The fact that the teacher died on her birthday, and the only reason she died was because she decided to bake a cake and bring pizza for her class- before celebrating at home! What a price to pay for being a caring teacher (a profession celebrated across the world, and vilified only in America). Shame! HOLD CRIMINALLY DEADBEAT PARENTS ACCOUNTABLE.

As a retired school administrator with 20+ years of experience in special education, I will add to the comments about the family, that law enforcement and school districts do a horrible job of investigating, communicating and following through with identifying dangerous high risk juveniles. In this case the investigators told the father to keep the boy out of school, but summer break started, he moved and started a new school. Did the investigators tell the first school- probably not. The boy spent most of his first day out of class with severe anxiety, then did his rampage on his second day. There are almost always warning signs and it is always easier to ignore them until it is too late. Many school people are too scared of getting sued to take behavior seriously. There are a percentage of mentally ill kids who are way to dangerous to be in a mainstream school- there is a bias against out placing them in a safer and more supervised environment. These things will keep happening until that changes.

Your perspective matters and it’s sad we have no answers in our broken society! Many bad parents are going to prison in future for this disfunction! I agree the teachers and others are afraid to intervene! They will be the targets! Scary 😨 world indeed! In CA we all were scared to death of all teenagers! And that was in 90’s! It’s way worse now!

So true. It was my 7th grade year when our district decided to try to start merging problem students back into regular school. We had a behavioral school for problem students. It may have isolated them from their peers at our school but it provided everyone a much safer enviornment. They had their normal classes, much smaller, along with therapy and such. Then they started that "no student left behind" and classified the BD students in the same category as the special Ed students and pushed them through a rapid reintroduction so they could all go to the same high school with their original grade level. Every student was failed. The SE students had already been held back at least one year and basically skipped an entire years worth of lessons so in high school, they were already way behind so they were failing the HS level SE classes within a few months. The BD students were just treated as SE students even though most weren't so they were constantly causing problems since they were bored. It was a dangerous mess and most students dropped out or was expelled by Sophmore year. That was the dumbest thing I've ever witnessed. Even as a 12/13 year old, I could see how bad of an idea it was.

They don't believe in therapy, or they think therapy isn't working, and the kids will take out their emotions on the target down at the gun range. It's supposedly harmless because what we see the kid shooting is just a paper target. What the kid sees is other kids, teachers, bullies, and everyone that's made their life miserable. His mother was a drug addict who was not that present in his life. She had a criminal history of drug use, violence, and theft. His father reportedly had domestic violence against the mother. So this kid was raised through violence and abuse. Then he was bullied at school to the point of anxiety attacks that he went to the school counselor for. His father GIFTED him the rifle. Something seems off about the father quote "buying the gun" for his child. I doubt he simply bought the gun and didn't have regulations in place , when the child could be in possession of it. I think , in the end the fathers actions will seem a lot less intentional, the more things come out. It's not really insane for a father and son, to shoot guns at a shooting range or makeshift targets out in the woods.
