The worst and hopefully last snow storm makes the forest bow once more. The deck is being taken down, I'm finishing the stone floor and go for a hike along the river.

Good morning. I’m w (57) live alone in the interior of Alaska, in a remote dry cabin the last 11 years. Don’t worry about the trees. As soon as the sap goes back into the tree‘s they will straighten out. Birch trees are the most resilient trees in the world. Also your chicken will lay eggs into the boxes if you put some straw in it. Saw dust is fine but they like boxes with straw better. It’s also healthier. They sit quite some time before the eggs come out and it is warmer with straw. We get a lot of snow here and I do my trails around the house with my snow shoes. It’s easier and way faster. Wish you a pleasant week, enjoy the snow, it will be soon over and mud season begins. Thank you for the beautiful videos.

Maybe where you are, they are. We had an ice storm years ago and there are patches of hillside where the only trees that failed were all birch. Whole sections died of from the stress. Years later, it's kind of dangerous walking in such places because they are full of widowmakers.

The communication in the viewing group is great. When someone has missed something they get an answer from another viewer. The world needs this lifting contact between peoples. Everyone is reading the comments and engaging. We’ve got some global work to do to remember how we are all connected, that listening to each other is a primary human need. Martijn’s videos seem to send me down this philosophical path. I think it emanates from his work. Ta, Martijn!

It's true, it's nice to be connected globally and learn about different cultures, but it's equally true that every people must proudly preserve their own identity and traditions. Thank you Martiijn, another beautiful video, wonderful closing music on this one, lovely. The floor looks absolutely beautiful, you must be very proud..my eyebrows went up a little at the acid being poured over it, but the effect was worth it! Yor overall skill with all aspects of this build are astonishing. Add to that painter, chef, stonemason and joiner...words fail me. Many congratulations. Only one thing I have a problem with..those ladies in the chicken coop...I would love for you to put a couple of bales of straw in there. One opened, broken up and spread about for them to kick about and forage in, and one left whole for a while, for them to sit on, scratch at , and generally enjoy. Bare earth is very limiting when its the only pecking they get in this kind of weather. I know they're allowed out in better weather. But a little extra something in these cold days would be a treat for them.🤞

Your floor is truly beautiful - well done! Here's a good "old timer" mountain snow story - I met an older man in the dentist not long ago, who said that in the winter of 1976(?) there had been a snow storm that had gone on for two weeks. He had just gotten his first job, down in town. Every day he dug out his car, went to work, and dug his way back into his parking space at home. Day by day the piles of snow around his car got taller and taller. Finally, they were well over the height of the roof of his car. He decided to put some long boards stretching from the top of one pile to the top of the other, and after that when he dug snow, he piled it on top of the boards. He smiled when he told me that after that, even though it kept snowing, he at least didn't have to dig out his car!

They intertwined all aspects: nature and the domestic aspects of life, house, work, neighbours, art, and music. A combination of all that elevates your mind and soul. Watching your hands dipped in that stream of water, one is wondering that those hands can hold an axe, a shavel, or a hammer, and also can hold a pencil or a painting brush and the result is art, a masterpiece. Tough, strong people, used to hard work, people who had to wrest their right to live from the mountains... because the mountain is stingy, very stingy, it makes you pay a heavy price for what it gives. No roads, only mule tracks, no off-road vehicles, only the faithful mule. the winters were much colder and snowier than now so the villages had to be self-sufficient because people could not move due to the snow. How well I remember living in wilderness areas in Central Oregon. We were blessed with geothermal heat from a capped geyser, but the extremes could be startling. One spring thaw, our bridge across the river was taken out by a house-sized berg that dislodged from the glacier five miles up, and rolled the riverbed our direction. But the scent of the sunny, dry, crisp air that winter is still in my memory. I look forward to your weekly journal of images with great earnest. It rekindled moments in my memory. Thank you.

I love watching your videos. I've watched for yrs now and you never cease to amaze me. You always take such pride in your work. Your details are unserpassed. You've created an unbelievably stunning home in the mountains for yourself. Your work is often backbreaking but you don't stop till you've reached your goals. The scenery is beautiful beyond words. I can almost smell the fresh mountain air. I'd give anything to live there. I'm 71 but if I had millions I'd offer it to you to build or remodel a smaller version and I'd live out my days in the mountains. I probably wouldn't make it 10 yds in that deep snow though. Your floors and all the stone work turned out awesome. You're a master craftsman. Thankyou for taking me along on your daily journey. Keep up the good work. God bless you. Sending love and prayers from NC 🇺🇸.

Hmmm. On Saturday evening at 10.30pm, one of your episodes was recommended to me, by the KZbin algorithm. 20 minutes in and I had subscribed. 4 1/2 hrs later, I thought I’d better go to bed! I feel said algorithm has cheated me. So many of your followers will have been with you from the very first upload…. I’m jealous. It’s now Monday afternoon and I’ve got almost 12 hrs under my belt! That’s the positive, I get to binge watch everything. In not too long, I’ll have caught up with everyone else. Your appreciation of your surroundings, your work ethic, your skills, your attention to detail, your camerawork, outstanding, simply outstanding. I tip my hat to you Sir. 👏🏻

I remember when you first started working inside and the fleas were so bad, they were driving you nuts. From then, to now. What a difference! To see the tent gone and the decking being removed. It must be a great feeling to finally be inside. The stone floors are amazing. The amount of work you have invested is monumental. Everything is perfect. I can't wait to see what everything looks like once the workshop has been built. (If anything, if it gets too cold outside you can always put the girls in the shop till it warms up!)

The one decision that had me scratching my head is the location of the chicken coop when it was being built - for just the reason illustrated in this video. In a wet, heavy snowfall like this one that's an *awful lot* of snow to shovel. I think at the time there was concern about smell if the coop was too close to the cabins. However, chickens coops don't smell at all when kept clean. When we had chickens our coop was less than 30 feet from our house and we could see it from the dining room. There was never any odor in the house on a hot day because I cleaned out out weekly. Our coop was about the same size as Martin's and we had 10 chickens.

Wonderful! The floor is so beautiful. Can’t wait to see it decorated. I know what you mean about working after the mini-disasters being fun in a way. I can remember a kitchen fire in our place on a remote Canadian island when every able-bodied person from a nearby reservation helped extinguish it. I was only 8 at the time and it made a deep impression. ❤

Ah, if only everyone found their perfect piece of the world! My reaction to awaking to 80 cm of snow would include at least a groan (or ten). To know that Martijn glories in all seasons on his patch of mountain is a joy. Life is good! The floor is an exquisitely timeless and beautiful piece of art that will endure hundred of years. And finally, you know that spring is on the way in the Italian Alps when the chickens foray out into the only bare patch of ground available pecking for still frozen bugs and worms. Happy days, Martijn!

Martijn, please clear the snow wherever you walk with a snow shovel first, then walk. In that way, you will not compress the snow and ice will not form. It will be easier to clean again when new snow falls, and that terrain will be dry(er) when snow starts melting. Also, cleaning the snow is awesome exercise.

Well... actually it doesn't matter if you walk your way trough the snow. You can still get most of it away. With so little equipment to get rid of the snow would take "ages". If you want to go and check that your chickens are ok... that's the way to do it. But you are right that snow is great way to exercise..we do it sometimes daily here in Finland. Now I just want spring 🌱 to became. Rather sooner than later. We had 10-20 centimeters snow last night. I was rather angry to see it...again! The ground was already almost melted from ice..I was so disappointed. I want to plant salad and tomato. 😊

@@hannikulju9990 I live in Stockholm and all my life I have told my kids to take away the snow before you walk on it. We have stonesteps up to the frontdoor and they did not clean them before walking, that was a lesson learnt later on when they fell and injured themselfes… the snow turns into ice on the walkway and is melting slower then snow so it becomes a sloping scatingrink in spring…

The floor downstairs is stunningly beautiful. You are right, washing it with the acid makes a huge difference. Just covering the concrete with that stone has already warmed the room up dramatically. As you say, it just needs some simple furnishings to soften the room. Although, I already feel that it is cosy enough and with a fire in the grate, that in itself helps to soften the ambience.
