Today we test out the MT Round Ball from Goodell Shotshell Co. Normally lead round balls are a challenge to keep accurate because they tend to deform badly during acceleration. I had to try mitigate deformation using household materials.

just so you know - I don't know about everyone else but for me I like the lead plate because it gives a (somewhat) consistent reading on how much penetration the rounds have and how much power they have. most things go right through ballistics gel, so you can't really compare. but the lead plate gives some cool results

Well this design & it’s accuracy probably shouldn’t be a surprise. Remington’s original round slug from back in the 1960s was called a punkin ball at least among hunters and they flew good. I can’t remember if it had any raised groves but don’t think so, I think they were just a round 1oz ball of lead but they did sit in a plastic shot cup that exactly matched the diameter of the lead ball. We had reloading equipment for skeet shooting and used to play around with all kinds of projectiles and powder charges.

@@taofledermaus Jeff if you use a cut down metal shell that's been cleaned of all gunpowder and has no primer, you could put the cut down metal shell onto a heat source to dry the toilet paper wad faster. Just make sure it's been cleaned of all gunpowder and it's primer less for safety.

Even if you aren’t a gun guy, this is just incredible things to learn from. Thanks Jeff, OG, Danny and the rest of the many talented crew for the best content on the internet. The time-tested rule of thumb remains true: EVERYTHING is better with rifling! Also, this is the most ingenious use for toilet paper in field-expedient engineering that I have ever seen. Very impressive, and a resulting product that is high enough in quality that you could sell it as a handloading retrofit component for this round; turns something that's a quirky novelty into a genuinely impressive slug; one could deer hunt with one of your handloads.

For reference with the golf ball, a shotgun slug leaving the barrel at 1550fps is equivalent to 1057mph which is 6 times harder. It’s actually impressive how strong fiber and paper is when condensed really suddenly, you’d think it would cut it with that kind of transfer of energy

I have seen a design like this in an old British shooting book. The “ribs” around the ball are there to permit the ball to squeeze down and pass through a heavily choked shotgun barrel without creating excess pressure as it passes through the choke.

Tip of the day : if you stir a little wood glue into your toilet paper pulp, your homemade wads will end up considerably stronger. If you use a 50/50 mix of water and wood glue to make the pulp, and add in a little bit of finely shredded fabric to the mix, they end up orders of magnitude stronger than just tp+water.

Hi! If it wasn't for your Fred Kimble, we'd still be shooting round bullets into the barrel caliber. There is a legend that mankind suffered with round bullets until 1957, and only when the first artificial satellite flew into the vastness of the universe, the unknown hero came up with the idea to make a caliber bullet with a sub-caliber and leading belts, and the bullet "Sputnik" appeared. Sputnic, it's a Russian variation )))
