I'm gonna guess it's what he said about building up kinetic energy. Projectiles should hit the hardest at or near point blank then peter out in velocity the farther they travel. Don't know what he's on about "it has to be a minimum of x yards." Also, I haven't heard anyone used yards in years. edit: I was right, yes!

I think what he means is the accuracy of the arrow. As the arrow travels around the bow when it is fired it flexes and kind of snakes through the air. The arrow curves back and forth in an oscillating motion and as it gets farther away from the point it was released it stabilizes due to the fletching and averages out the oscillation to a certain extent. When at 10 yards there isn't enough distance for the oscillation to reduce enough for the arrow to be accurate. It probably caught the deer on the extreme of an oscillation and deflected across the surface of the deers skin instead of penetrating it and downing the deer.

@@josephtillery4183 I'm an archer, and though you're correct with the arrow flexing in the air, it doesn't really throw off the accuracy much. At 10 yards, you shouldn't have any problem hitting a precise target. What concerns me is that the guy couldn't get a clean shot at 10 yards. Dude needs to go back to the range!!

Dr. Hanson, you say once the bullet leaves the barrel there is no more acceleration. I understand you mean there is nothing to accelerate it in the direction it is headed (propulsion). But the correct answer is that the air friction causes a deceleration in the bullet (which is negative acceleration) which is why eventually the bullet will stop given it does not hit something or fall to the ground due to another acceleration acting on the projectile-earths gravity.

I guess the only way that would make sense is if they were shooting downhill and relying on gravity to accelerate the arrow.

Hell even then, the arrow is probably above its terminal velocity and would still slow down, albeit maybe a bit more slowly.

Hey Dr. Hanson! I got a quick question; If you were to shoot a bow at a target that was somewhat far, you'd aim slightly upwards so the arrow travels in an arch. In this case, would it be possible that the arrow actually hits the target at a greater velocity/with more energy than the initial velocity? I think that's what he was referring to, the arrow falling down in an arch and building up velocity that way.

Without considering wind, the horizontal speed will be the same for all the trajectory because the acceleration (gravity) only acts vertically. Now the vertical speed would be the same going down than the speed going up (for the same height), that statement would only be true if the target was lower than you, say you shoot from a building. but it's not because of the parabola, you could shoot straight down and have the exact same result.

Here is the scenario: We have a few layers of Styrofoam in front of a bow. We first shoot the bow from 1 millimeter distance between its arrow and the Styrofoam. Then we shoot it again this time from half a meter distance. Why do I get the feeling that the second time the arrow will penetrate more than the first time?!

The arrow is accelerating the whole time it is in contact with the string. The instant the arrow leaves the string the only force acting on the arrow in the horizontal direction is friction, which we commonly call wind resistance.

Moreover, in the presence of gravity, you have and x and y component. Due to gravity, the tangential force will not be in the x component completely. So when the velocity is the same in the x component (ignoring air resistance), the tangential velocity is pointed more below the x-plane and therefore since it is not orthogonal to the Styrofoam anymore, it will not penetrate as much. (this means the normal force acting on the arrow will be lesser than when the arrow is closer) Without gravity, no matter what the distance is, they will penetrate the same :). Correct me if im wrong ont his part: but the tangential force is also at an angle downwards due to gravity

The only compound bow I shot wobbled like crazy off the string. It took about 30ish yards for it to stabilize. Perhaps hitting a target with an off kilter arrow would result in less penetration? Although the force imparted on the target would still be about the same I'd think.
