I own a year old rabbit and so far we have spent over the past 10 months 1,000$ and more. Please dont get a rabbit if you know you cant care for it. They need so much love and time. But in the end if you are able too have one as a free roam pet then they will truly save you and in return love you!❤

I get horse stall pellets as a litter for around $6 for 40 lbs. Also try using bunny safe twine or string to tie the hay in a small bundle or disinfected pine cones as a couple diy toys. Certain cat or baby toys from the 99 cent store are great too. Cardboard isn't your only option for budget toys

I have two rabbits for under a year and have spent over $3,000.00 just on their vaccines, spay/neuter, medicine and many medical visits. That doesn’t include the cost of the destruction they have caused in our home. But they’re worth it, because they are adorable!
@myhomeremedies

A lot of these costs could be decreased with some basic thrifty and frugal techniques. For example. I have 2 bunnies, we go through a 50 lb box of hay every 5 months or so as opposed to the 1 box a month for 3 bunnies she mentioned in this video. While I think this is a great channel and has some great information, I do think a lot of her cleaning techniques and the hay box she uses are pretty wasteful with hay. I've seen videos with her dumping out the bottom of a hay box because it is "old". While my bunnies always have hay available, I am careful not to waste much of it, and use small hay racks above the little box, so only a little bit gets pulled down and each hay rack is completely eaten and refilled daily, so the hay is always fresh. Also, the hay they do pull down into the litter box serves to 'soften" the hardness of the pine pellets, so no need for Carefresh on top of the pellets. As far as veggies go, where we live, Kroger almost always has salads and other greens on clearance (the yellow WOW stickers...when they are close to expiring) so I buy those and it saves a ton on veggies. They are totally fine...not spoiled....we eat them ourselves and give them to our bunnies without any issue. I just have to check ingredients carefully to make sure all ingredients are okay for rabbits to eat. While I agree that rabbits can be expensive (as pretty much all pets) there are definitely ways you can try to save money and cut down on costs without cutting down on care.

Also you can find hay for way cheaper than $1 per pound. I just bought a 50 pound bale of alfalfa/timothy for $16! It should last at least 2 months with my 2 buns. That's a huge savings already compared to the $80 small pet select wants or $50 for oxbow.

@Hannah Marcum funny there. I also used to want rabbits a lot and even though im not a rabbit owner, i researched a ton. In my family situation, i think my parents would agree more on rats than rabbits. Ive never had that idea and to be honest, thats pretty smart, so that would work great. I hope you get your rabbits in the future. As for me, my parents said theyll discuss the possibility of my rats after coronavirus.

+ 1 on this , rabbits can be very picky on hay and take a while and lot money find the best for them with less waste. When you have good Hay you wont have lot letovers. Bunnies always selecting the best grass leafs and leave the others over , this falls down. Some Rabbits , like mine love to eat in eye hight or from ground , to avoid getting spoiled to fast , i lay it on the little Ikea Bed , the sit here for hours munching , when its flat i mix it up wit a big Hand full and its gets 2nd chanche saves a lot hay . When they no longer have an intresst in it i thorow it in they litterbox.

When we got our Bun, Oreo, I always planned that in a year or two I’d start convincing my parents to get another bun. Long story short, our local shelter has a bunny with a PERFECT personality and needs a lil boyfriend, but my parents still aren’t there yet!!!!!! I don’t know when I’ll get them there or how to, but these videos are comforting. UPDATE: She was adopted literally later that day by a wonderful guy named Mike and his bunny Revere. Now Winnie and Revere can live happily ever after, even if it wasn't with us.❤️

Rabbit care is very expensive. Stuff like vet care and vaccinations. Where I live, I only need to get RHDV2 vaccines, which are $100 each, annually, for two bunnies. If you're living in Europe, there are more vaccinations and stuff. GI stasis is also a big thing, and I have spent $400 on an emergency vet visit to save her life (BUYER BEWARE: stay away from any Peter's product. The 'grass' is actually cornhusk, and the local vet with a phd said this caused the stasis)
@erinw8509
@erinw8509 3 жыл бұрын
@Fernanda Lopez good luck if you choose to get a bunny! just remember, anything with cornhusk/corn is REALLY bad. another tip is to learn how to cut their nails. I shyed away from it for years and couldve saved myself a lot of money. just buy clippers (rabbit-specific) and watch a couple of youtube tutorials to make sure you're doing it properly.

Rabbits do not need $1000 of toys and storage. And many of these things you can buy when you need them. You can get a flake of hay from your local feed store for a few dollars and that will last you months. Instead of buying the critical care stuff, just grind hay or pellets and mix with water. I agree that bunnies are not "starter" pets, but I do believe they are good "mellow" pets because compared to other animals, they are more mellow than a dog per se. For anyone adopting a rabbit or thinking of it, I adopted my bun three weeks ago and it has cost me about 250 dollars to start off with, and I also didn't buy all my stuff, I already had some items I needed and got some from people around me, and my bun was already neutered.
@courtneyso1192
@courtneyso1192 4 жыл бұрын
sure a little more mellow, but as an owner of both a dog and a rabbit, i can confirm that the rabbit is as much if not more work than my dog. plus they’re a huge commitment lifespan wise, so i’d say they’re at the same level as dogs or cats. if you aren’t ready for a dog, don’t get a rabbit!

I have a rabbit and it isn't really that expensive. You can buy big bales of hay from local farmers for $10.. Or get grass that's been cut from your yard, make homemade toys, make pellets 15% of their diet and the rest veggies that they can eat and hay. bedding is pretty affordable too. Only $11 a bag. I line the litter box with old news paper that I get for free and put hay on one side and bedding on the other. My bunny loves it! I also found an XL dog cage for the bun for $30 on Craigslist. I let him out whenever I'm home, but he appreciates his spacious burrow 🥰. Save money for medical costs and things like that but it doesn't have to be that much money. He even has a little playhouse I made from a cardboard box. He plays in it all the time! There's ways to cut costs while giving your bunny the best life you can ❤️❤️🐇

Grass cut from your yard? Do you let them graze themselves or pull it yourself? As you know rabbits can't eat grass that's been cut with a lawnmower? & You shouldn't use newspaper in your litter tray as your rabbits will be eating hay off of this when it contains ink,which will run when it's wet?
@angel1xoxo
@angel1xoxo 4 жыл бұрын
Sasha Ayres I change the litter box every day. they don't even eat all the way to the bottom of it. I'm aware of the ink. It doesn't run at all. I don't feed my buns fresh cut grass, but as long as it doesn't have anything in it that is harmful to bunnies, then it is ok. Depending on the grass.

I did the same for 2 years before getting my bunny. I would also watch Stormy Rabbits and Victoria Raechelle's channel, and a couple other professional vet or rabbit rescue organization channels on KZbin over that time. I also visited official websites like House Rabbit Society (rabbit.org) for information on caring for rabbits.

Everybody thinks bunnies are cheap and easy to look after. They are not! They need alot of care and love. And can cost a lot of money. If you don't have the time and money don't get bunnies. Also they aren't suitable for children. On the plus side, they are clean, funny and will make you laugh every day with their antics. House rabbits are great company 👍🐰🐇. Adopting bunnies is one of the best things I have ever done

It doesn't have to be this expensive. If you're willing to put a little time in learning what they need and being creative, many items can be foraged or planted in a garden space, even grown indoors on a windowsill or a simple hydroponic setup.

Ok. I raised rabbits for many years. Not just had 3 rabbits,. But a huge herd of 150 rabbits. Rabbits need Timothy hay, 16% protein pellets for a non lactating doe or a young one,. 18% for a lactating doe. A piece of applewood is good for them to crib on to keep their teeth aligned. Buck teeth due to inbreeding is a common problem. Rabbits absolutely need water fresh water daily. Crocks tend to freeze in water, hot water works with frozen water. Diarhhea is fairly common problem with rabbits . A medicine called dri tail works well, keep some on hand. Trim back toe nail s, fairly important, twice a year I would treat the water with an antibiotic powder. It was easier than a syringe. Did you ever belong to the ARBA? I was a long time member and registrar of pedigree rabbits.

Oh yes sore hocks were a big problem, if you raise on wire, keep a piece of wood in the cage for the rabbit to get off of the wires with. I had every problem you could think of, including stuck babies in x birth canal. Raised mainly pedigree rabbits. I find your video a bit too yuppy.

Every Pet - if you truly take care of them (like you should do) - will be expensive. Toys, renewables,destruction,vet-costs,medication, transport-vehicles/boxes, food, furniture for Rabs (exsample: Digging-Box, cat-toilet) cleansing-material, and if you are obsessed -bunny proofed furniture. all in all it cost me more in a year then that what i spend on myself. But seeing my bunnys binking and flopping all the time, loving to learn tricks and grooming me after i pet them... ...it is so worth it! Give your pet the space and entertainment it needs, and you will be rewarded with a beautiful character of a pet-friend who will become family and cares for you.

I went to Walmart when I got my rabbit and they had pellets (small world) and Kaytee forti diet Timothy hay (24 oz,48,oz and 96 oz,4.24,7.99,14.99) and I got a bag of small world pellets (25 pounds) for 9.99 because I was thinking that was a awesome deal that would last me a few months or even a year and a two 96 oz bags of Timothy hay and the strands were so small but it smelled very good it smelled like fresh chamomile,so I fed my rabbit 1/4 cup of pellets and 2 cups of veggies (romaine and spinach ),and I didn’t buy a rabbit cage or hay feeder so I brought the bag to my rabbit (I have two bunnies now ) and she smelled it and went running towards it right away so I gave her a handful and she finished a handful in a hour so I gave her nine more handfuls. So each day I would give her ten handfuls and by the end of the week she would finish a 96 ounce bag so every month I would get four bags (I had to get hay at Walmart because I’m a kid and my parents didn’t want to risk getting another pet by going to petsmart or petco).I don’t know why but even i wanted to try the hay cause it smells so good

Chanel Garcia Yesterday’s News is outstanding for rabbits. I’ve used it, too. Where did you hear that Tractor Supply pellets cause cancer? Would like to read up on this. I hate their wood pellets because they are extremely dusty and FULL of sawdust. I complained multiple times to the store manager and corporate office when I first tried it, but NO ONE cared about the problem! I switched to the Yesterday’s News Original Unscented and we haven’t looked back. Great stuff.

We have to pay, Neuter when he was a baby, £82 for vaccinations (per year) And lots and lots of veggies (£8 a week) for 1 bunnies and 3 guinea pigs, Lots of hay, Debunked items, Litter, Toys, And what's free, love ❤ Oh and I forgot, I am going to rescue an obese bunny with overgrown claws and sore hocks (not spayed) from my uneducated nanas back garden because she thinks it's alright to keep her in a wire bottomed cage. She is fed nothing but Carrot and Apple and I know she will die. She is so perfect and gorgeous I really dont think that she deserves what shes getting. It was either our house or the high kill shelter so I know that she needs to come to our house, get spayed and best of all, BECOME FRIENDS WITH MY LONELY BUNNY AT HOME!! Omg.... they could get married but just not have kids! (Because they will both be neutered)

I have 15 rescue rabbits. 4 of them are fixed, because they're adults. 9 are babies born from a breeder I rescued, and one has a broken leg that I actually rescued today from a sucky human. I'm keeping four of the one's not fixed, and they'll be getting fixed when they're ready. It's about $60-$100 for a neuter here, and $100 for a spay. I'm very lucky to have it so cheap!! I also have a horse, so hay is easy 😂

my rabbit isn’t neutered yet. I wanted to do it when it was spring break (because rabbit neuters in my vet are available only on thursday and friday morning)and i had a job but then covid hit. I asked my vet how much it would cost and she said she would mail it and then a few days later, i got it and it’s $542. I have a spayed female but they’re not gonna get bonded until my male rabbit is neutered and recovered.

Please reconsider and get another rabbit as soon as you are financially able to! If my English seems a bit off, because I’m not using appropriate words since my native language is German, I apologize in advance and hope you will understand me regardless Can my rabbit live alone? -Are you there for your rabbit 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, until it dies? - Will you brush his ears and lick his eyes? - Are you bobbing around with him and exploring the surroundings? - Are you lying about seven hours a day with body contact together with your rabbit? - Can you speak the rabbit language and talk to your rabbit in everyday life? - Do you keep watch when your rabbit sleeps and knocks when a potential enemy approaches, so that your rabbit can really relax while sleeping because it knows you're watching? - ...etc ! If you can't answer these questions with yes, your rabbit needs another rabbit as a partner ! Think about ist: Even if you spend four hours a day working intensively with your rabbit, it's still 20 hours a day alone and lonely. That's 600 lonely hours a month and 57,600 in a whole rabbit's life. Also good care and a lot of enrichment can unfortunately not replace another rabbit. Therefore, get a second rabbit to give your rabbit a happy life. Fortunately, in Austria and Switzerland the keeping of rabbits is already banned, in Germany a new legal regulation is being sought. What scientific studies tell us about individual housing/keeping: Rabbits living alone move less than rabbits in the group. In addition, they eat out of boredom, so that obesity can occur more quickly. Extreme grating (and other behavioural abnormalities) was observed in the individual rabbits in one study, but was not found when observing pairs of rabbits. Despite various retreat possibilities, the rabbits preferred to lie down next to their partner. Are there incompatible rabbits? So my conclusion so far is: Every rabbit can find a partner! If you still think you have an incompatible rabbit with you, you can contact a breeder or an animal shelter to get help, they can provide you with many differently aged and mannered rabbits. Rabbit owners often break off the socialization prematurely because there are fights. Fighting and fur flight, however, is part of any combination, otherwise rabbits cannot clarify their ranking. Besides, not every rabbit gets along with everyone else. Sometimes you have to try two or three different rabbits. Most of the time, however, it works right off the bat. Other reasons for unsuccessful socialization may be wrong combinations or inappropriate husbandry/care/keeping or an inappropriate place for socialisation. In Germany keeping two rabbits is enforced by breeders, shelters and pet shops alike. Here is a quote, translated to English, by „Bundesverband praktizierender Tierärzte e.V“ which is a Federal Association of Practicing Veterinarians: Probably the most common problem in pet husbandry is monotony and associated boredom. Behavioural disorders are often the result. Rabbit-friendly husbandry should therefore - like any other animal husbandry - provide variety and environmental incentives. The contact to conspecifics is essential for the rabbit, which naturally lives in clans. The share of social behaviour in total behaviour amounts to up to 50% of total daily activity. For pet husbandry, two or more rabbits of the same age, which in the best case are used freshly weaned from the mother as a group, are ideal

Yeah the cost of buying a rabbit is a tiny investment compared to vet bills and also the food, specially the fresh veggies and greens, isn't as cheap like it is for a cat or a smal dog, also they are way more time consuming than cats. I have spent around 2000.- in the last three years since I got them, for vet bills like several GI-stasis, one had e-cuniculi, my female had to be spayed after I got her and one has a chronic respiratory disease... so you need to be aware of that. But I love my rabbits so much :)

My bunny is a year old and he has cost me over $5000 in vet costs, dental work, toys, food, cages, play yards, floor covering for his room, trips to a bunny vet (2 hours one way), medication, vegetables, etc. I will never advise anyone to get a bunny if they don’t have the money, the time, the dedication and a room (yes, a room! Not a cage!). Bunnies are delicate pets that require a lot of care, attention and training. You also must have access to specialized vet care!

I want to add something which I just clarified with NationWide insurance - they do cover GI stasis as long as it’s not pre-existing. So if you have an older bunny and they have a history of this then they will not cover it. My bunny is six months old and he’s super healthy. I got insurance for him and they said they cover pretty much everything except grooming, pre-existing conditions, training, and transportation.

I just think this is something important for owners of younger bunnies to think of. If you have an older bunny, I desperately wish they covered those conditions. But for younger bunnies, please don’t be discouraged from getting insurance. It’s so important and will save you money

Since the beginning of 2020 I've spend more than 2000$ on vet bill because my bun got a leg amputated. It doesn't include all the money I spend to accessorize his space for his now special needs. So maybe 200$ more. Add food, hay, vegetables, pee pads and toys. There are so many misconceptions about rabbits, but yeah... they ain't cheap! 😅
