Hey there loving the school bus series . Back when I was a kid and had split rims on my 1972 ford pickup, I used a little dish soap to get those stubborn boogers to break loose. That usually works really good. It just all of the corrosion and crud that has built up is why the tires aren't letting go. Please be careful using those old high lift jacks, there's been a lot of guys hurt really bad using those darn things. I'm excited to see the progress you make and this old girl. She is going to be a beauty when she's done. Stay safe.

When we used to do my dad's school bus tires used to take a tire chisel and go all the way around the edges till you break the beads then you'd pull the rings out. Chisholm the tires breaks the beads make some come off easier. Also always put a chain around the rim when you inflate them. I was only a probably about 10 or 11 years old when I used to have to do bus tires and boy did I hate to do them especially around school bus inspection time. Just started watch the video hope you had a successful and safe journey 👍❤️💥💥💥💯❤️

0:52 I have worked on the Windowmaker rims, and yes they are still in use today. Mostly on industrial forklifts.. When I worked for a Commercial Tire shop in North Vancouver BC, Canada. We use to have fun with "air pressure" and man oh man 150 psi will do a ton of damage to a 12" rim. 17:43 you need a hydraulic ram to break the bead. NOTHING is going to break that bead otherwise, most commercial tires are using at least 100 psi. That is a HUGE amount of force to try and break free, specially if they are rusted in place.

Jason, I used to in my younger years used to change those tires. The split rims you have can be dangerous as well as the 3 piece rims. Trust me I know, had one blow up on me and nearly lost a finger. To make things easier to get the tires on and off the rims we used to use Murphy's oil soap. Makes a difficult jod less difficult but still difficult. Another thing I would suggest if possible if you're going to continue working on tires with these types of rims to try and invest in a proper tire hammer makes a big difference in breaking down the rims. Good luck and can't wait to see the finished product.

I used to work in a tire shop 40 some years ago. Worked on many split rims. Mineral spirits and duck bill hammers to break the beads. Then a cage to inflate them. Prying on those lock rings like you are distorts them making them even more dangerous.

A tip from a tire man still in business since 1993. To prove this works and makes since. Rub your hands together fast keep rubbing. Notice hands getting warm then hot keep doing this for a few hours like driving the bus. This is what the tube is feeling! Put hands in bag of baby powder rub together no warmth or heat. Tire installed with tube has more pressure, weight, friction and speed. Tube in tire will chafe and burn up early installed dry or wet. Most tire guys install tubes wrong. Before installing a new tube blow up just tube and deflate to the outside diameter of the tire 3-4 times. reInstalling used tires, wheels, tubes or flaps. Inspect everything clean dirt off, blowing off with compressed air or soap - water and let fully dry. Real slowly feel inside of new or used tire, tube, flap and wheel with back of hand slowly in case of rough edges. If rough edges fix or replace. When installing tube get radial tube, even for a bias tire. Radial tube can be used in bias or radial tire. Radial tube is heavier and lasts longer than a bias tube same as a radial tire it lasts longer than a bias. When installing tube air up some just a little make sure tube is not twisted in tire once looks good deflate. Install plenty of baby powder!!! Roll tire around a few times with no air then install in safety cage set air regulator to recommended air pressure of tire and vehicle. Since google and liability are so funny the rest has been left out. I've had tubes to last for several years installed correctly. This baby powder makes a big mess I do it out side with with fan pulling baby powder away. You can go tubeless wheels and tires possibly or change hubs over to more of a common wheel and tire package. Don't breathe baby powder!!!

It was painful watching you change tires, but loving the bus. You take the big sledge and drive tire off of ring first, then remove ring. Second, use the high lift jack under a vehicle to push tire off the ring, (breaking it down) on both sides if hammer doesn't work. Old tires get corroded on so persuasion is key.

Be VERY careful with any Split Rim Wheels. My grandfather always bolted a chain around the tire and rim to keep the split ring from flying off while working with them. He told me of a man he knew got his head cut off when that ring popped loose. This happened right in front of my grandfather. I have some Split Rims in my back yard that came off a 1970 Ford 1/2 Ton Pickup I inherited from my grandfather after he passed away in 2001. I replaced those rims with something a bit newer not long after. I no longer own the truck, but I STILL have those old wheels. They lie Split Ring side down in my yard for safety reasons. It is no laughing joke about those type of rims, THEY CAN LOOK HARMLESS BUT STILL BE JUST AS DANGEROUS. Please don't joke about something like that. They ARE widow and orphan makers. I enjoy watching your videos too much too have them permanently end in that violent of a manner. Stay safe, Stay healthy, Stay away from any Split Rim wheel.

Another cheap tip if you don't have a adjustable wheel stand. Get a 1 inch + smaller old wheel on floor to elevate you wheel above for breaking down. A floor spare tire twist jack under the rear receiver hitch to break down tire. Get socket that fits twist piece in jack and greese threaded rod on spare tire twist jack. Tire hammer side wall or beat with slide hammer. They make a nice manual Bead breaking tool that clamps on wheel rim to break down with electric or air impact..

When I take tires off the rims, I have a little easier way. Get a bottle jack and use the hitch on you truck. You can put a small 2x4 on it if you want. Place the tire under your hitch. Love it but seriously ive been stuffing around with cars n trucks for years and highly recommend getting better rims. The old v8 isn't a problem but save yourself trouble and get different wheels. Love your work by the way

Paint them. Do not powder coat! Paint can always be touched up if needed, but powder coating traps moisture behind it and makes thing rust three times faster. Yep....I found this out. Just a heads up.

Good job buddy, we use to run them split rims on our old dump trucks. Tire guy use to put them under the car lift to air them up. You can use the house jack on the tires under the bus bumper to break down from the rim. Keep em rollin.

For the cost of those tires the shop wouldn’t dismount and mount the tires?

I worked on those types of rims when I was younger. You have to liberally lube up the area between the tire and the rim, then use a bead breaking hammer. You have to stand on the tire and swing the hammer like an ax striking right at bead til the bead breaks. It's hard work
@CountryBoyGasGarage

Definitely hard work! It was my first attempt and failed...lol! I guess the tire shop had to cut them off.

A lot of people automatically think it IS the widow makers. but no. If i remember correctly there are 3 different types. Actual split rim, locking ring, and, split ring? As you mentioned. a local COE truck near me (the mid-50s) i want to go look at i pray to god it doesn't have split rims. I'd be fine with a locking ring. you are a LOT braver than most on YT here messing with these old things. P.s those old suicide jacks are JUST as dangerous. Rare sight. good lord. I bought a 1982 c20 from an old guy (age 80s) and he told me about how dangerous they were even back then, a personal friend of his lost a leg to one.

Those rims are not as bad as people think. Worked at industrial tires for 25 years the split rims are ones I will never touch. Lock rings need to be inspected cleaned in the groove of the rim. Add a few pounds of air and tap the ring with a mallet to seat. Put it in a cage or chain around or some way to restrain it and use a long hose on a remote inflator. I used to bolt the rear duals on to finish inflating because the lock rings face each other and the rims can't move. Nice video. You needed to use a lube of some sort like even paint thinner or varsol if you are not going to use the tire again use penetrating oil.

When I had my farm I had a 1962 Chevrolet C60 dump truck. I think it still had the original tires on it in the mid 90s, I had to get new tires . I had the same problem of getting the tires off the rim I ended up putting a very small amount of Diesel fuel on them ,mi let them soak for a couple days . It still a job and a half but I changed them.

Take it from an old tire guy... Some soapy water in an old coolant jug with a hole in the cap would help that problem of getting the tires off. Soak the bead around the rim and let it sit awhile and the soap will do most of the work. Most of the time just jumping on the tire will break the bead, but a tire hammer may be useful as well, especially on rusted rims like yours. A tire service might be your best bet as well, certainly is cheaper than a shop and they'll have the jacks you need to do the job right.

I use a bumper jack to break the bead on my tires, place the base of the jack as close to the edge of the rim as you can get it, jack up your truck, should push the tire right off.

Hi, just a word of help for you, if you had a tyre wide board or maybe a steel ramp, place that to the edge of the tyre and rim THEN drive up it putting much more weight (down force) to the tyres edge on the rim, always use "washing up liquid" DISH SOAP In American, maybe diluted 50/50 with water to ease the tyre off the rim, use a pry bar if it stubborn. - Hope it works well for you.. Thanks for the video -- Ian - UK.
