Here in Australia up until the late 70s , one way disc plows were commonly used. Chamberlain Tractor company in Whelshpool West Oz made a 30 disc model. They could sure cover some gound and if set properly they let a beaut smooth finish. John Shearer also made excellent ploughs with hydraulic stump jump action that could be set lighter for rocky ground in cab. The one way disc plows can be opened up wider or closed up for different ground types. The 30 disc model could be opened up to around 23 feet and still do a good job at burying trash and burying weeds. Then all of a sudden ploughing became a dirty word. Scarifiers were ok, but the plough really copped a bad name. They were the cause of hardpans and erosion issues overnight. I still use a 24 disc Chamberlain plow every now and then, depending on trash levels and it is a very very cheap way of ripping or turning the dirt over and burying trash. I pull it with a 2290 Case and even when its sunk in to it maximum depth taking around a 17-18 ft cut the old 2290 has no problem at all pulling it. We have never replaced a disc on it and its covered thousands of acres over the years. We can wear out a set of points on a scarifier in a day. We can also ear a set of no till points out pretty quickly in our soils. We seem to get better yeilds with conventional four inch points because it scatters the seed and fertilizer around a bit more and doesnt burn the seed. We dont have near the amount of top soil as you lot over there in the states but i have seen a few farms using big mulbourd ploughs to bring up a bit of clay in sandy non wetting soils. Great vid as always👍👍

There's a lot to be said for GPS, many tractor drivers today wouldn't have a clue how to use a conventional plow ,you would have to work out your stetches so they both marry up,it's not like a reversible plow where you start at one headland and finish at the other. If I was to be really picky ,the plow would have given a much cleaner finish if it was fitted with skimmers ,the plow in the video wasn't set right as you could still see corn stalks and rubbish that wasn't buried , plowing is slow and expensive operation if you don't care about the finish you may as well use a heavy cultivator ,great video I prefer a track laying tractor for plowing much better distribution of weight and more pulling power. Kind regards, Kevin Fox,England Essex

If the plowshares *aren't* nice and shiny, they won't "scour" and will just shove dirt to the side instead of turning it over, as well as taking much more fuel because it's harder to pull. If they're not shiny, you need to go plow some virgin sod for a few hundred yards.
