This song is kind of Burr’s “My Shot”. It shows the clear difference between Burr and Ham. Ham doesn’t wait for the right opportunity he charges ahead and uses everything he’s got because he’s got nothing to lose while Burr has to play it smart and wait for the moment to strike. Burr’s jealousy is starting up now seeing Hamilton happily married, with a slew of friends and propped up as GW’s right hand man. Burr believes he’s doing everything by the book and correct and so Ham’s success through adversity and ambition is infuriating to him.

LuminaryPrism75 I think Burr’s big “want” song is he wanted to be in the room when it happened.

Burr's notion of "playing it safe" and Hamilton's tendency of "charging in headfirst" end up profoundly inverted by the end of the show, and the road there is fascinating. Burr's desire to play it safe is made clear in the lines "when [my parents] died they left no instructions, just a legacy to protect." Despite being an orphan like Hamilton, Burr was born with every privilege and advantage, unlike Hamilton. Both Burr and Hamilton know about loss, but Burr still has enough to protect that he can't risk being foolish and losing what he has left. However, when your core philosophy is simply to "retain what you have," you never really grow or progress: you just desperately try to maintain a status quo. But Hamilton is constantly attacking the status quo as he "changes the game, plays and he raises the stakes." And from this, Burr realizes can't actually afford to keep waiting for it. He doesn't wait for Theodosia: he goes off and has a daughter with her. He doesn't wait to get a seat in the room where it happens: he goes off to become a Senator of New York. He follows Hamilton's lead and attains great things... but at his core, he's still empty. Why did Burr want a seat in the room where it happens? What does he hope to achieve with such great power? He never tells us. Even when he runs for President, he's cagey and secretive. When asked what he believes, "he obfuscates; he dances." Burr knew that he wanted what Hamilton had, but never took the time to think about _why,_ and that left him as a man who only sought power for the sake of power, and that became the reason Hamilton endorsed Jefferson instead of Burr: as dangerous as Burr thought Hamilton was, in truth there's nothing more dangerous than a man who will do anything for more power, but has no beliefs to guide that power.

(This isn't a spoiler since we aren't told much about Burr's story) The "Theodosia" in this song refers to Theodosia Bartow Prevost (later Burr). Theodosia was raised by a single mother for 5 years and at age seventeen married her first husband. Her husband served in the British military but Theodosia was an American patriot. She offered her house as a resting and meeting place for revolutionaries such as the Marquis de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton and most famously Aaron Burr. George Washington also actually regarded Theodosia as one of his friends. She was a smart woman. Her mother's second husband had made sure that she was very educated. In their letters, Burr would often speak to her like he was talking to an political ally, they would speak about politics, feminism and philosophy. She and Burr met on a five day sail to New York. They started a great friendship and Burr would visit to her house. A secret romance sparked between them, but by 1780 they were openly lovers. After Theodosia learned of her husband's death in 1781 (her husband had left to the West Indes in the 1770's) she and Burr married a year later.

Sadly she died relatively young, married to Burr for only 12 years. And their daughter, also named Theodosia, died when she was 29-- either lost at sea, or killed by pirates.

Burr inherited a "legacy to protect" from his parents. He feels like he has to do things the correct way, he's doing the things you're "supposed" to do to get ahead, being patient, waiting for his moment, etc, and Hamilton just rushes forward with no established reputation to protect (He has something to prove/ He has nothing to lose) and just goes from success to success. So, yeah there's some jealousy there. "What is it like in his shoes?"

One thing this song does is illustrate the differences between the life strategies of Burr and Hamilton. Hamilton is aggressive and open, declaring what he wants and actively trying to achieve it. Burr sees the future as uncertain, and tries to position himself so that he is ready for whatever comes. He refuses to express strong opinions, so as to not make any enemies. "I am not standing still. I am lying in wait". For example, he thought he would become Washington's "right hand man" by being in the right place, with the right credentials. But he sees Hamilton, this nobody, rising faster, getting the good jobs, finding love, etc. His low-risk approach to life is not paying off the way he wants.
@claritale_5 жыл бұрын
He is waiting for the reason he is alive to show up in front of him, he is searching for an answer to that question and is trying to stay still while waiting. Sadly, him just waiting is what makes his life so difficult and even when he attempt to do something, Hamilton is there to make him fail (for exemple, Burr wanting to be Washington's right hand man, but Hamilton wins it. There is more exemples, but that would be a spoiler ^^).
@aaronsupnet51535 жыл бұрын
What he is waiting for is an answer. That for everything he's been through has to be for a reason and instead of being foolish and chasing that reason (whatever it maybe) he patiently waits for the answer( or reward) to him. He takes a cautious approach, unlike his friend/rival Alexander who stands ands waits for no one.
@TheCanderemy5 жыл бұрын
What he means by "Wait for it": Hamilton actively goes for what he wants. He actively sought out and fought for love, work, his friends, and his achievements. He had this drive that helped him get to where he is now and where he is going. Hamilton risks his future and legacy by chasing after all these opportunities that might not even be meant for him. Burr, on the other hand, believes that he should let all these opportunities come to him instead of the other way around. He believes that what he is meant to be, his legacy, will come to him at its own pace and that actively seeking it out might change it for the worse. He cant take that risk because he has so much to lose. "Wait for it" is Aaron Burr's "My Shot"
@roems63965 жыл бұрын
HoityToityBadger This is it. Hamilton has nothing to lose so he can be reckless, but Burr feels he has to protect his family’s legacy and can’t make any decisions rashly? He has to wait for the right opportunity and not make any mistakes.

Aaron burr was actually a very careful man. he preferred to actually to sit back and figure out his next move especially during his vice presidency. The issue was because of his careful nature he didn't fully understand the tiny things that made politics during that time. Burr wasn't exactly the best man for politics but he was a very good businessman often seeking Alexander's assistance on financial matters. The Duel between them started as a very large disagreement in a newspaper and it escalated quick into a honor duel. Hamilton planned not to hit Burr ever as he fired into a tree while burr still mad fired direct into hamilton. and you know how that ended.

I've lived by this song since I first heard it. Running head first to every potential opportunity to _maybe_ succeed is foolish. For basically my entire life, I've had damn near zero control over my life, so the line "I am the one thing in life I can control. I am inimitable, I am an original." resonated with me so much that I used it for my senior yearbook quote. The one thing in this song that I (thankfully) cannot relate to is living with a daily pressure of guarding your family's legacy. I would much rather have something to prove and nothing to lose over having something to maintain and protect for my entire life.

And my other favorite song! Burr's songs are always the best, so much emotion. Okay so, our main caracter is Hamilton, right? So arguably he's our hero and Burr our antagonist, but Hamilton is Burr's antogonist, his dragon to slay. Burr lies in wait bcs even when he takes action. Hamilton is already there one step ahead, makin him fail.

That Burr shot Hamilton in a duel is the only thing I remember ever learning about either of them in American history class. I was 15 thinking, "geez, duels were such a bad idea." So it's funny to me when people seem surprised at how the play ends... especially when Burr identifies himself as the guy who shot him up front!

Ironic that in the end, he wasn't willing to wait for it, the IT being: Hamilton throwing away his shot. And Hamilton who always says he's not "throwing away his shot," in the end, he did and it killed him. Brilliant how they set these two motifs for each character and then their opposite becomes each character's fatal flaw.

burr was always jealous of hamilton, that jealousy grew to hatred especially after hamilton endorsed thomas jefferson (his enemy whom he never agreed with) in the presidential election of 1800, so burr challenged hamilton to a duel (weird cause burr was saying duels are immature) and burr killed hamilton, accidentally, burr is a terrible shot, he meant to just wound him
@joshuawatts19243 жыл бұрын
Actually the duel wasn’t after the Vice President election it was after Hamilton torpedoed his governor run after already ruining his chances of being president 4 years earlier. The play had to condense it for story purposes but it makes more sense that he would lose his cool
