Hey Kevin, I noticed when you do deflect parry punch your left foot kind of goes around the right foot. My Tai chi instructor often makes it a point to try and have the left foot go straight forward rather than around the right foot. She usually comments about having the right foot slightly more to the right when you do the parkqor step to make that possible. So I guess my question is what is the principles to keep in mind when judging the placement of the foot for the parkqor step? Also is it necessary for the left foot to go straight forward and not around the right foot? Cheers, Jordan

Hi Jordan, There seems to be lots of variation on this move. I have learned (and therefore teach as such) to have the Pa Kua step directly in front, as in right heel in front of left toe, about a half step forward forming a 90 degree angle between the feet. The body is turned to the right as you sit into the right leg and left arm forward. As you stand, there is expression from the left toes with the right leg pushing you up (spiraling). Once you are balanced in the right leg, you start to sit and spiral down to the right and the left leg comes straight through. There shouldn't be much 'stepping around' unless the Pa Kua step is further to the left of the left foot, almost cross stepping (some people prefer to do this as it makes for a tighter spiral in the legs and shifts the weight to the left). Some folks like to have the Pa Kua more open to the right which shifts the weight to the right and is easier to sit (although it seems some people don't sit at all and just step through without the spiraling aspect) and accommodates just walking through . Having the right foot to the right is not as stable, in my opinion, and tends to lose the connection with the spiraling action in the sitting and standing up. Remember that you are loading your weight down into the right foot so you want that foot under you to take the weight and keep the knee lined up. Think of the Tor Yus when you are in the forward position right foot forward. If the foot is too far to the right (out stepped) the foot is not under you when you sit. This can strain the knee and cause the hips to shift out of alignment losing the connection to the back leg and the spiraling down into the foot. Hope the long winded reply helps LOL Cheers
