DON'T FORGET the time Luffy almost drowned at Enies Lobby by trying to take a flimsy rowboat to the bridge of hesitation, and had it not been for the arrival of Chimney & Gonbe, he would've died. Unlike other times when Luffy almost drowned, none of his crew were there to see him fall. He easily, EASILY could've died if C&G hadn't found his location by accident at that time.

I think there's one more instance that was forgotten! Rob Lucci almost got Luffy killed twice. Once on Water 7, where if he hadn't been found in time, Luffy would have been consumed by Aqua Laguna while stuck between buildings. And then there's right after beating Lucci, Luffy could not move and escape the oncoming Buster Call without Merry suddenly emerging to whisk everyone away.

This is why Luffy should always top those lists of anime characters that need the most help to win. Sure, when it comes down to the fights Luffy tends to ultimately take care of business on his own. But in so many situations he never would have been able to survive long enough to get there if it weren't for others picking up his slack for being so stupid. Seriously, eating the poison fish was so frustratingly dumb, especially because everyone told him not to do it right away

Even in some fights, he needed others to win in the end. In Dress Rosa, the people needed to give him 10 minutes, so he can recover his Haki. And against Kaido others had to step in because First he ran out of juice again, then he was thrown off onigashima and then he needed his fruit awakening to get revived. But i think people often say that about other anime characters, because there are some, that need help many times. I mean i would argue, that naruto was only able to do most of things he did because of kurama. Kurama and his fox chakra alone carried him through normal naruto, and even in Shippuden he heavily was in need of his jinjuriki chakra. (I dont want to say, that this is a bad thing, i mean it was forced onto him, so why dont use it but after he accepted this he relied on it. But maybe this isnt the best comparison)

Definitely a net gain in the end, but hard to say how Naruto's skills would've developed without a tailed beast messing up his chakra control early on.

It’s interesting how many of these are pre time skip vs post time skip. Part of that is the number of antogonists is more pre time skips since arcs are shorter, but I think it’s also an indiviation of how luffy’s will and determination had to essentially make up for his lacking strength in certain pre time skip situations. During the time skip and throughout post time skip, we see his strength is enough in most situations and so therefore his “risks” are not as often, to the point of near death

As the protagonist, Luffy has plot armor protecting him, though I do like how it's acknowledged by other characters how Luffy has a knack for surviving the seemingly impossible. His involvement in the Paramount War is a good example, since they think Luffy would just be swept up and overwhelmed through it all, but he managed to (just barely) survive everything he went through during that Saga. It's clear that Destiny has plans for Luffy in this world... ...Of course, that doesn't mean some of the times Luffy does manage to miraculously survive near-death encounters feel a bit more annoyingly contrived than others. For me, the most glaring examples are two back-to-back scenarios where Luffy comes close to death but manages to survive by sheer happenstance, and it's both on the way to Totto Land to get Sanji back from Big Mom. First, Luffy eats one of Carrot's carrots, which angers Carrot enough to bit him *on the neck*. Once she calms down, it's pointed out that she just barely missed his jugular vein, which would have basically been instant death for Luffy. Then later one, they catch a massive fish whose skin is deadly poisonous, yet Luffy is so hungry he eats all of the fish's skin (and ONLY its skin, if I recall correctly, which is weird). Despite the natural antibodies he gained form his encounter with Magellan, the poison he ingested is enough to kill a giant and is slowly overtaking him, and Nami and Chopper are all crying out how he's supposed to be the King of the Pirates and can't die here, when who should show up but Reiju, who JUST SO HAPPENS to have a power that lets her suck out and eat poison, saving Luffy. Individually, these would be noticeable near-death moments for Luffy, but the fact that they were so close together really annoyed me when reading it. Of course, any time Luffy almost dies because of his own stupidity but survives because he's meant for greater things tends to get on my nerves; like it's one thing if Luffy made a knowing risk on his life for something that matters, that's one thing, but the fact that he constantly throws caution to the wind and often puts himself and his crew in danger as a result... Well, you know, it's not nearly as big a problem as I'm making it out to be, so I shouldn't really complain all that much.

Jimbei even says on the same panel "youre at your limits" his legs literallly gave out. And considiring all the dmg, healing from poison and other abuse. Its no wonder.

Okay, so if the series thus far is an accurate predictor for the future, there is a 100% chance Luffy will get poisoned any time he ends up in an actual prison (I feel like it's necessary to make the distinction of an ACTUAL prison, because there have been plenty of times when he's ended up in cages that were NOT part of any actual prison that he managed to get out of it without any poison exposure). Also, you omitted the time Crocodile locked him (and others) in a sea prism stone cage in a flooding room filled with banana gators. Just 2 (crazy) thoughts 1. What if the Gorosei were actually the real devils trapped within the fruits and Imu was somewhat able to separate them from their fruits and let them loose. And Maybe they obey Imu not just bc of a hierarchy thing but also bc Imu knows how to seal them back into fruits. This could explain why Oda presented the Gorosei in the description bubble like real devils instead of DF users. This makes me think Imu is the last fight as BB uses multiple DV powers trapped inside of him but Imu is on a whole other level where he/she can release these things. 2. We’ve seen all kinds of races and tribes with different attributes. The magic (or alchemy?) thing may actually be real and Imu was like a powerful witch/alchemist/scientist at that time who created a way to seal all sorts of things in fruits. It was all good until Imu did the forbidden/unthinkable thing of also sealing living things in fruits. This could also explain why Zoan fruits are special

I'm still not entirely convinced that Dragon's eaten some kind of storm god fruit and that he lightninged Luffy to safety followed by "south winds bwowing" all the troops and the guns and everything around. That does still seem entirely plausible, of course, and it's probably what's going on, but somewhere in the back of my mind... I keep thinking about how Dragon was talking about fate quite a bit back at Loguetown and that it was Fate itself that caused those freaky weather related events to save Luffy's life... and also Dragon confronting the smoking man named.... eh it'll come to me. I only say this because "fate reading" is a strange running theme in this story, from all the talk about the "chosen moment" coming at some predesignated future time, to crystal ball reading and card reading from a certain mer-person and straw-person respectively.

luffy using his blood to effectively punch 🐊 (counter his logia) is bullshit. 🐊 is a pirate, he fights in ocean. That's bullshit. Even using water wasn't sensible coz croco dehydrated luffy easily, so it shouldn't even take a sec for him to dry himself. But even if I accept this. Using just a wet hand with blood is bullshit. If this was the case 🐊 should be the weakest logia even weaker than caribou.

what about that time in thriller bark?? Yes we now know Kuma's real intentions But would it count? I believe it's similar to Aokji's scenario. Luffy was unconscious and his only hope was Zoro who literally accepted that his own life was the only thing he had left to offer, since he couldn't fight, or run away, or do anything but watch his captain die. If Zoro couldn't do anything but offer his own head to replace his captain's, i doubt any of the others, still conscious could have done anything. Or since Kuma never wanted Luffy to die, this time doesn't count??
