Native Kansas Citian here. Bryant’s and Gate’s don’t even make my top 20. B&B Lawnside (and blues) is my fave. The Plaza area was a toxic swamp before it became the gem it is today. Seville Spain is our sister city. Thus the Spanish architecture. Be there for the Plaza lighting ceremony on TG nite. Don’t forget Westport and the Zoo. One big downer is the HOT/HUMID summer weather. That’s a big reason that I left in 1977.

Some clarifications It's not the "science center." It's "Science City." Primarily it hosts traveling exhibits that feature historic cultural artifacts like Stonehenge, and the inventions of DaVinci. Currently the exhibit is about the Mayan Culture. Oh, and you can find a free parking spot within walking distance, or travel there on the free public transportaion on the streetcars, and buses. All large cities have areas that are "sketchy," but, not to say it doesn't happen, in my entire life here, I don't personally know anyone who was "mugged," and I grew up in what many would call a "sketchy" part of town. The first statue shown is "The Pioneer Mother," a depiction of homesteaders heading west to seek a new life. Kansas City's most iconic statue is "The Scout" depicting a Native American on horseback overlooking the confluence of the Kansas River ("The Kaw"), and the Missouri River ("Big Muddy"). It's visible across the valley to the southwest from the Liberty Memorial (what the WW I Museum has been called locally since it was contructed.) LOL. I don't know anyone who has toured the Federal Reserve Bank on the site adjacent to Liberty Memorial that used to be the site of a Catholic hospital. Kansas City has the tallest City Hall in the country. The observation deck would be the 30th floor. It is a great place from which to see the city's expanse as it towers above the disected plateau, and valleys where the city was built. The T-Mobile Center (formerly Sprint Center before the corporate merger) is not a "stadium", but an arena built primarily for basketball. Within it is the College Basketball Hall of Fame with a fan experience section. It also has become a primary concert venue for people who care less about sound quality than just being there. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is within site of the arena, and is built for acoustics, not public address systems through loudspeakers. The Plaza whose archetecture led to KC being a sister city with Seville, Spain is adjacent to what's known as Kansas City's cultural center; within walking distance of the Nelson Art Gallery, Midwest Research Institute, the Stowers Cancer Research Center, Murial Kauffman Botanical Garden, and University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). The Plaza is traditionally a spectacle of lights during the Holidays with all of the buildings outlined. The lighting ceremony each Thanksgiving Night is a big todo with live music, and a local celebrity throwing the switch. For BBQ, besides Gates and Bryants, there's L.C.'s, Big T's, Smoke Stack (aka Fiorella's Jack Stack), Joe's KC, and numerous Craft BBQ places. If you want to hear some good local Blues with your BBQ, check out for one, BB''s Lawnside BBQ on 85th street. The 18th and Vine District was the focal point of Jazz in Kansas City; where Charlie Parker would sneak into the balcony as a youngster, and listen to the old-timers play. It includes both the Jazz Museum, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and adjacent to it is a Baseball Academy that serves urban youth with coaching by former and current professional baseball players. KC also has a world class zoological garden in Swope Park, one of the largest (I believe 2nd largest after Central Park in NY) municipal parks in the country. Besides the Zoo, there are two golf courses, the Swope Memorial course designed by A.W. Tillinghast, "Lake of the Woods," that is overlooked by Youth Camp facility with cabins, mess hall, etc., Swope Soccer village with a training facility that will host some of the International teams that come to town for the next World Cup, a free Nature Center that houses and rehabilitates injured wildlife (The raptor birds there are magnificent; eagles, falcons, hawks and owls, and the fattest Timber Rattlesnake I've ever seen is scary.), a large community center, and Starlight Theater, an outdoor amphiteather that hosts everything from Broadway Musicals to Rock Concerts. And if you want to venture into the adjacent cities like Independence, Mo, there's for instance the Harry S Truman Library, and Bess Truman's house, and the RLDS auditorium complex where Joseph Smith claimed is the site of the "2nd Coming."
