The weather remains extreme with heavy snowstorms, as I continue the stone work inside. Many trees have collapsed and block the road.

People who have never had the opportunity to test themselves as you certainly have, will never truly know what it feels like to accomplish what you have accomplished, ALONE. It’s been interesting to watch the episodes where you’ve had smart, willing and strong people volunteer to assist with some of the hard labor BUT working alone 99% of the time keeping the ship on course, the decks cleared, then restocked and re-cleared for the next engagement AND keeping and your wits about you all while documenting and sharing your exceptional endeavors… WOW! The bending trees makes me think of American poet Robert Frost's poem Birches (at least this part of it anyway): When I see birches bend to left and right Across the lines of straighter darker trees, I like to think some boy’s been swinging them. But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay As ice-storms do. Often you must have seen them Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning After a rain. They click upon themselves As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel. Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust- Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.

"It needs to be given back to nature." Wonderful words and actions that we can all aspire to. It can be difficult to tear down previously used areas or plant trees and grasses near our homes without it impeding human structures and causing potential damage to homesteads, but it is important to always think of the biodiversity of habitat. Embracing nature is part of the journey; encouraging habitat and living within it has only positive outcomes.

Am I the only one impressed by how strong your windshield wipers are? At 24:32 those things were pushing a massive block of snow up the windshield. Wonderful episode as per usual. Keep up the good work!

Yes, a gazebo would definitely look too urbane for an alpine farmstead. But it’s definitely fitting that your decking is being recycled and yet keeping its purpose intact!

Awesome video as always! Mortar residue cleaning tip: Use a diluted acid solution, spray on, wait, rinse off. I’ve done this as recommended by a brick mason, works great. Safety recommendation: As a residential designer, a stair handrail is highly recommended. Might not go with your intended design but can be a life saver. Cheers!

Having a toilet there wouldn't be great, but not having one seems far worse. I guess if he's the only one living there it's fine, but if he has guests it could be problematic. I don't know of any woman who would stay in a place without an easy access toilet (my wife laughed when I told her about it).

@@richardinglis4909 I don't know too much about the situation in this case, but isn't it really nice to spred your home out a bit when you can, when you have several buildings? Bedroom may be good for sleeping and such, but other spaces better for other functions.

Hello, Martijn. I have thought about your decision not to put a toilet in the cabin and remembered that I saw an off-grid toilet that incinerated materials rather than composting them. I don't remember whether it was run on butane or propane but it was one of those. The toilet was owned by an older woman living in a tiny house who was most happy with the ease of maintenance. It could be something to consider as an alternative to the outhouse on snowy days! I'm glad I'm all wrapped up in my jammies with a quilt over my lap to watch this beautiful, snowy episode. Thanks so much.

Here in the Appalachians, we also get these late, heavy snows, typically followed by high winds which compound the damage. At some point, the sound of cracking and falling trees signals the woods can no longer bear the powerful wind. Many here have trail vehicles, 4-wheelers and side-by-sides, to which we attach small snow blades. They can go where no cars or trucks can go and can clear the narrow roads. They are also good for shoving the downed trees aside. Yes, these snows bring "a bit of work," an understatement. I am near 70, and a woman, and like you, have no one nearby. Loading in the firewood and clearing snow from the Christmas trees is a challenge. Keep your protein and fluids up, lol. Always keep several weeks of food, at least some dried beans and rice to get you through. Cheers and dreams of spring! Much love from the highlands of Virginia ❤️

I hate that heavy wet snow, we get it often here in central Italy. It causes a lot of damage even when it does not result in avalanches. It brings down electric and telephone lines, collapses barns and roofs...

Your decision to keep the tent area grass is in keeping with your choice of minimalistic. I agree with your decision to keep it natural. A table, chairs and grass is the way to go. Such an awesome view from there. It’s a shame about your tire chains. I’m sure you’ll figure out what is right and works well with your new vehicle. Stay well.

Amazing how the colors are grey white and dark at first. The branches are sad and bowed down in snow and ice. And then the blue sky comes out. I am sure the snow will cause flooding and change to the terrain. Hearing the water roar in the distance . So glad you are safe . Thank you for sharing your story

Dear Martijn, your photography is stunning. The many gray tones of the sky, mountains and snow and trees and then comes the splash of a cold blue sky, wow you capture so much beauty. I’m glad you are living and restoring while keeping the integrity of the mountain farmland and historic structures. A gazebo would be so out of place. I do remember when you were living in the tent and you would open the doorway, the views from that angle are magnificent and a perfect area for grass and a table and chairs. Great stonework. Stay safe with the storms.

One important tip: Never give the chickens whole eggs to eat, because this way they will learn that this are food and will eat them before you collect them. Take care! See you next week.😉✌️

Here in the States when we install natural stone flooring the chemical binders and powdery color additives in the grout want to penetrate into the tiniest of pores in stones so we use a quality water-base sealer usually rolled or brushed on the stone before we grout with a sponge or flexible grout float. The sealer has no visible sheen unless you want a satin sheen or gloss sealer but the no-sheen sealers don't change the natural colors of the stone and remarkably make that residue haze cleanup so much easier and far less time consuming. There are cheap stone sealers that are useless but professional stone installers everywhere in the world always know the best brand and product to use that works great and usually sold at pro-installer stone yards.😇😇

This is so beautiful! I love heavy, thick snow. Everything gets so silent. Its like the world itself falls asleep. Its a time to rest, and be like a bear. Sleepy, warm and cozy inside our manmade caves. I wish we'd get those heavy snowfalls more often but alas, the world is changing. Nowadays its a wonder if we have more than a cm of snow.

It's gorgeous up there in the snow, if I was a billionaire I think I'd still choose that life. Have you thought about using a brick seal on the walls? It'll bring out the colours of the stones and seal the pointing so it'll be less dusty.
