serious condition in the hospital because a hose blew behind him. Theres a reason people don't really use those shocks on go karts. The springs are too soft so it sits too low in it's travel, and the damping is way too firm so the suspension can't react fast enough to bumps. Imagine trying to stir really thick paint. It's hard to move the stick. The whole clutch/brake pedal seems silly. Clever, but still silly. What if you want to do a standing burnout? Engine braking? This thing could turn out amazing, but your whole "it'll be fine" mantra is kinda ruining it. Not just from a performance standpoint, but safety too. Last thing I want to see is one of you guys in the hospital because you took too many shortcuts on a project.

Besides the slight problem with the drive train, I have to say that this build is completely bad ass. I'm sure you guys will come up with a set up that functions the way you want it to and knowing you two,it'll be a relatively easy fix. I love this project because it gives you an idea of what someone who has basic fabrication skills should be able to accomplish with basic tools and materials. A project like this is definitely not out of reach for the average person.

im sorry but that brake/clutch idea is terrible. There is a reason people don't use it on performance applications, your ability to quickly and effectively brake will be severely compromised. It will work, but not as good as a traditional lever or separate pedal. p.s. also no burnouts ):

Well, here is a thought for the rear axle problem. Try a Suzuki Samari . Its not too wide, plenty around and should not take too much horse power to turn. Some rear ends are harder to turn than others, something to think about when making your selection. Or tou could make it interesting and use the front axle from a samari, just lock it straight for now, and later on when you have it all figured out you can add rear steering. Now that would be fun. Just a few ideas for you to kick around. Keep up the good work.

*Ovalling the pipe DOES restrict flow!* For a 2" ID that's squished down to 1" tall it is a *30% reduction* based on cross sectional area. Here's how: when squished to 1" the pipe is only gains about 0.8" in width, not the 'expected' full inch. That brings the cross section area down to 2.18 square inches VS 3.14 for a round 2" diameter pipe. Don't worry, i've made that mistake before too since it is somewhat counter-intuitive. That said, the exhaust sounds great! Very smooth compared to straight pipes from before. If you're cutting out a box or a scoop on the plasma, cut it as one piece (think of how a paper template looks that's then folded/glued together) but cut a series of slots where it has to be bent. Once it's cut it will be easy to bent along the slots even without a bender. And no welding since it's all one piece! As for attaching things like scoops, RIVNUTS! You can get a basic kit at Harbor Freight with aluminum rivnuts, or you can get a more powerful tool and some steel rivnuts online.

Hook a relay to the brake light switch to activate the cooling fan during braking coupled with an adjustable temperature fan switch/relay . You have one cool Beemer.

That brake/clutch isn't going to work very well, I guarantee when you go to shift you are going to be applying the brake at the same time, shifting a tractor isn't the same as shifting a car or motorcycle. Mark my words you are going to hate it and you will be changing it

They should just put the clutch on the gear lever kinda like a motorcycle grip clutch. Woulda been easier to fab and safer. I agree with you on the brake clutch combo. Only plus i could see is that it does make a good oh sh!t pedal for those times you just want to shut her down.

I think the issue is that they've realised that they've had to make so many comprises they're just building it to get the content out and move on. No doubt it's fun, but you can hear it in the throttle and gear changes that they hesitate and take an age to get going again.

@carsandcameras : The brake/clutch is a great idea EXCEPT. you push pedal say 1 inch activates clutch, then another 1 inch for brake, that means your applying 2 inches of throw to the clutch, just be careful because you can over extend the clutch pressure plate causing the clutch to start to slip (bending the clutch pressure plate ears), honestly do the hand stick shifter with clutch lever attached! love the builds as always keep it up brothers!!!!

When you get a coolant temp gauge on that thing I believe you will find a real problem with overheating. For cooling you need the exhaust side to be equal (or more) in area to the intake side. The extremely small exit you have for airflow effectively cuts the efficiency of your cooling system to about 1/8 of what it was before you put the cover on it. You need a much larger exit for the airflow as well as getting a fan on it to make it as efficient as possible. I would also suggest installing a coolant temp gauge ASAP, BEFORE you burn up your engine.

I'll admit I was skeptical of the clutch/brake in that application, cool nice job. John's eyes the first time he punches it lol.

A little thought from me: This is called a mini trophy truck, so I think it should work like one especially suspension. Your design keeps suspension travel in mind, but I reckon there is some tuning work left to be done. From video I can figure out that the suspension frequency is too high the suspension work like a track racing car. You must use 2 or more stages of spring to achieve low frequency and good ride height. typical racing truck using 2/3 sag meaning 2/3 of the suspension travel is compressed just laying on the ground with the driver. Besides spring stiffness tuning, I think it is necessary to have some weight at far back of the mini truck. Keep chassis stable needs weight.

Great stuff as always guys. If I had one thing to suggest, and I know your not asking but, it's that I'd put a proper car bucket seat into it. Something real cheap and cheerful. I think it'd give you a bit more of a secure feeling but also a hell of a lot safer for your neck and back.....and all of your body really.

Gas pedal or any and all pedals are best when mounting hinge point above the pedal like a car has. So you have heel room witch is more important when your sitting on ground like a go cart vrs sitting up like a car. Something to think about for your comfort and full functionality

CAUTION: Jon and Ike , Please put a shield of some kind between you and that radiator and hoses . If that hose burst you are in for a world of hurt. I saw this happen a couple weeks ago on Cletus Macfarlanes channel when a kid was doing a burn out with a home built buggy with a similar set up to what you have ( He is in hospital with serious burns) . I love you guys you are part of my youtube family don't want to see you get hurt. Thanks
