Hey, hey there Capt. !! I love seeing the rocks and the lighthouses too. Thanks to John Andrews for the video!! I did not realize how many ships were at anchor waiting. OMG!! The two seagulls are paitently waiting for the party. Very cool to watch her make the turn into the canal. I can definitely tell she is fully loaded. BE CAREFUL so you don't get ssoaked!!! WOW is certainly the word for that horn.📣📣 Very nice!! It is unbeilevable that The Miner is the record holder. It is awesome. Thank you for letting us experience that horn. Hope you have a good evening. Take care and chat soon. 🙋🚢

The horns of the Mesabi Miner, sounding from the bows mast to the horns sounding from Mesabi Miner's super structure were like that of two tango dancers. Horns that danced in a well rehearsed and mesmerizing tango for all to hear. Unique indeed! 💃🕺 📯📯

@vibewithmike 4 ай бұрын
@Kushmeiser003 you picked a great week to go to Duluth. There’s a lot below, but it’s important if it’s your first time in Duluth. I definitely recommend these activities in Duluth. First, you must visit Anchor Bar in Superior, Wisconsin, just a short drive from Duluth. They have the best burgers, even featured on the TV show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” It’s cash only, so keep that in mind. This place is a must for ship lovers. If the weather cooperates, the best restaurant balcony is at Mexico Lindo in the Fitger’s complex. You can park in the ramp and make sure to get your parking ticket validated before leaving the restaurant. The view alone is worth the stop, and you will really enjoy it. You look out on Lake Superior and the Lift Bridge! One block from Lift Bridge, there’s a place called Father Time Antiques. It’s a really fun place to walk through, and I bet you’ll find some cool things to buy. Tons of interesting items to look at and purchase. Also, about 200 steps away from the antique shop is the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which is another must-visit. Finally, make sure you visit the Maritime Museum right next to the bridge. It’s free and a great spot for anyone who loves ships. Ship schedules: Here are the two tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use all three of these together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those tools. #1 This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0 #2 This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.

Appreciate your videos . Used to camp very frequently at Algonac State Park . I would sit and watch the freighters with my Know Your Ship book. Saw the Fitzgerald many times . In fact if we were camped there over a week . Would see the Fitz come down heavy and a few days later see her come back up riding high . In 76 all of the US Steel vessels ( Great Lakes Fleet) were painted in a bicentennial theme. Fun times and wonderful memories . Thanks for the videos .

@vibewithmike 26 күн бұрын
I freighter find the exact model, Great Lakes freighters, known as “lakers,” are typically equipped with powerful air-powered horns, often from manufacturers like Kahlenberg Industries and Cunningham Air Whistles, which are renowned for their durability and compliance with maritime regulations. These horns produce deep, resonant tones within the 70-200 Hz frequency range and exceed 120 decibels, ensuring audibility over vast distances. Multi-tone capabilities are common, allowing ships to signal distinct maneuvers or warnings, such as altering course or navigating in low visibility. Governed by international maritime regulations, these signals play a vital role in ensuring safe navigation across the busy and weather-variable shipping lanes of the Great Lakes. The sound of a laker’s horn is an iconic element of the region’s maritime culture, serving both functional and symbolic purposes. I hope you subscribe and come back, take a look at this, look at the snow coming down with the shipped the other day. It’s 1000 foot ship plus, he will meet the Boat friends snowman. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXXVq2Z6ZbmkmK8si=jW6UEmy1IZX7Hsb8

Newbe question; if the ships uses diesel engines, why is there steam from the stacks?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
I am so glad that you asked about the steam. Many of these vessels have a scrubber system. It removes the harmful exhaust from the diesel engines and converts it into steam. Check out more information here. Knowing how guys compete over the simplest of things, I could imagine there being a competition between ship captains to see which ship has the loudest horns… My apologies to any lady captains out there…I do know the ladies can be very competitive too, so no disrespect intended. I just found your channel Mike. I just watched your most recent video (Tregurtha Exits Duluth). If I may ask, how loud is the responding horn from the structure the ships pass under? Thanks again for sharing these videos and some history of the ships and the canal.

Does DB level depends on distance from your cam? Thxs
@chuckg6039
@chuckg6039 Жыл бұрын
Of course it does. All the top 5 were recorded at very similar distances so thus very comparable. In fact most were done at reasonably the same distance. In the chart I maintain I throw out readings obviously taken too far out. Many times Mike will not even mention ones done too far away. While not performed using research grade techniques, it does provide fun meaningful comparisons. The top scoring ships definitely belt out their songs! Their horns are consistently very loud time and time again.
