I think what I appreciate most about Martijns visual journals, is that it tells a universal human story that relates to all of us. We arrive in the world with a deep desire to find a place we can call our home. A place that like the oceans forms the rocks and beaches on its shore, can mould and shape us as people. We long to find who we are in the big scheme of the natural world and with what can we contribute. Will we find a place to spend our life which in a sense is larger than ourselves, and where our legacy and memory somehow can live on, even after the days when we are the ones who lived long ago. Fame and fortune dissolve into meaninglessness when we’ve found our sense of coming home. Many might leave the world having these questions unanswered, but too see someone who takes the time and makes the effort and sacrifices in order to make for themselves a true home, is probably what’s most inspiring.

I’ve long equated your work to performance art. You create wonderfully curated content that is aesthetically gorgeous and acoustically soothing. You show a way of life that is the envy of so many who seek something authentic and is in touch with nature…the antithesis of our modern life. It’s narrative art, much like a great novel. Except it unfolds in real time week by week. I’m drawn as much to the technique of your filmmaking as to the craftsmanship of your work. Few in the KZbin space go to the trouble of color-grading as you do on a weekly basis. And, the sound quality of your films is probably the thing that grabs most viewers without them even knowing. I don’t know how you do it…can’t spot any mics on you and yet we hear everything. You’re living a mini-series :) You’re the star with a supporting cast of a hermit priest, chickens, your family, your car, and a host of other characters. Lastly, you do your monologues in a way that’s like talking to a good friend. It’s intimate and ernest. We certainly appreciate your work. It’s a source of enjoyment and inspiration to us for a couple of years now and indirectly contributed to us owning a slice of the Cottian Alps. Much appreciated!

Lovely now that Martijn is no longer focused upon getting the first cabin finished, he can now turn his attention and care to the property at large, carving out a trail in the impenetrable forest to the lovely old beech tree, building this stunning greenhouse, and hopefully soon, starting on the workshop, storage and new outdoor kitchen/workspace above the cabins! This is a banner year in his beautiful quest to build a life in the Piedmont. We're so very lucky we get to tag along! Thanks you from Cajun country in south Louisiana, Martijn!

@@BobKelly-fr5kh Gosh, Bob. Maybe he shouldn't be allowed to drive his new Mitsubishi Pajero down the mountain roads as hapless salamanders, newts, snails and Piedmont worms might get crushed under the cruel wheels. "Forest habitat" eh? LOOK! There's Bambi!! But seriously... If you've watched every episode, you know that the "forest habitat" Martijn cleared a path through to the old beech tree, was meadow when he bought it. The birch and other trees grow incredibly fast, and Martijn's 6 acres would be entirely forested in a couple years if he didn't clear the trees back. He's not clearing historic old-growth forests, it's more akin to clearing weeds from a suburban lawn.

@@duncanfrere2656 I appreciate your two cents...great Mitsubishi Pajero plug btw...need a new car? It sounds like you don't care about any of the ecological affects impacting the very sensitive area that is Val pellice (which happens to be one of the only Alps valleys in Italy that has a dead-end road, no highway through it and isn't industrialized!). I manage a wild bird rescue, research and sanctuary in Angrogna, Val Pellice. I am sure that if you are such a devoted fan(arse kisser) and, having watched every episode from your armchair, you'll know where Angrogna is and how very important it is to help this forested corridor under pressure from an overpopulated France, Germany and Italy. Throwing around terms like "historic old growth forests" in relationship to the Alps geology, Piemontese history and the European migratory birds in this area makes you look stupid. Most old trees here are about 60-100 years - overgrown grazing land. Barfe has an altitude of 1000+ metres where trees grow slowly, So the term "historic old growth forest" has no significance in relation to my concern/comment about cutting trees down in spring and summer in Angrogna where there is a legal ban on cutting down trees in the spring and summer (trees are in leaf and birds seek a safe nesting location). I suggest you get offline and get outdoors to smell the roses before making such criticisms based on your ill informed, KZbin fantasy world concepts.

I’m a poet, a very old poet :-), and I often find those atmospheric walks of yours in the snow, in the mist etc very stimulating….hence the adaptation of Tolkein’s poem of Over the hills and far away. You have, if you don’t mind my saying so, a poetic view of the mountains, forests and long forgotten cottages that is just beautiful. I did start a poem of my own on that walk of yours, up through the forest and the mist, which will take a while to complete and work on and it’s too big to get on here, but thanks, thanks for all the work and dedication you put into your vids. I’m too old and frail, and my spaniel is also :-) to come visit you but I appreciate that through the vids you come and visit us. All good wishes from me and Meg, the spaniel

I just realized with all of the interesting and delicious looking food you make, you should put together and publish a cookbook. I would totally buy it! 😋

I watch nothing but Utube have for years. And I don't comment. But you and what you do are truly something special. I love your style your attitude towards life and family. I've been sick for a while and your show truly gives me such a beautiful place to escape. Thank you. God bless and keep on keeping on😂 😁

I like that you have a very realistic work/life balance. When you had to have shelter for Winter you worked very hard every day to get it done. Now that you have permanent shelter you are moving at a relaxed pace and taking more time for yourself. Good life lesson.😊

Martijn already knows to add 2 weeks to any timeline he gets from the locals 😁. I’ve also learned this lesson here.

At least once while watching every video, I am struck by how beautiful these stone cabins are. It is not lost on me that they are 100 years old. The recent work that has been done only enhances the beauty! Well done, Martijn.

Once again I am impressed by Martijn's professional construction of his greenhouse. But no less by his trick of attaching the temporary roof covering in such a way that the corrugated material can later be used for other purposes without holes. A greenhouse like this will be hard to match for a long time !!
