Love that you’re working on a 2.6L IOE straight six rover engine. I’m four years into a frame off restoration on a 1981 Series III 109 Ex-MOD that I’m converting to the civilian look. So glad to see this video!!!!!

Hello Mike, Watching you work on that old engine brings back a lot of memories. I worked on a lot of those 6 cyl engines. Not all of them were in Land Rovers. Most of them were in P4 Rover saloon cars. Including a Rover 110 (not a Defender 110).

My first Land Rover was an S3 109 6 cylinder - not the sort of vehicle you need when you are out of work! Tad thirsty!
@patrickthompson7683 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations I recall looking in a S3 sales pamphlet and they showed an over drive as a factory option. The 2.6 did not like runnig at high rpms. A 1953 Rover 75 was my first experience with the IOE engine. The earlier variant of the 2.6.

A mate had a 109 with this motor. he called saying he'd broken down and the exhaust had exploded! The drive for the distributor and oil pump had stripped, and the distributor timing was miles out. On cranking the rotor arm would move a few degrees occasionally instead of going round. I found a Rover P4 specialist who had a drive in stock, and after retiming and setting the valve clearances, as well as a new silencer, it drove sweet as a nut! That side chest gasket was a pain to get located, but it all worked in the end.

As a blast from the past, I was taught by a former Rolls Royce engineer that Rolls only approved the use of a product called"Hylomar", which also was blue and looks very similar. I've done the tappets on those engine's many many times as its basically the same engine as the old Rover 80's, like the first Landover Petrol engines and the 90, 100 and 110! Brought back many happy memories of the 1960s! 👌

I have no idea how to adjust the exhaust valves without removing the wing for access! I had one of these many years ago and it was not the best vehicle to run when you were unemployed! Rather thirsty!
@johncollier77444 жыл бұрын
The exhaust valve adjustment on the B60/61/80/81 was also a pain in the backside. Yes Hylomar was the preferred product by RR. Also Perkins V8 head gaskets had to be lathered in the stuff before fitting.

I got a chance to drive the new Defender on an off road track in Palm Springs in January (Land Rover actually FLEW them over from the factory). It wasn't a rugged Camel Trophy like track (the Camel Trophy guys were also there), but I have to say, I was very impressed with the wheel articulation and the traction control gizmos. Yes, it's no classic Defender, but it will be replacing my Audi SUV as my 3rd Defender.
@andrewwhitnet35574 жыл бұрын
I think the washer needs to have a good seal around the bolt or the oil will just go up the midle and not through the filter. Cheers from Lancs.

Seen one good advert for the defender where it's being jumped and another shot of how it survives roll over which I have to say was impressive,Windows still intact! Just the top of the wing dented and it drove off no problem!

Hi Mike Loving your videos. I’d be really interested in a video on setting the valves on this engine or on your S1. I’m needing to have a go on my 86” but having never done it before not 100% certain on how to go about it. Cheers

Sorry but I have no engines needing valves but they are not too bad to do - if you are doing them in the vehicle then removing the left hand wing helps tremendously

Great video Mike, must admit that I always found these over head side valve engine were quite reliable once you set them up correctly, like you have just done. I can only wunder what unnecessary wear has taken place due to an incorrectly fitted filter element. Just an idea, check out the bolt configuration of how the filter housing is bolted to the block, you might get a surprise and find that you can change the housing for a more modern canister type, I,v been lucky a few times doing that. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob, keep em coming Mike.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
The filter was a bugger to get back on! Even with the wing off, as you have to push up the housing and turn the bolt - you have to be a contortionist to do this!

@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
The lower pin retention bolts (M10) should be 23 Nm according to the bolt grade - 78 Nm is for a grade 10.9 bolt found on the swivel ball to axle Use Loctite and make sure all surfaces are oil free The LR manuals are wrong

Agree with you on the new Defender, they should be driving it across all the worlds deserts and jungles to show what a capable vehicle it is. Maybe they planned a few trips and realised that not only are there no JLR dealerships to plug into in remote places, there isn't even electricity for the diagnostic machines if there was a dealership. Over 50 ECU's in an off roader? Still it wont need a repair shop as they promised this one will be uber reliable.

@@BritannicaRestorations I remember reading about the Classic Range Rover testing. One group took it into the desert to see how it would perform. The big V8 and coils all round shocked the crew, they struggled to get it stuck, at one point they dug holes to help it get stuck and it still drove itself out! Put the new Defender to work in Africa, Australia or South America and then we will see if it is the true successor.
